Saphhire x1950 Pro

Hi everyone,

I've rencently experienced some serious GPU overheating with my Saphhire x1950 Pro.

For instance, when playing Command and Conquer 3, the game would crash after 5 min. and an error message from the ATI Catalyst Control Center would warn me of a GPU temperature of 105 degrees Celsius! On some occasions the system would just shut down.

I find this odd since I had played Doom3, Quake 4, FarCry, Crytek, Bioshock and NFS Carbon and other more demanding games than C&C3 without a glitch in the past 9 months.

After downloading ATItool 0.27 (which can apparently handle the x1950 Pro), I've noticed that the idle temp is 77 Celsius, which seems very high. I would expect it to be around 45 C. max. Even when turning the Fan to a permanent 100%, I can’t get the idle GPU temp below 71C.

I’ve never overclocked the GPU which runs at 580Mhz, nor the memory. However, I’m now in a situation in which I have to underclock the GPU to 190Mhz not to overheat it, which is ridiculous. The funny thing is all games work like a treat when underclocking the GPU to such low values. I’ve checked the card itself, dusted it off, and made sure there were no cables around it. The tower case has a good ventilation since it’s got fans at the front and at the back. Temperatures on the motherboard and CPU are reasonably low (41C and 51C respectively). I’ve also changed the AGP speed from x8 to x4 in the BIOS and turned off AGP FastWrite, but it doesn’t change anything. At stock GPU core speed, it overheats.

I'm not willing to spend time and money on improving the cooling system, as the GPU might already be damaged. I guess my next card won't be a Sapphire!

@VroomBang, have you redone the thermal paste since you got that thing. It's probably about due.

I haven't. The card is 9 months old and I haven't used it for gaming much. I might give it a go though. Thanks for the tip.

You may even find more dust built up inside the cooler, it's common. The thermal paste dries up after time, use some AS-5 or MX1/2 to replace the factory stuff. Saphire memory tends to get hot, ramsinks help.
Use ATI Tool, Fan Controll settings to set fan at MAX 100%. The 1900 series run hot compaired to other cards.

Cool, I'm orderring some AS-5. I'll let you know if it fixes the problem. Thanks!

I've just checked the state of the original thermal paste on the card and it's still failry liquid. I'm not sure now if new paste will fix the problem.

If you use AS5, be VERY careful not to use too much, or you'll kill your card. AS5 is electrically conductive, and if you get too much of it around the GPU and bridge a connection, you could fry it. Use a VERY SMALL drop in the center of your heatsink like this:

Thanks for that. I'm getting the ceramic based one, which should normally be safer. I'm happy to trade off a few degrees for no conductivity. But I guess that being careful with any paste won't hurt, as I tend to be a bit messy with glue! :)

I've just realized one thing though. I'm getting the card RMA'd so maybe I shouldn't touch it as it could void the warranty, right?
