One thing you could consider is getting an external enclosure for your old hard drive, then you don't have to transfer anything. Heck- you could even just toss the old drive in as a second disk.

One thing to do is also look @ ebay or the local Craigslist listings. I bought my cpu+motherboard NIB from a guy locally for about $150 less than it cost retail, and got a great deal on 2gb of ram also. Actually, I got my soundcard, another 2gb of ram (Corsair Dominator 8500 that I had to RMA a few months later) and my Coolermaster case via craisglist too!

Only thing I bought new was 3 HDD and a few fans - DVD burner from my old machine.

Spend the time to really research the important components - motherboard, CPU, and Ram. Once you have a good idea what you want to buy, see what killer deals are to be had.

Np. I've got theRosewill RX-358-S BLK (Black) 3.5" SATA to USB & eSATA Ext. Enclosure w/Int.80mm fan- Pretty happy with it, but it's normal price is a bit steep. If you go to newegg and select "Computer hardware" and then either "Computer cases" or "hard drives" you'll see a choice for "External Enclosures" and then you can select other search criteria to your heart's content...

I built my first almost 4 years ago, and build a new machine last january. The thing that's great about it is that when things get weird or screwy, you are so much better equipped to figure it out

...You also don't start out with all the pre-installed crap-ware, so you don't get the system lags, bugs, compatibility issues, and all the other problems that go along with the vendor's free software you never wanted in the first place!

yeah I would build your own, heck theres a guide right on this site. the only trouble you may have is finding a decent 8800gt, but theres other cards out ther. just make sure you pick your parts carefully and read everything! otherwise you may buy a incompatible part and get stuck. also ddr2 ram is real cheap right now so you can definately find better ram for less. good luck man :nutkick:

Edit: I've been reading reviews for the processor, and apparently the heatsink and fan aren't all that great.
Should I buy replacements for it?
And if so, what exactly should I buy?
I'd prefer it if these two things didn't cost a lot..

looks good in general, though I'd probably pass on the e6850 and get the q6600 ($234) or a e6750 ($189) instead, and get a decent cooler to go with it for some overclocking. The quadcore will OC very well, as will the 6750.

what's the USB external enclosure for? you have tons of room inside your case...also, that motherboard has onboard ethernet, so there's no need for modem unless i'm missing something

Another possibility is the e6550.

Only get the modem if you have dial-up.

I doubt you will need the dvi-vga adapters. The video card comes with 2.

I'll probably stick with the E6850..
I don't overclock, don't even know what that is or how to do it.
And I was just looking at that Arctic cooler.. Great price, great reviews.

The external HDD enclosure is for the hard drive in this PC.
I'd need to copy over a lot of files, and I wanted to make certain I'd be able to do so.
I don't know if my old hard drive would work in this new machine.

As for the modem, unfortunately I do have dial-up. Can't get anything faster here.
And I completely forgot that card already came with adapters..
I'll remove that from the list.

Edit: Actually, I don't think I'll buy that HDD enclosure after all.
It'd just be a waste of money, since I'd only use it once.
I'll buy a 1GB flash drive instead, which is something that wouldn't just sit around collecting dust after a single use.

Edit 2: I don't think I'll buy the flash drive either.
The one I already have would work just fine, it'd simply take a little longer since it is a 128mb.

Edit 3: Since heat seems to be an issue with some of these parts, should I buy this case instead?

Nice price. The same configuration from Alienware or Falcon NW would've costed $1350 min. Go for it. iBuyPower looks refreshing. Their stuff is really priced humanely unlike Dell offering a surplus GeForce4 MX 4000 upgrade for $60.

I was just looking at that case @ CompUsa the other day, it's VERY nice indeed for $39.

Of course, you can also just burn a few DVDs of your files that need transferring from one machine to the other.

Honestly, even if you have no interest in overclocking, I'd still choose either the q6600 for it's sheer quad power, or the e6750 since it's $90 cheaper and you'll be unlikely to notice the difference between 2.67ghz and 3.0ghz

- AND perhaps it'll help nudge you to try and OC the thing a bit. It's not hard at all these days, and you'll really learn a lot (while saving money)

if I were you and have 1000$, I would wait till the new wolfdale processors come out, in January I believe. Those will be the new 45n m chips, e8xxx.
