I feel like the value of the 2700X for $170 is incredible for a relatively small performance decrease. Does anyone know where @W1zzard gets the current pricing value for his comparative value/performance charts?

Thanks for everyone's responses and input in advance!

[Both would be using a B450 motherboard per the information on W1zz's review for value (Likely a ASUS Strix or MSI Gaming Carbon), but this is not set in stone yet]

if you have not bought the motherboard yet, then I would get the MSI X570 gaming plus - $170 - and a ryzen 3600 $199 (oc it) - and some cheap ryzen 3600 cas 17 ram. - you would get overall better performance than 2700x if all you do is mostly game, and even 10-15% faster in games.

As someone who doesn't have modern hardware, then yes, the extra performance is worth the few extra dollars. If I already owned something modern, then I may have a harder time justifying.

The good thing about having hardware that is two days older than dirt is, nearly anything is an upgrade :D

An extra hundred bucks or so in a build is not really a deal breaker, unless I was on a strict budget. At which point I probably would be looking at more midrange stuff to get the most out of it.

3700x for sure. Will also hold value better.

But honestly AMD is still the best at the bottom range (for gaming) so the b450+3600x with a plan 4600/4700x bump will be better than a static buy of 3700x

I could nab a 3600 for $150. Most results show it being close to the 2700X with an edge in gaming, but obviously a reduction in compute where more threads usage is applicable.

If you also throw a 5700XT into the mix, you can get it for $350 as well.

yep, I am considering a 3600 $199 buy, with a nice X570 board, and then just upgrade to 4700x next year. and sell the 3600 for like $80 or something. basically just a rental chip for $90 or so.

Whoa, hold on there. You may want to hit the breaks on that. AMD did promise AM4 support through 2020, but that's not the same as promising support for all processors released through 2020. Jan 1,2020 is still "through 2020"'; this could be the last generation on AM4. It's true that the next gen is just a 7nm + release, so maybe you'll get lucky, but that isn't guaranteed.

There is no reason to switch away from AM4.
The ONLY valid reason to change the socket is when radical new memory technology is out (Ie: QDR, HBM). Until that time, there can be 10 generations of CPUs using DDR3, DDR4, DDR5, DDR6 etc... on the same socket.

It's only Intel and their garbage practice of adding or removing a pin left and right that got us "used" to socket changes, while in reality all their boards starting with 1156 (bloody Nehalem!) -> 1155-> 1150-> 1151 (9900K!) could have been the same single compatible socket. But Intel = $$$$$$ first, f* the consumer.

they really messed up they could have addressed ryzen simply by releasing coffee lake on z270.

This may come across as apologetic for Intel but I would also agree with you to a point. The entirety of Z170,270,370,and 390 could have all been one board compatible generation.

However, how often do you need to update CPUs? I go about 5 years per CPU. By then, I want a new motherboard to have the latest features, for example going from Z77 to Z370 I gained 3xM.2 NVMe. I also sold my Z77 board for $130 because mint enthusiast boards with box and accessories do not lose very much value after they are no longer produced due to scarcity. I paid $150 for that board. I had another Z77 system, the ITX motherboard for it cost me $150 from Amazon and I sold the same board on eBay a few years later for $200. So its not a big deal to me to change motherboards because I do not upgrade CPUs very often and I keep my board, and its accessories: manual, disks, box, looking mint so I can resell it later on the next upgrade. My current machine was built in 2017, I plan to upgrade again in 2022.

To answer the poll, I'd rather the 2700X for $170 and plow the remaining $110 into a better videocard or a 1TB NVMe SSD. I think if I was going Ryzen 2 I would either go all in or get the 2000 series at a deep discount, so I would go for the 3900X or the 2700X. I'd skip the middle SKU piece.

Well, als usural: it depends :)
Purely for gaming, no, it doesn't matter. You can get any old intel quadcore or ryzen 1000/2000 for that, you will notice the differences only when your gpu is very cheap or very old.
It only gets interesting when it comes to things like AVX loads, like in software video encoding or other hard math stuff, that is where the 3000 series is much faster (twice as fast to be precise) than its predecessors.

Board compatible maybe, but you'd run into the same crap AM4 has now which is the same crap we had back in the FX Bulldozer days: you get CPUs unfit for the VRM on the boards, CPUs that can blow the whole thing up, and CPUs that suffer from severely limited OC potential due to board choice.

None of that is pretty, especially in public opinion/mindshare. And really as a manufacturer, why would you not use every opportunity to do a board update as it keeps them cost effective AND up to date. Updating bios for new CPUs is costly. Especially if you have a huge product stack; and then you can also add up those Spectre mitigations for good measure.

Seriously if you do these same socket upgrades all it tells me is you should have saved or waited a bit longer before jumping.

As an aside though the ASRock Z170 OC formula has some of the highest 8th and 9th gen Intel CPU overclocks. :peace:

3700x for sure. Will also hold value better.

No, it won't. 2700X at $170 is already at heavily discounted prices. 3700X at $280 (dunno why OP used that number, as it's really $320) will lose a lot of its value within a year, as the 2700X has. The 3700X wil probably lose up to $100 or more within a year, like the 2700X, but the latter will never lose that much of value. It will maybe lose further value, but its price reduction has saturated at this point. You see this when comparing a 1800X vs the 2700X, their alues are not that far apart from each other.

Micro Center gives you an Instant savings of $30 when purchasing a CPU and Motherboard combination in store. For a limited time they are giving $50 off on any 3000 series CPU and X570 motherboard. So the CPU ends up costing $280.

Once Intel counter-launches or if AMD releases the 4000 series, whichever is sooner, the prices will drop and the 3700X will probably resemble the current ~$200 2700X and ~$150 1700X. Until that happens it will probably remain priced high, as it is price and performance competitive against the Intel 9th gen Coffee Lake how it is priced currently.
In prior generations, the price drop occurred happened faster but in this generation, Intel has been stuck at the 14nm node and the AMD part is competitive. In previous generations, such as the least competitive generation, the 8150 launched at $245 MSRP and rapidly was ~$200 and later ~$160 afterward to compete against the 2500K. In this current environment though, it might be awhile.
