World Wide Web Turns 30

I don't know how I missed this but the World Wide Web turned 30 years old on March 11. The web has made a major impact on me. I don't know what I would do without it anymore. I've come to depend on it for so much. I read in one article where over half of the world is online. Anyway, Happy Belated Birthday World Wide Web.

Honestly, it isn't what it was when I first met it. Much more central ownership of assets, which I dislike. But I still appreciate it and indeed don't know what I would do without it.

You're right, the "internet" was "invented" in the early 80's when many universities around the world established and maintained an interconnected network between them. What the Fortune article is referring to is the GUI based commercial implementation of that type of network.

We had it on my school from 1982 I think. You had to learn Comal80 to make it work.

I found a punchcard in one of my desk drawers the other day ... it was one of 1,237 that comprised a program I had written in Fortran in 1972 or 73 to design concrete beams in buildings. As i recall, there were less lines of code to determine the beam size required than there were to round it up to the next half inch. Also remember playing a submarine game were after you typed in each move, the floor vibrated.

Happy birthday, without it I wouldn't have been able to play Runescape and get mods for TES VI: Oblivion. I skipped so much school back in the day, probably the best days of my life.

Though my first introduction was just looking at this:

and then the download gets stuck and fails and you have to re-download it 10 times... Remember the frustration? Good thing for "download accelerators" that saved unfinished data and let you continue downloading. 'Still, I'd give up my fiber optic to go back to a simpler time.
