Again, the problem they're having is not just YouTube, it's the system they're running. It's a socket 775 Xeon Quad core. It's held it's usefulness like a champ and proven a very long-lived platform, but it's at the end of it's useful lifespan for modern tasks. That fact sucks, but it's how tech works.
I know, my comment was aimed at that point, code isnt the same now as it was in that era.

Try to double check which codec is in use in firefox at 1080p, it may not be serving h264 at that resolution.

Twitch/hulu use h264 as far as I'm aware.

I have been using YouTube and Dailymotion forever, i always use an ablock and never is slow for me for both chrome or firefox. I stop using Youtube for channel use/upload videos, etc. I only use YT to watch a few videos now. I always use Dailymotion for my main channel use/uploading, watching videos, etc. Dailymotion is way better, but you need an adblock for both channels.

i need more information on this. I use brave but i also use tor and firefox and a few others. But my main one is firefox
gogle pays ff to be the search engine as default. imo, it goes much firther then that. google being convicted to be a monopoly. hopefully they are forced to sell chrome. google is a trash company

yep, started using linux. ms is also another problem. but chromium is garbage. especially brave. very shady. anti privacy.

YouTube doesn't require a lot in terms of CPU power. Any dual core will suffice for low bitrate AVC/H.264 streams, with a little help from the GPU. In fact, I was able to get smooth 360p with the slowest 1c/2t 32-bit desktop CPU.

It takes a bit more grunt for the contemporary VP9 1080p60, but a fast dual core can still do it when paired with a VP9 capable card.

And last I checked my FX@4.5 GHz could do VP9 4K60 without any assistance from the GPU.
YouTube may not require much, but browsers have a nasty habit of disabling hardware acceleration based on the detected drivers and such. "It's slow" is really meaningless without a report on CPU/GPU/RAM usage.

Supermium is meant for older systems might wanna try it
exactly, installed Win 1507 x86 to some C2D laptop, and YT worked OKAYish with Supermium!

Confirmed... Ehh I love Firefox though
yeah. I noticed some LAGS with FF open (not even YT sites) with a few tabs on my i7-11800H and 24 GB ram laptop. Yeah, I have reduced the i7 performance a little so it's not that hot but still the performance is pretty good. But I noticed random lags, and there was only FF open, I closed it and lags got away LMFAO so it's AGAIN time to move somewhere LMFAO. I have Opera for VPN (IDC how you call it a proxy, it does my job!), Vivaldi just for spare, Chrome for another trash, I think I'll put Supermium too even my laptop is not "old retro".

not sure that is such a big deal, FF needs money and google as too much. It's easy to change search engine. Besides most browsers have google as default and let you pick

I Run Firefox on my 775 build but wait... YouTube is the only site that uses so much cpu/ram. Not that I'm Mad but uhh this is just crazy. Hulu /twitch is totally playable without any lockup/pause. YT I have to wait for things to load and even while playing it tends to hang as my cursor hides through the player and not letting me pause
There is a problem with Firefox and youtube, im having some issues too with Chrome it works smooth.

VP9 is the meme of slow video starting, over here. ;)

Has a tendency of being difficult to load, then it plays fine.

Does it show "vp09" when you click "Stats for nerds"?

Use Greyjay.

Just looked this up, thanks for sharing, this is pretty neat. Typically I use Brave with ad blocker set to aggressive, or FF + ublock origin, but greyjay is much handier.

So do I... have used it for almost 20 years. but unfortunately it is going through some pretty trying times. Mozilla seems scattered and disorganized as well. I'll give it another shot once I hear some news. Currently moved to Opera.
Is Opera chromium based.

The Machinist boards are a bit "off-brand", but I've used them and they're solid offerings.
The problem with those is in details. Sometimes things just don't work because... exactly. Also if you really wanna go the X79/X99 Xeon way you must take into account that--SPOILER ALERT--these are old CPUs stored by Chinese in very questionable conditions and they tend to just die. My friend's lab had buried about six of them (of 50 ordered so it's beyond 10% fail rate we're talking about) and they were working without any overclocking whatsoever, also never reaching 60 °C. In a dry and clean room.

I'd much prefer waiting till a Ryzen 7400F+A620 system becomes affordable. Doesn't seem like OP is in any rush.

I've never had that experience. Every Machinist board I've bought works exactly as it's advertised too. They are especially great because one can use RegECC DIMMs with most of them, which are WAY cheap and yet great quality. I've only ever had one DOA board and the seller quickly replaced it. Otherwise they've been perfect. No they don't have all the bells & whistles, but they don't need them.

Except the links I provided were from sellers in the USA, where the OP lives. And for the record, Xeon don't "just die". Not sure where that came from but it's not representative of things in reality.

Yeah but on some weird occasions they don't work with certain parts. I know, vague, not fortified with proofs and I don't even remember what exactly didn't work on a Machinist/Huanan but worked like a charm on a "normal" motherboard but some cases happened. Other than lackluster warranty, I agree, there is no major disadvantage to these mainboards.

Does that automatically mean these aren't CPUs bought from Chinese? In case it does... I mean... I stand corrected.
And for the record, Xeon don't "just die". Not sure where that came from but it's not representative of things in reality.
V1s, V2s and V3s tend to. Not because how they were built or whatever but because how they were stored before they were sold to actual end users. Perhaps our realities just don't match. Now that I think of it your folks might be less reckless with the storing than the sellers on Taobao and AliExpress.
Price matters..
Of course it does but I thought 200 dollars ain't a big deal in the US... Especially for a puter that'll probably be used for another twenty or so years.

Right now in the US 200 is so Big Deal. Prices are high on pretty much everything. Every computer components is made in CN or close to that location. We Here in the US don't have the area to build big factories

Most Xeons that are sold in the states originate here. Remember, the US is one of the largest(if not thee largest) consumer of server/workstation systems. There's A LOT of surplus equipment here.
V1s, V2s and V3s tend to.
I have not seen any of this, and I've handled a ton of them.
Of course it does but I thought 200 dollars ain't a big deal in the US...
That depends on who you talk to and about. The post-pandemic economy is funky and all over the place but generally in depression. Some folks are going well, many are not. I'm never one to shame anyone for a particular economic situation and am always willing to help someone fit the best parts they can into where ever budget they have. For some folks $200 is too expensive but $125 to $150 would work for them.

And here in the states, the lowest AM5 CPU on offer is the 8400F for $150 by itself, no board or ram. And that's back ordered.

Every Family is different. Some have to squeeze to make ends meet like we did in AL but now here in Fort Worth TX we kinda don't have to worry, the salary you get paid for in AL was so cheap. That factory stuff may come but not in my Life time
