In release notes published Tuesday, Microsoft said that users need to run the IE10 Platform Preview on Windows 7 RTW -- the designation for the original 2009 release of the OS -- or Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1). The latter started reaching users on Feb. 22.

Windows 7 RTW must be updated before it's able to run IE10, said Microsoft

When Vista users try to install the IE10 preview, they see a dialog box that reads, "Windows Internet Explorer Platform Preview does not support any operating system earlier than Windows 7," after which the installation process terminates.

The decision makes Microsoft the first browser developer to drop support for Vista, and follows the move last year when it announced Windows XP would not run IE9, the browser that went final four weeks ago.

Not a bad business move. Microsoft does not make money on IE they make money on Windows. Vista users will not upgrade to 7 just for browser support, they will either switch to another browser or continue using IE9. By dropping support for Vista they are undoubtedly saving money by moving developers into other more profitable departments.

Not a big deal. Vista users (though I don't understand why there would be too many) can just use IE9, Firefox, Chrome, etc...

I think this is very weird actually. AFAIK there's no big difference between Vista and 7 that supports this decision, and Vista for home users have support for another year, and corporate support is another 6 years. It would be a cost in technical support though, but I'm pretty sure it would not make a difference to what it is now..

lets face it ie's never gonna be the best when it comes to web browsers, its not going to persuade anyone to upgrade as they only people who would upgrade know enough to know they can just move over to chrome or firefox, and those who don't know about other browsers won't be interested in upgrading windows versions

I haven't used IE for my everyday browsing since like 2002 or something. :D

If you consider that Opera, Safari, Firefox and Chrome all work fine on even XP, what does it matter that IE isn't supported? Hell, Opera 10 still supported Windows 98.

Windows 7 is by far Microsoft's best OS. IE9 is by far Microsoft's best browser. So at least that is a good thing.

I don't think this is a move to persuade people to upgrade. If that was their intent, then Microsoft is one of the dumbest companies ever. If the lack of IE9 didn't get people to upgrade from XP, why would the lack of IE10 get people to upgrade from Vista? I think it is pretty safe to say that the people who haven't upgraded from Vista probably won't until they get a new PC.

I know what RTM is, but what's RTW?

Do you sometimes feel invisible?

Quoted from, here at msdn blogs>canthe's WebLog archived from 2005. Old posting, but it still applies.

"Since I've become a Release Manager at Microsoft, I've learned a lot about what it actually takes to "ship" software. From the development team's point of view, the big celebration is when our software is "released" (often abbrievated as RTM or RTW). RTM = Release to Manufacturing, or the process of making CDs, putting them in a box, and then getting them out to customers. RTW = Release to Web, which is making something available for download."

You have to adapt the usage to the hardware. I'm on a laptop with a Pentium M 1.6 Ghz, 512MB RAM and FF4 atm and it's all smooth UNLESS YOU OVERWORK IT.
