I am rebuilding an older Athlon XP AGP system. And I am not sure which of these 2 cards to go with.

1st: ATI Radeon X850 Pro. This is my old card that I have used and always been happy with. I have done the BIOS mod to XT PE and installed a Zalman cooler and mem heatsinks. In WoW in could run high settings and get 50-60 fps with temps in the 50's.

2nd: ATI Radeon X1650 Pro. This thing is stock.

I have done some web research and cant get a good answer. Personally, I think the X850 will be the way to go. But, it is also uses much more power. Kinda torn here :banghead:

So, give me your opinions. :)

X850 definitely, and with a small voltage bump you can oc the heck out of it. I got my X850XT to 660Mhz on the core (almost 30% overclock!) once I went from 1.4V to 1.65V. The overclock allowed me to crank up the AA/AF settings in Oblivion, and the fps in outdoors went from nice to very nice as well.

No point in wasting money if you like your old card so much. :)

the X850 absolutely smokes the X1650, it can perform at a X1950pro level sometimes

Neither card is good enough for next generation gaming, I would recommend a ATI 3850 as it has DX10 support and would smoke the x850 pro as far as frame rates go.

yeah but considering the athlon xp's performance in sm3.0 games, it's not like he'd get playable framerates at any decent detail level and be forced to run at 2.0 anyways. Beside this sounds like a backup rig, meaning his primary is most likely shader 3.0 capable or higher.

If you are on a limited budget... go for the AGP HD 2600 Pro or XT. As good as a X850XT performance wise... with HDMI and SM3.0

Go with the x850. It has fewer features but is significantly faster.

x850 by FAR.... Sure doesn't have SM3, but the x1650 is just such a bad card....
