According to NPD data, Xbox just set a new hardware sales record the past month of June in the U.S., outselling PlayStation to the tune of a cool $200 million. The Xbox division cumulatively brought in a total $401 million dollars in the past month of June, marking a year-over-year (YoY) revenue growth to the tune of 112%. That large, $401 million number also marks a new record for Xbox and its Microsoft parent - the previous revenue record for the Xbox division was set way back in 2011. ten years later, it can be said that Xbox is better than ever before.

That same $401 million revenue from Xbox hardware clearly puts Sony's PlayStation in the rear-view mirror, as the company "only" achieved a $207 million revenue for June 2021 - a 1% decline YoY. That Microsoft managed to pull this off in the hardware shortage scenario we currently live in is impressive; and it does speak to the amount of pent-up demand that's still vying to enter the company's coffers. The record comes a month after Microsoft announced the deployment of Xbox Series X server blades to its xCloud programme, which occurred on June 26th. It appears likely that the company was distributing its Series X production capabilities between the retail sector and its own xCloud service before June 26th (with the additional time required for installation and all that entails), which would explain the sudden record in June. As Microsoft freed xCloud-bound capacity to the retail sector, the record thus ensued.

Impressive as that record (and outselling PlayStation specifically) are, hardware really is one of the lesser sources of revenue in the gaming landscape. Hardware gaming sales for the first half of 2021 totaled $2.3 billion for Hardware (consoles) and $1.2 billion for Accessories - but the brunt of the revenue flows from Content (which includes software sales, DLC, and subscriptions), which brought in some $25.4 billion in revenues in the same timeframe.

I mean, that's nice for Microsoft and all, but I can imagine this is because of PS5 availability.

Perhaps, could also be due to the utteer lack of PS exclusives that are big sellers so far outside of R+C, and sony's attitude to censorship has managed to royally piss off a small but dedicated number of PS fanboys that could be having a knock on effect.

Sure that could have been an issue. You have to give MS credit for having a 299 option so more of the market is covered. Availability could also be a sign that yields of the PS5 chip aren't as good as the Series S/X chips, which again you have to credit Microsoft's decisions.

Is the same hardware with minor tweaks??? So how can you say the PS5 chips are worse than the Xbox??

Xbox s has been available in most stores I have seen and Stores are now getting Xbox X in store compared to the PS5 that has still only been online-only, so of course, Xbox is going to sell more.

As usual the more powerful console sells more, despite the claims of console fans that "specs don't matter". That being said I still think this is rather odd, Xbox doesn't really have exclusives anymore, if I were to buy a console it'd be a PS5 simply because I know there are going to be games only available on that platform.

No they're completely different GPUs. CPUs are more or less the same though.

Might be true between Xbox Series X and S but that does not go for PS vs Xbox, that is much more about games and fanboysm.
As was said before as well, all consoles sell out instandly so if one just happen to be able to get a good shipment out there, then their sales numbers will be much higher for that month.

If we have to believe Wikipedia the PS sold a total of 8 million by now where as the Xbox series X/S did 6.

Most likely. Over here I've never seen an actual PS5 for sale/in stock while both Xboxes have only been out of stock twice*, and very briefly, as far as I can tell (* X is actually out of stock right now).

They're both supply constrained and the chips are similar enough that it seems hard to believe that MS is putting out that many more than Sony. My guess is that MS is allocating more of their overall supply to the US where the brand is more popular and Sony is still selling more globally. Or I guess it's possible that the relatively-available Series S is lifting the numbers.

Think so?

For 2021 as a whole, the Switch is still dominant.

“Nintendo Switch was the best-selling hardware platform during 2021’s first half in both dollar and unit sales,” said Piscatella.

Huh?
NES outsold the master system
Playstation outsold the n64
PS2 outsold the xbox and gamecube combined
wii outsold the x360 and ps3

Only the PS4 and the SNES were definitive winners in the "most powerful = winners" catagory, and if you want to get subjective the PS4 pro was outsold by the xbox series x. Neither updated console sold particularly well. Technically the neo geo was a SNES competitior that was far more powerful but failed. Same with the 3DO, but that's getting into experimental territory.

To be expected considering how terrible the ps5 is as a device and ecosystem and no worthwhile exclusives anymore either. Series X is a far better and more powerful device with more features, game pass and upcoming bunch of exclusives. Only die-hard stupid fanboys will continue bying sony’s abomination. I had every ps since first one while only x360 in its highlight days. Absolutely enjoying Series X as my TV gaming device while disc ps5 went straight to buddy for msrp as he’s just too invested in this godawful platform by now.

Not exactly. Both consoles are equally hard to get, but Xbox this time around just has a better game library and a lot more exclusives coming. Sony really hasn't shown off much since the console launched.

I've always disliked the PS controller, the bottom most top buttons feel like my fingers are going to fall off, and the analogs are are in an awkward position.... The Xbox controller has always been superior.

On another topic, wonder how much the console sales of both Sony and Microsoft will improve AMD revenues at the end of the year.

Probably quite a bit, but i suspect it wont be much different than previous generation considering they were also AMD SOCs.

It's all about the games, and Sony has fallen asleep at the wheel again after a succesful generation. The PS4 exclusive library was total garbage compared to the PS3, and sony seems more interested in censoring japanese games then producing anything of value.

I vomit on consoles... but if i must forcefully choose between PS and Xbox, it will definitely be Series X no contest. Main reason TES6, second reason it's just more powerful.

Microsoft's way of wining is buy all the game suppliers so they can own the rights to all the games. Before Xbox games came out on all consoles. Now they just like all the industries around them are trying to run a monopoly on it all. I have and always been a strong Playstation owner but Sony has been lacking. XBOX has more backwards game play now a days. Also stole alot of old retro games. PS5 and XBOX still same sorta hardware. PS3 actually was an amazing device with that Cell processor and programers that actually knew how to program it could make some seriously nice looking games. Alias it was not meant to be because programmers got lazy and did not want to learn how to take full advantage of the 8 core 3.2 ghz processors in the Cell.

I still have my Orginial PS3 from 2006 and it's still working great. Testament of how well it was built to last. I had friends with xbox 360 and red rings of death all the time. I took apart an xbox 360 and inside you could see why it overheated. The fans blew air out but was not next to the CPU anywhere. If you reversed the fan and blew air over the CPU it never overheated.

I own a PS4 Pro as well but I miss the Nvidia from the PS3 the graphics to me was much sharper and clear on the PS3 vs the PS4 or PS5. AMD has gotten better at using ATI tech.

I mean all that power you'll still be playing TES6: skyrim but with even less story at 20-30 FPS with intermittent slowdown. It's just the console way.

Dude, how delusional can someone be? Should I even tell you that console exclusives are not a new thing, or will you simply refute it? Remember all the games that released on PS but never on n64? All the games that released on nintendo or super nintendo but never on the master system or genesis? Hey remember how nintendo controlled what consoles a developer was allowed to publish on?

The PS3 cell processor was a compelte nightmare to code for, most developers did not have sony's 1st party backing to figure it out, and even sony's coders took nearly a decade to truly understand how to use the chip. 360 versiosn of games from that era consistently run with better framerates and details then the PS3 versions. Nothing to do with laziness, same as the N64's complicated seetup, you are not the only, not even the biggest fish int he pond, nobody is goign to devote resources to your console when it sells like crap.

And seriously, how does the PS3 at 720p render games sharper then 1080p consoles years later? That doesnt even make any sense.

I'm not surprised, as the PS5 is barely available. In the UK however, Amazon has never had it in stock that I can see, while the xbox is available to buy. This alone will cause it to go into the lead.

I don't know if I trust this information, no where does it say that this info was derived from Steam's Survey. I call shenanigans!

As for the Xbox and PS5, I'm personally no interested in them, but I glance at the newegg shuffle from time to time and I always see some Xbox version going for $300-400. Whereas I see the PS5 going for $500-800, depending on the crap they bundle with them.

If money was a deciding factor for me and I was in the market for a console, I'd be much more drawn to the Xbox over the PS5.

It does seem crazy to think MS is able to put that many more chips out even though they use the same RDNA2. BUT there is evidence in the form of the 4700S desktop kit. They were confirmed to be PS5 rejects. There are so many rejects that they have enough to sell to OEMs.

Anyways, no doubt PS5 is more popular than Xbox globally.
