Exactly what the title says, what is the difference between Windows XP Full OEM and Windows XP Full HOme Edition? And why the price difference?

OEM version is available with the purchase of a computer or Mobo,Ram,HDD,CPU combo for a reduced price.

OEM means Original Equipment Manufacturer. When you buy OEM stuff, you're getting it directly from Microsoft. When you buy it 3rd party (like walmart), it isnt directly from the manufacturer.

Er, not exactly. Examples of OEM are Dell, HP, Gateway, etc. This would be third-party.

System builders buy OEM, tweak the OS by adding software (bloatware) to install and other information under My Computer. Normally there's a logo and support information.

Retail copies include Microsoft support, and retail licenses can be transferred to another computer. OEM licenses must be used only with the hardware it came installed with.

OEM is supposed to be installed only on one computer 'for ever' ie if your pc (heaven forbid) fails and you decide to purchase a new pc you cannot call Microsoft and tell them to activate it on your new pc. Though you can always tell them that you are installing on the same pc but changed the motherboard... :pimp:

You will pay OEM version cheaper of the full retail box.. but "normally" you need buy a hardware with it.. it' s a little thing trouble: cause Microsoft was only do OEM at start for be installed when you buy new computer, and normally if you change your PC, you will need sell / give the Oem with it and buy a new...BUt in practice you buy a HDD, etc.. and the shop vendor have the right to sell you an oem version, then after a certain numbers of activation ( 50-100) you will need phone to Microsoft for have the activation enabled (free of phone charge)... never got problem with them for reactivate windows.. they will just ask you why you have need reinstall windows, say you have make a format.. and it's cool..

You can buy OEM copies of Windows from any retailer without needing hardware to come with it. In this case, you're the system builder, even if you're building it for yourself. When you buy a prebuilt system from a system integrator, like Dell, HP, Gateway, etc., the Windows that comes preinstalled is bound to that hardware.

If you sell your OEM copy of Windows to someone, you're supposed to include a primary piece of original hardware.

50-100 times is not realistic. With a retail copy, you can reactivate over the Internet several times before you have to call Microsoft to get a new activation number. With OEM copies, you can usually schmooze them into letting you reactivate, even on different hardware, but according to the EULA, you're not supposed to.
