Lurking in the Xeon Owner's Club convinced me to try dropping X5670s into the Sabertooth X58 and Aurora R1 I had lying around. The Sabertooth was a shoo-in with the 1402 BIOS (and indeed worked perfectly), and I found multiple references to R1s accepting Westmere chips with the A11 BIOS with no other action required. However, I had no such luck. So before I go about trying "compatible" BIOSes or trying to inject microcode, anybody have suggestions?

PEBKAC error, it seems. Reseated GPU, moved RAM to a new slot and off to the races.
