Is there any benefit getting a Threadripper system over an AM4 based Ryzen system if they both run 8C/16T CPU's of the same clock speed?
Obviously the Ryzen Processors are much cheaper here but Tr can have a greater core count.
Also will Tr 2 be compatible with first Gen boards?

Benchmark Scores Why sit on the Bench when you can get in the game and Crunch!!!
If all you expect to need is 8c/16t then an X370 is fine, can even get away with a B350 if you will only use a single gpu and don't need any extra PCIE lanes.

Benchmark Scores They're pretty good, nothing crazy.
the 8/16 x470s ryzen2s are faster than the 8/16 trs due to the way they're made - if you're not going 1920 or 1950 then the x399 isn't worth it, unless you need a ton of pcie/mem bandwith for some reason.

I guess it depends on your expected use of the system.
Clearly if you are going to do alot of video related stuff or alot of multi-tasking for example the TR is the way to go, if not then a Ryzen would be what you'd need but even in that case Ryzen itself isn't bad.

Unless your budget for one is limited, grabbing a 1920 or 1950 is what to get to make the extra cost of a TR based build pay off. The 1900 in itself isn't a bad chip but not really enough cores enabled to make the difference worth it vs what a Ryzen can do for the extra $$ invested over a Ryzen based setup. Personally I'd love to have a TR build here even if it's ran with a 1900 BUT I'd still go for the mentioned chips if I could.
BTW the refresh of TR is coming soon, maybe you could sit back and see where prices for the older TR chips wind up before buying.... Or just grab one of the newer TR's.

Recently I've purchased 1920X just because there were 2 price drops, Amazon Prime promo, free shipping and some more .... but if I had to choose between 8 core chips then 2700X+X370/470 is simply cheaper and faster option.
X399 is also bad idea if you think about future upgrade as I bet there will be new motherboards when will be worth to upgrade the CPU.

Depends on what you do with your platform. Are you a content creator or scientist that can fully utilize the extra cores? If yes they X399 is probably the best bet. Even then I would recommend you wait until TR2 comes out 2H 2018.

Personally I had decided to skip 1st Gen Ryzen and TR.
I have a Taichi TR4 Motherboard already, but it's not going to be used, I'm keeping that as a collectors piece safely packed away.
I can't wait to see what TR2 and Ryzen 2 bring, I may even be tempted to use that Motherboard, unless some great features are introduced on newer boards.

That's the plan, but for now I have another Intel board on the way, and a 10C Xeon should keep me happy for now.
Not that I need it, I just want to build something.

The X399 platform can have up to 128 GB of RAM, while the X370 is limited to 64 GB. Intel's X299 can have up to 512 GB.

It all depends what are you planing to do with your PC and how much money you have or are willing to spend. If you need PC for tasks such as web browsing, some gaming, some photo/video/audio editing, watching movies and listening to music, I suggest the cheapest Ryzen 7 option between 1700, 1700X, 2700 and 2700X.

However, if your main purpose is to use a PC for web browsing, watching movies & listening to music, MS office and occasional gaming (like most users) - I suggest Ryzen 5 1600/1600X or Ryzen 5 2600/2600X.
