WoW Patch Removes Support for PowerPC-Based Macs

Man If I owned a duel Power-PC based Mac right now and was a fan of WoW I would be furious! Also WTF are they talking about the "death of Leopard a year ago." G-d I hate Mac gaming.

Although it is possible to assume some of its tremendous success is based on its vast hardware scalability, World of Warcraft will soon close the gap between lower and high-end hardware.

Late last week, Blizzard revealed on its official forum that an upcoming patch, set to release just before the launch of the Cataclysm expansion, will disable support for PowerPC-based Mac computers [via Blue's News].

According to the developer, support for the hardware has slowly been rolled back since the "death of Leopard a year ago." Overall hardware requirements for the insanely popular MMO has increased with the launch of each expansion. World of Warcraft: Cataclysm is expected to launch later this year.

In response to some pushback for the decision, the developer notes in the same forum post that StarCraft 2--and its upcoming Diablo 3--does not support PowerPC at all.

Users with PowerPC processor-based Macs who attempt to execute World of Warcraft after the mandatory patch is released will be treated to an error stating that "the hardware is no longer supported, and the game will not run."

Why should we care on a PC forum? Macs aren't PC's they're Macs. Just saying as I see nothing good coming out of this thread. :ohwell:

There are a lot of mac users on this site. Myself included. However in retrospect you are right. They second you smell smoke lock this bitch up. The thing is I'm an ex mac addict. I can troubleshoot them a LOT better then a PC. However I have seen the light and now I laugh at them. I'm kinda like an ex fat chick.

While I feel sorry for anyone that will be affected by this, it make sense from a business perspective to stop coding for a retired architecture. I was gonn say so what until I read that it was swapped for Intel only in 06, I thought it was earlier than that.

It's a damn shame and now I have to laugh at my leetsauce mac fanboi friend in WoW that bought his new Mac in early '06. He's about to not be able to play his favorite game.

It's actually nice to see this, despite my hatred for Mac's. It shows that they are moving forward with optimization, the Cata client uses Crossfire (finally) and more than 2 CPU cores. I just don't see how they could have kept Power PC around, and even right now, if anyone actually uses one to play, performance has to be awful.

Yup. Late 06 early 07. Whats sad is a decent PC from that era isn't affected. Mac have become appliances. Not computers. There was a time when Jobs first came back that they build AWESOME stuff. Graphite, Quicksilver and Mirror Door models were great systems. When they went G5 everything went down hill.
