@kneecaps - If you disable the ATI Hotkey Poller service, you can have it run at 2d clocks all the time, at least until your new psu comes in.

I don't know how Windows savvy you are, so in case you don't know how to disable it, go to the start menu, click run, type: services.msc, hit enter. In the services window, scroll down till you find ATI Hotkey Poller, right click on it, select properties. In properties, change the start up type to disabled. Now just restart, and you're done. Like I said, it will run at the 2D clocks all the time this way, but at least it shouldn't be as unstable.

Thanks guys, yeah it's pretty clear. Just made a silly mistake when ordering my PSU :D

Thanks for the ATI Poller disabling tip.....that said I'm very pleased with the graphics performance currently...should I expect more graphics performance with the new PSU.

On a side issue (which is probably related to the PSU), I notice that the GPU fan never speeds up in game or under 3d loading.

Before and during POST the GPU fan makes a hell of a noise (running at 100%?), and then settles down to almost silent.

I would expect it to get fast and loud again as the GPU clocks/heats up....but it doesn't, it ALWAYS stays slow and quiet. What I see when monitoring the temperatures it it rockets up to 80+ degrees and the fan doesn't even speed up. Just seems like odd behaviour to me.

Your graphics performance will be tons better when you have the power to run at 3D clocks.

Your fan probably doesn't speed up much because of the lowered clocks and/or your power problem. If after you get your new PS, the fans don't speed up during gaming, then you may have a problem.

And finally, yes, it is perfectly normal for the fan to be loud when you first power-on. All of the newer ATI cards do that. It's like you assume, it hits 100% for a few seconds.

Hey, I have the same exact Problem I just recently instaleld the card. My 500W power supply doesnt have a 6pin rail so I had to buy a 4pin to 6pin converter.. and my clocks speeds are at 500 / 594 I can try to adjust them with ATI tool and they will go up I can put it up to the stock 621 / 900 and it will run but as soon as I try to resume a 3d Application they drop back to the 500/ 594 clocks >_> the HIS iTURBO software that came with it does like nothing at all but increase the fan speed.. according to the other programs the clock speed doesnt change at all

Im using a Rosewill R500 (not the R500-2) and I looked on my sticker on the power supply and it says that the +12 Rails (being the 4 pin molex I assume) Have 28A Image here: http://www.rosewill.com/RosewillPhoto/rp500_label.jpg

I understand this is below the 30A they sugest but would it really effect my performance that greatly?

And if my power supply truly isnt up to par with the requrements could someone sugest a good quality $40-$60 power supply that will for sure work great with this card?

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Yes, but that is absolutly no excuss for calling some one else wrong when they did no research on this fact, oh, and it seems as though alot of you are assholes on these forums and have absolutely NO idea what you are talking about, nor do you even research anything before you start crapping out bs that doesnt help at all. This is probebly the worst forum website i've been to, and that's strange too because techpowerup.com is a great website.:shadedshu :shadedshu

btw, I've done all the research and found out that it is infact a PSU problem.

wtf is this guy on about. Your research is the thing that is bs. look at the rig#2 in my signature. My X800XT PE (which needs 300 or 350W+) is running overclocked to 540/610 with the CPU overclocked to 3Ghz on a 10A/12V, 200W PSU.

I don't agree with some of his comments but he is right about what was wrong with his X1950XT as they require a PSU with a 34amp 12v rail. I know because I have a X1900XT and had to get a new PSU when I got it.

I don't know what the best is ,but I've used this one for over a year without a problem. Others will tell you it's a cheap piece of crap, but it has good reviews and doesn't cost over $100 like everyone else will tell you to spend on one.

I also recommend you go to the forums at driverheaven.net and your video card maker as they are ATI sites familiar with this issue.

2A wont make a difference. If the computer isnt crashing or artifacting, you havent got a problem with the PSU.

well I dunno its strange I got the card from newegg last week but I found out my power supply didnt have the 6 pin connector So i had to order a 4pin molex to 6pin adapter from newegg which just came yesterday, poppedi n my card powered it up and everything was fine, Tried installing drivers etc on vista and oh good lord lol nothing worked crashed freezing etc so went back to XP x64 instaleld the drivers that came with the CD [Catalyst 6.10] and the HIS iTURBO software as well. the CCC (as well as ati tools etc) said that the current clocks we're 499.50 / 594 which aparently other people have gotten as well so i know it shouldnt be anything wrong with the card, I tried to overclock it with the HIS iTURBO software but as I said in my earlier post.. nothing i hit the "iTURBO" button on the program and it says the clocks are 648 and 1800 with 100 fan but ati tool and CCC say its still 499 / 594 so yea... I try to overclock it to 621 / 900 (the default clocks) with ati tool and it runs everything runs fine for all I can see but as soon as I try to 3D benchmark or run a 3D app the card like reboots and resets the clocks back to 499 / 594 i've tried it with rivaturner ati tray tools, ati tools, CCC and its the same thing over and over so I dunno im kinda getting frustrated and angry here :banghead: after waiting for the initial delivery then the delivery of the cable and now im not getting the clocks advertised (nowhere near them) so im just wondering why it isnt working is it bcuz my power supply is only sending 26 amps to the 12v rails? I honestly cant see how 4 amps would actully make that huge of a difference a Solid answer would be greatly appreciated or at the very least a list of potential problems / solutions so that I might be able to fix this within the week :l

thanks for your help

Ok, i dont have a solution, because i have never worked with 2D and 3D clocks before, BUT i can tell you, its NOT a PSU issue.

Dude your math is off, you're 8amps short of the recommended specs. Rebooting is a sign of not having enough power.

Oh and pinchy is right and ATI is wrong. He's know's more about ATIs power requirements than they do.

30 - 26 is 4 not 8 and its not actulyl rebooting for instance right now im running it at 621 / 999 its ONLY when i run a 3D app the clocks revert to their 2D settings :l so aparently Im gunna have to fork out the damn money for a new power supply ~.~

edit: 621 / 999 with no artifacting or any abnormalities

ATI recommends a 34amp 12v rail.

It only uses 3D Clocks in 3D mode that's why you reboot/reverts to 2d in 3D apps.

GoodLuck dude

lol, there is a big diff b/w 2A (which is what i thought) and 8A

It also depends on your system...if you got a powerful rig, and its overclocked, its obviously gonna need those extra amps.

I dont know if reverting to 2D clocks is a PSU issue or not, cus as ive said, never dealt with 2D and 3D clocks, although the psu is likely to be the biggest culprit (unless there is a setting thats enabled/disabled)

Just a note, cant you get a PSU to test? And if you buy a new PSU, sell your current one...you wont lose that much money

lol its ok ;)...as i said, there is quite a difference b/w 2 and 8 Amps :p (my entire PSU is 10A   )

Yeah, but now that there is an 8A difference, im leaning towards PSU problem, especially if you got a powerful rig (which i assume you do, seeing as u have an X1950XT ;))

try lowering your CPU OC or taking it off and see what happens

and yeah, that PSU looks fine (sell your current PSU to make some/most of the money back :D)

i registerd here only for this :)
some guys have told you good thing before!!

Your PSU is not a problem niether your CPU OC, PSU 600W is good thing for this card, I have 500W and I dont have problem, and i think my friend have less than 500W and he doesent have probs to, so yours 600W is super, it could bi bad only if PSU is low quality....but this isint a case here,
the thing is that this clock is perfectly normal for your x1950XT, because it doesent need to be at 621/900 in windows so it is at 500/594 and she is colder, and when you start some game or 3d test card will automaticly jump at 621/900
you can check this out by starting catalyst control panel , then starting game and when in game just Alt-Tab in windows and you will see yours 621/900 in control panel.

pozz;)
