Woohooo hd3870 for 60 bucks

Well i was on Kijiji today and the first thing that popped up was a guy selling his HD3870. Thought nice card. then i looked at the price 60.00 bucks. He has a 3870x2 and this but needed money to party this weekend so he got rid of it for 60. Now i have to decide which card i have is better...8800gt or the asus hd3870. What do you guys think?

I am willing to be that the 8800GT is the faster card. 8800GT destroyed my 2900 in all games except Oblivion and Bioshock.

Well i tried the HD3870 and ya no where near as good as the 8800gt so i will sell it to my PC store lol

For a mere 60 bucks, I wouldn't complain about the 8800GT destroying it. I'd jump at the chance for one if it was that cheap.

I wouldn't say destroyed, 8800GTs are "faster" but only slightly, for the most part they're on par.

Also, a 3870 for $60 is great. I wish I could get my self a 3870 for that. I've just RMAd my 3870X2 for a refund, to wait for RV770. I'm stuck with an X1600XT for the time being and I really don't want to try and play anything at 1920x1200.

I need something to tide me over til RV770

. *looks around ebay for cheap 3870s*

Well i tried it on COD4 and had to drop the card settings to performance/quality to get it to run the way i wanted it and got 25 to 45 fps. And i just sold the card for 150.00 to a friend that already had one

Wow that is low fps. I have a 3870 and my fps in cod4 are around 65 or so with everything maxed @ 1680x1050.

Depends on what you do. If you are going high on AA and AF get the 8800 GT. ATI cards don't track AA/AF like nvidia cards. 2AA/AF on nvidia will be 4AA/AF or 8AA/AF. But also the 8800 series hates heat and slows after playing 3 hours of gaming or so. The HD3870 can still run smooth over 3 hours.

The HD2k and HD3k series of cards handle AA differently, but 2x AA is still 2x AA. Some argue that picture quality is higher, though I must say Nvidia has improved their IQ considerably. I noticed an improvement (6600, X1800, X1950, 8600, HD3850. A little ATi biased, I know, but enough to notice the difference between several generations of cards), and must say that they haven't sacrificed much performance for IQ, but the AF was still a little off, and noticable in games like GTR2 and Race, between ATi and Nvidia. The ATi had clearer textures, and smoother lines, under the same settings.
The difference when AA is concerned though, is noticed in terms of performance. The HD series doesn't love AA, and gets a considerable performance hit in most situations. Not too noticable at lower AA with low res, but obviously increases with settings changes.

Without proper air flow, both cards would probably struggle with 3 hours of gaming.
With proper airflow, both cards would be fine, the current generation seems to handle higher temperatures (my 8600 was hitting the high 70s on stock cooling, with no problems, 3850 reached the mid 90s without trouble, and was rock solid still), in trade for lower noise output from the fans.
If you had problems with stability with the 8800GT, your card might have been faulty, or your air flow needed fixing, that's all.

Oh, and I would love to buy a 3870 for cheap, to replace my 3850. Feel like I need just a little more grunt, but I'd be too lazy to install new drivers, with a switch of platforms

Well my 8800gt has the accelero on it so its nice and cool all the time doe me and i have great air flow. Heres a pic. Also i didnt like the picture quality of the hd3870 in game. And my 8800 gets about 70-80fps in game

I saw a 10 FPS avg difference in Crysis, 30FPS in the Doom3 based games, and near 20FPS in F.E.A.R.

3dmark06 showed a 2K point difference.

I would say that it fairly well destroyed the 2900. While both achieved playable frame rates, the 8800 achieved higher.
