Hi all

Is it worth upgrading the rig in my specs to a newer CPU? I plan on getting a new GPU soon and don't want it to be bottlenecked by anything else in my setup.

It's OC'ed to 4.4GHz and I'll probably be getting a GTX 1070 or AMD equavilent (when they're announced) in the next few months and upgrading my monitor to a 1440p one.

Thanks!!!

Just read this here:

Clock-for-clock it's only ~10% slower than Skylake so I'll be keeping onto it for a while yet :)
That's useful, I thought there wasn't much difference, but it's great to see it quantified like this.

Looks like my 2700K was a really good long term investment. Unfortunately, in this business that's not a good thing since it just means lack of competition to improve framerate performance much in games. This matters, because I can't hit those super-high framerates in modern games of 120Hz and 144Hz with any consistency, if at all. If you've ever seen the awesome smoothness of stutter-free 144Hz vsync-locked animation then you'll know why this is so important.

When it comes time to replace my monitor for a 4K one and a graphics card to go with it, I'll consider changing the CPU, mobo and RAM then. Hopefully Kaby Lake will offer a useful framerate improvement if AMD's Zen is good competition for Intel.

Looks like it's due for a Q4 release this year: www.bit-tech.net/news/hardware/2016/06/02/intel-kaby-lake-2016/1

MOAR ram, upgrade to 16Gb, and make the change to W10 it's meant to be better for gaming than W8.1.
Apart from that, slap in a new GPU and you're good to go.

I don't really need 16GB RAM to be honest and I've already got W10 :)

Just excited about this upcoming generation of cards and upgrading to 1440p freesync/G-sync :)

my OC'd i5 2500K (4.7GHz) comes off ~20% faster than a stock i5 6600K in every bench i throw at it.

OC your 3770K a bit more and you'll find very little can challenge it.

Simple answer: no. The CPU is easily fast enough to support any game / any GPU. Save the money for later.

the amazing part is that businesses around here keep literally throwing away 1155 stuff, yet the higher end CPU's (included in these 'old' systems) are still crazy powerful for gaming :/

LGA2011 started to go cheap as well, the 3930K is down to ~130-150€ here (3960X ~200-250€) and I guess that CPU is still good for a long time if overclocked.

i literally get them from the garbage dump. i've got family who go there and just pop open cases to find CPU's and ram.
my primary and secondary system, mobo and CPU both came from the literal garbage dump. Fortunately i did not have to get them myself.

even a plain i5 2500 (non-k) can OC to 3.9GHz on a P or Z series board, and i got 5 of them in one day when a business cleared out their old desktops.

i literally get them from the garbage dump. i've got family who go there and just pop open cases to find CPU's and ram.
Unfortunately we aren't allowed to go scrounging at the tip, safety issues they tell us.
But they do sell stuff from adjoined recycling centres that don't like you opening cases to look inside, so you have to buy it not knowing what it is.

LGA2011 started to go cheap as well, the 3930K is down to ~130-150€ here (3960X ~200-250€) and I guess that CPU is still good for a long time if overclocked.

But the boards are going up in price............

not worth jumping platforms, You're better off with your rig until 8 intel socket changes have gone by.

In a way, I miss needing to upgrade my CPU every 2 years. But then again, no I don't.
