Hi All.

Just wondering if i should sell my XFX 7800 GT 256mb and get myself a X1800XT 256mb? I got a couple guys interested in my 7800 so the difference i would have to pay is approx £40 to get the X1800XT. Would it be a worth while upgrade?

it actually depends where you're located. the x1800xt will simply school the 7800gt as th 7800gtx wasn't even a match for it, adn the x1800xt even beats the 7800gtx 512mb monster in some areas.

but the prices get lower for the x1800xt's in the u.s. newegg sells the sapphire x1800xt 256mb for 289$ and the 512MB for 340$

I don't really know how much £40 is. It seems to me though that it probably isn't half of what you paid. Unless you just have the money to throw away I don't really see the advantage of floping around between the top four 256MB cards. I would wait for something that offers a substantial increase in performance. I really doubt you would gain anymore than 1/8 of the performance you have right now. Probably somewhere between 1/8 and 1/16. You could just invest in some nice cooling and overclock the card and gain the same amount of performance for a mere fraction of the cost. So I don't really think it is a worth upgrade.

So, the 7800 GT 256mb, 7900 GT 256mb and the X1800XT 256mb are all on a par!

well....it all depends the x1800xt 256mb has an obvious stock performance advantage, but the 7900gt might have more headroom than the 256mb xt. the 512 xt can't be touched by the 7900gt and is only 40$ more in the u.s. I'd say the 512mb xt over the 7900gt easily, not too sure about the 256mb, as the 512 has more bios's better ocing cores and memory, and more performance boosts in higher res and higher detail environments (again the very reason we buy these cards).
here's a price comparison

No of course not. I just don't think spending $350 for the performance gain is economical. Then again I'm poor. If your rich and want to the spend the money than do it. You'll be happy you did it.

Here you go. Here are some graphs that will show you the differences. Its in German, but graphs are graphs, and we all use the same numeric system.

I won't be spending more than £40. I have a buyer for my 7800 GT ( I would only need to put £40 towards the new card after selling the 7800) so i am in the position of being able to buy an X1800XT 256mb card. Just want to know if i should buy it or get a 7900 GT 256 instead?

Well check out the graphs I added above. Personally I like ATI, and I think the X1800XT does better than its Nvidia counterpart in a single card system, but if you think would like to use two cards in the future get the 7900 because SLI is better than crossfire at the moment.

Not quite. The 7900GT is equivalent to a 7800GTX. The X1800XT is superior than the 7800GT, but prob. not worth the upgrade. I am not positive but would imagine that the 7900GT beats the x1800xt.

The 7900 GT has a great overclocking ability.

no the 7900gt doesn't beat an x1800xt the x1800xt gets a 9000 in 3d05 at stock, the 7800gtx gets around a 7600, the 7900gt gets around an 8400 at stock on all cards.
here's some benches.
http://www.legitreviews.com/article/322/1/

like was said before the x1800xt simply beats the 7900gt in all areas in single card mode, that switches when sli/corssfire are enabled.

if you plan to run dual the 7900gt is a good buy, if you plan to go single, well i still say the 512 XT is the best bet but the 256MB will still perform well.

if it were me, I'd choose the 7900gt over the x1800xt 256mb, as the 7900gt has more support, it can overclock further, and has better chances of being run in dual.

but I still emphasize the 512xt lol.

That's a good choice, the 7900GT is an overclocking monster even on air cooling. Be sure to replace stock cooler with something like zalman vf-700

I have a Zalman V700-CU so that would be an easy swap.

no not exactly.. he he

the 7900 gt and the x1800xt probably are or near enough not to argue..

the two GTs are crippled nivida cards thow the ati card is simply yesterdays king of the hill type ati card.. they are pretty good value now and probably wont be around much longer.. as i said earlier for 40 quid its worth going for..

a good x1800xt is near the top end and only half the price of current top end..

yeah esp being that you already ahve an sli board which makes it simple to upgrade in the future should the 7900 show any lag in a future game.
