Xigmatek released the Maverick S line consisting of three rather compact, Bronze-certified PSUs a while ago. We will evaluate the line's 500 W member today; it features a semi-modular design and interesting looks. This unit's strongest point is its incredibly low price; however, you currently won't find it anywhere in the US.

Not bad... I kind of not like the 5sb spike, each time powering the PC and kicking the motherboard in the teeth, that's scary and the thing is loud as a helicopter.
  • Only two 6-pin PCIe connectors
Should not be noted as a minus really for this one. But well the price is actually low, but all things considered, for few beers added you can get even a Seasonic... And PSU is the thing on what people usually must not cheap out.

Looked at the price, looked at the cabling, thought "inside is gonna be bad"... and it was. A pity, because Andyson can produce quality stuff when they want to (e.g. Platinum R 1200W). But looking at those crossload tests and those spikes... meh. I mean, you can do a heck of a lot worse for $40, but Xigmatek should really be trying harder. The 2-year warranty is also a concern.

Standard nitpicks: table on page 2 says 80 Plus Gold, it should say 80 Plus Bronze. Would be nice if the failed Advanced Transient Response Tests (page 8) were indicated in red in the graphs and tables.

I've seen 450W units with 2x 8-pin PCIe connectors, so this unit should supply at least one. Although as it stands, this unit would theoretically be able to power a GTX 970... theoretically.

The PSU itself has the 8pin connectors, not sure about the wiring, so there is something behind this logic having 6pins. The gamble with these... The fan is so loud to cool down the cheap china caps, otherwise it wouldn't last even two years. They simply know what they have build :D. The fan probably will be the first victim itself. Then the usual chain reaction, pardon, crime scene :D.

IMHO 8pins are a 100% must starting from around 550-600W. The 500W is a middle zone so it can't be considered as a pure minus not having it.

A buyer with 970 wont use a PSU like that... Unless he's fearless or retarded, most probably both.

Like most manufacturers Xigmatek make cheap PSU's and also decent quality at a good price, this one falls in to the former category.
I have the stealth Vector 750W model and it is stable and silent, running 24/7.

Figures, Andyson also makes such awesome units as RAIDMAX!

They go budget fan, pressed to make a ruckus to cool lower grade caps, then the mysterious "power on" spike and mediocre load regulation. I'd recoil from thinking this delivering anything past a 40°C temperature rating, definitely not for a "traditional chassis" where PSU's need to draw from interior air.

Finally the idea of not supplying at least one 6+2 PCIe is a super negative, with 500W it should be ready and willing to support for a R9 280. Xigmatek figured it wasn't that decent in build/quality, and appears to have "weasel out". I've used and normally like Xigmatek products, but this isn't a PSU I'd gravitate to even for the price. Heck I might go as far to say even a 7.4 was charitable!
