Windows Vista Install

Can I install Windows Vista on a USB external harddrive?

I dont want it on my main harddrive as of yet, I wanna be able to play around and check it out first.

It should work off an external HDD right?

I'm not sure whether Vista can be installed to a USB drive or not,I don't think so.Would probably run slow anyway.
It can be installed on eSATA.

Or you could install Vista in Microsoft Virtual PC 2007and it's free.

I don't think it will work. I installed windows XP on my portable 30GB harddisk and tried booting from there. But nothing appears.

That sucks as I dont have another sata drive or any other hdd available and I've heard too many people complaining of Vista, so I'm not prepared to install it unless I've tested it first.

Edit: What is M$ virtual drive?
