Win10x64.
I've figured it out just now. All of my windows images, including older official Win10 and Win7 ISOs, and the converted ESD files from Media Creator run Bootmgr instead of Wimboot.
Rufus only works with wim, that's why I couldn't see the option in Rufus 2.xx and now 3.xx

yes actually. I personally use Aomei which has a win2go creator (free). Anyway. Download or mount the ISO to your fav 2012+ ISO and slect the wim (under sources) after you click the W2G option in the program. you now have a portable windows server OS. I use this when I have to recover servers that backup using windows server backup but everything on the OS is hosed because they used baremetal. I can access the backups from the bootable drive using the server backup console and restore to the host disks.

because its only available in pro versions and not everyone runs pro. Also some people used non-certified drives, something the MS tool does not allow.

The ISO's need converted to imgPTN files (image within a contained partition), which is an easy process with the included utility. This does require a little more effort, but works extremely well and has been something I've relied on in the field for years.

Yep. I've tried that one earlier today, and it worked fine with my Bootmgr-based images (exact same ones I tried to use w/ rufus). Got a 32GB WinToGo drive ready in about 1-1.5h

Have you tried the most recent update of Rufus 3.1? It had been a while since I updated, but it appears that we may have the option now.

It not only let me select it for a Server 2012R2 ISO, but is letting me create it on one of my spare USB flash drives as we speak, no error messages or greyed out restrictions yet.

UPDATE!

It works!!!! It also boots fine and acts as an installed OS! noiceeys...

I put it on a USB HDD so I can use that HDD as a master and clone it and have a fresh install with some extras (anti-virus,HOSTS files, Rainmeter for monitoring, etc)
