Processor Q6600
Motherboard Asus P5Q
Memory OCZ PC6400 4GB

Storage 1TB F3

My current setup:

Asus P5Q
Q6600
HD 4870
OCZ Gold Edition 4GB (2x2GB) PC2-6400C5

I really wanna upgrade everything (purely because I am a snob) but the recession tells me that for now maybe just videocard and memory.

So in terms of memory I was thinking of maybe Corsair Dominator 4GB (2x2GB) DDR2 XMS2 PC2-8500C5. But would I notice a difference at all?

Or am I best of waiting for a bit and upgrading to I7, appropriate mobo, DDR3 memory etc

Thanks in advance!

You are not going to notice much of a real world difference. Save your cash and buy an i7 or a AM3.

Would you be interested in a small incremental upgrade perhaps?

4890 and a P5Q Deluxe?

Pm me for more details : ]

Thanks but I would be looking for a bigger performance upgrade than that! :toast:

Do you OC that Q6600? You may get a better OC results out of it with some better memory, but that is questionable...I'd hold out a bit longer tho, if I as you and wait for the imminent price war after the release of GF100...

Alreet well in that case + 1 to waiting for a while.

I find the q6600 to be plenty enough power for what I'm doing, but what do you use your system for?

I'm always E-shopping you see so maybe I can think of a cheap viable upgrade path : ]

No I don't do any overclocking at all! When is the GF100 due out?

Haha, I mainly just do some gaming! Nothing more taxing than that!

Maybe a 5850 then?
5830s come out at the end of this month too (think 4890 but power effciant, direct x11, better production process, an more overclocking head room) the 5830s should be around 140-150 in the UK when they first come out, expect the prices to ramp up very quickly after though ( like they did with other 5 series cards)

By the by you should really consider over clocking, the q6600 can run at 3ghz with very little voltage increase, a nice safe small over clock that will yield decent results! :D

Its really easy actually, what cooling do you have on the chip at the moment ? just stock?

I think even on stock you should be able to do this.

Go into your bios, change overclocking options to manual from auto, change the FSB to 333 save and exit the bios

Your now running at 3ghz and it took less then 20 seconds to do :p

You won't even need to touch voltage settings for a 3ghz overclock auto will handle it perfectly.

Its how I'm running mine right now actually : ]

Oh those coolers are epic for the price, I've used a few on a few different builds.

It shouldn't blow up but I can't guarantee it, I imagine if I did guarantee it something like a lighting bolt would hit or something else incredibly unlikely

If the overclock fails the computer will just restart and tell you the overclock failed anyway , its only HUGE overclocks were your risking anything really.

Want to know the most annoying thing?

There's an option in the bios for it to recognise USB keyboards, but for some reason certain boards have it set off as default

So I noticed! That really doesn't make sense! Surely most keyboards are usb nowadays!

You would of thought so, I've the ddr3 version of your board and it accepts USB keyboards by default, but the first one I had didn't ( Huzzah for RMAs!)

I've no idea why some boards have it set up and others don't.

0,5) Get more ram :)

4gb is plenty enough for someone who mainly games.

Ram is handy for people that like to watch 8 videos at once!

Yeah I hardly see the point of even having more than 3GB. I had random stuttering in Crysis with 2GB, added 2 512 sticks, bam no more stuttering. Therefore, 3GB is the magic number.

Aye : ]I'm using 4 at the moment but I did have 8 gb in this rig originally, it made zero difference to me, and I have ALOT of things open at once.
