X450 boards.

I see 4 AMD X450 boards on ASUS website now. 2 full size, a matx and a itx. Yet none of them have a pci slot. I don't see any X450 boards on any other mfg site yet, so there still my be hope for us that have a pci relic that they just cant seem to want to stop using. Creative X-Fi Fatality sound card in my case. I really want a X4xx series board when I pull the trigger on my Ryzen build. If I have to shelve the relic I will be sad.

In this day and age PCI is that pretty dated while PCIe is the new standard and Cards can be had cheap

...and for sound devices, there are plenty that can be had over something like USB as well. I personally use a FiiO E17K (E17) Alpen 2 for my headphones and it's great.

The chipset no longer provides a PCI slot natively. Manufacturers are highly unlikely to include one on their boards because it would be an added cost to include a PCI-E to PCI bridge chip. Plus it would use up a precious PCI-E lane, which AMD's platform doesn't really have to spare.

PCI is pretty much dead at this point. Many on-board audio solutions are probably on par with that card anyway. Dedicated soundcard or USB DAC is still the way to go if you use high-end headphones tho. But that Creative X-Fi is not that great tbh.

I know my pci sound card is dated and all, it's that I am a nostalgic guy who likes to get ever bit of use possible out of my gear. I should just go with a X470 and see how the onboard sound is. For my 2.1 speakers and occasional head phone use, I bet onboard will be fine.

Depends on how good those speakers are.

I like the Nostalgic hardware I have but cant carry it forward due to lack of drivers, if I could, id still bevrunning my SB PCI 512

it depends on exactly how much better/worse the new sound is. I know my x-fi platinum is much better than the onboard sound of my motherboard, even when coupled with crappy €30 logitech speakers. The difference is shocking tbh.

But then i don't know about modern motherboards. A definite answer on the subject would be nice.

Well I couldn't wait any longer. I ordered the MSI X470 Gaming Plus board, a 2600 cpu and 2x8g of G.Skil Flare X 3200. I guess my pci sound card wont be getting reused in this build. Sad.

As others have said, a PCI-E sound card isn't hard to get, or a USB device. Still, I understand your situation. I use a sound card from the same era as you, though mine is PCI-E. It would suck if I couldn't use it in future builds.

I am in the same boat on my next upgrade, I currently have a Xifi Elite pro PCI soundcard and it is still going strong but I have already come to terms with the fact that it's going to be near impossible to find a board with the slot in the future, I had to shop around a lot for this Z170 board to find one with the slot.

He went AMD already. Ps drivers for 10 or 7 for pci cards is tough to obtain...

Yes definetly it depends on the new sound is and the speakers you're using. But high range motherboards produces a very nice sound.

Cant speak for msi, but the supremefx on-board asus is packing on their boards is really nice. Not sure what dac/opamps theyre using but the quality is there. On par with entry level usb dac/amps. Even drives high impedance headphones pretty well. I was impressed. The value is really good when you think of what youd have to spend on a standalone device or peripheral with that sound.

I mean, were not talking audiophile grade stuff, but for sound inside of a computer case its very good.

I get notalgic for my old sound cards too, but the bar for onboard audio has gone wayyy up since those cards were in fasion. Its not just an afterthought anymore. Id bet you would have to spend alottalot to get a card now that outperforms some of the better onboard setups.

I had all creative cards begining with relic CT1320C and istill have them in my museum, now i have ZXR and 2 other Z-s so just get oem Z and you will be happy with it, drivers work nice with win 10 and you can put that X-Fi on other mobo with PCI or just make some nice stand for it to remind you how much fun you had with it
