Hello. I'm trying to install Windows98 SE to an computer with agp port and ide disk, in other word to an old computer. I'm doing this because i want an retro machine.
Motherboard: MSI K7N420 Pro, Amd socket, Ati agp card, Award Bios

I have not been able to install Win98 SE because i have this error message just when dvd drive starts to read:
Verifying DMI Pool Data.......
Boot from ATAPI CD-ROM :

Invalid system disk.
Replace the disk, and then press any key

Nvidia Boot Agent, PXE-2.0 (build 082 V1.04)
Copyright (C) 2001 NVIDIA Corporation
Copyright (C) 1997-2000 Intel Corporation
PXE-E61: Media test failure, check cable
PXE-M0f: Exiting NVIDIA Boot Agent
DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER

I have checked the bios which name is Award and bios recognizes:
IDE Primary master: Maxtor 40gb
IDE Secondary master HL-DT-ST DVDRAM

I have also made boot device sequence as follows: First device is CDROM and second HDD-0 and third is disabled

I have tried to install with different hdd's and dvd drives.

Also, what i wonder is that this setup installs WinXP SP3 with same settings without any hickups. I'm not an expert with computers but this makes me wonder.
Computer also boot's Hirens boot cd 12.00. From there i have tried different programs to format, set active, installed/uninstalled Boot Manager, and repaired MBR.

I also downloaded and burned to a dvd MS-DOS 6.22 but setup wont boot with it.

Any help would be appreciated.

I had a similar problem before. I had to use nLite to create a new XP disk with the newer chipset/raid drivers (AMD in my case) to get it to install. Works great now.

Did you make sure the master / slave on the ribbon is correctly placed and that the Jumpers on the drive are in the correct position?

Your Windows 98 media is not bootable. Try to create an MS-DOS bootable USB/CD, and put the Windows installation files on it. Make sure your drives are in legacy IDE mode. If you want to use USB, look up HP USB Storage tool.

Windows 98 setup has command line switches. Try "Setup /?", You can force it to run with one of them.

Thank you Regeneration. First i downloaded Windows 98 Boot Disk from here: http://www.allbootdisks.com/download/98.html. I put the floppy in and booted with it and in some point i was able to give command "Setup.exe" and i installed Win98 SE.
