The latest trend publishers are using to rake in the dough is DLCs. I'm curious how people approach them...

Dragon Age: Origin's is what prompted me to ask this question. Mass Effect 2 as well (both Bioware games). They both have tons of DLC.

You should have the option to vote for this.

Yes, but I don't want to.

Cause thats me  I think its ridiculous to have to pay for extra content especially if the content is already available from day 1. I'm aware of their jewish methods (No offense to any jews) but I still give them money and  when I do.

Dead serious, the last expansion I brought was Opposing Fronts. No way I would pay for an individual unit or however DLCs work. I've never done the DLC thing.

I don't really know what to vote, the last answer sort of fits, but not really. I mostly try and buy basically GOTY editions, but they usually aren't called that as it's mostly not Bioware games. If I can get them in a bundle like that I do, otherwise if they are dirt cheap, like JC2 had them for sale for $0.99 each, I just figured, why not. But I wouldn't spend a ton on them unless it added a lot of content, even something like Shale for DA:O, I most likely would cry and do without it.

for me it depends on the game, if I really loved the game and want more content after beating it then yeah. Take batman AA I love that game so much, just something about. I didnt get the goty edition so I had to buy the dlc, pissed me off too. It wasnt worth the extra but I dont mind the fact that I bought just cause the game is so good. Also Borderlands, had to get the dlc for that. now that I think I bought all the dlc for all my games but didnt enjoy doing it. The worst one is sf4, paying extra to have cool outfits. Sounds gay but its still cool not having to look at the same character all the time.

I ragequit Dragon Age when I got to a point of the pre order DLC in the game and it asked me to buy even more DLC. I can't stand that flavor of ripoff.

I did recently buy all of the Borderlands DLC when it was steeply marked down on Steam.

I'd pay retail for a full expansion, but the DLC phenomenon has taken the industry by storm. I hate it, with a passion.

I didn't vote in the poll because there are situations where I will purchase DLC if I feel it's worth it. $15 map packs is not a worthy price, in my opinion. I want expansions, not bite size niblets of over priced content.

I dont really like the current trend of DLC...If these were expansions which would be more then a zone or a few quest chains, then sure, the price would be right... but not the current model.

DLC would be worth it if the initial game was cheaper.

asking for $100+ for a game and then $10-$30 per DLC that should have come with the game in the first place is just insane (and yeah, thats how much they can cost here)

Agree with Mussels. If the original game price was lower, basically pricing for the fact that the original is not complete or missing content and then the dlc is priced correctly for what it is, then ok.

For instance bought dlc for Fallout 3 for $9 at EB. Great game full, lots of value and cheap dlc.

On the other hand, Borderlands was full price game and then $30 for the dlc, I didn't buy any of the dlc and noone in my clan did either, we just left that game.

Not sure how I feel about Starcraft 2 in 3 full priced installments. I guess I will wait and see how much value is in each part before bothering to buy the first one and hence any of the others.

I have loved the Borderlands DLC's - cant get enough of that game, yeah it's far from perfect but it's better than a hell of a lot of the other garbage on the market, and if DLC's can give me more of what I already like , then bring it on.

Edit : Except that Moxi arena BS pile of crap - what the hell was that?! You don't even get experience?

I remember Unreal Tournament '99 had DLCs. They were called Bonus Packs, and they were free.

It's looking pretty unanimous that few people buy stand-alone DLCs. Someone must be or else they wouldn't be doing it. Unless...

*conspiracy theory alert*

...DLCs are their new form of anti-piracy. They don't mind blowing tens, if not hundreds, of thousands of dollars on DRM so they are perfectly fine with developing a piddly little content that requires more communication between user and their servers theoretically making the DRM more difficult to defeat.

*fin conspiracy alert*

More realistically, DLCs have a high profit/cost margin compared to a stand-alone product so even if they don't bring in much, it is still more than enough to cover the cost of creating and distributing it with a tidy profit off the top.

I'm glad I'm not the only one disturbed by the trend.

the real problem with DLC is the multiplayer stuff. splitting up your games so they cant play with each other is a bad idea.

Company of heroes did that right with the expansions adding new units/races, but letting owners of just one title play against the others, regardless of who owned what.

Depends. If I absolutely love the game (IE Mass Effect 2) I'll buy the DLC (I've spent far too much on that game CE + all DLC), most games though, unless it's adding something significant, or it's not worth the money (read: MW2 map packs for ÂŁ15) then no.

I also agree with mussels, multiplayer DLC either needs to be free so everyone has it, or allow those with the DLC to play against those without (without too much of an advantage).

Dragon Age DLC is fairly reasonable in my opinion (Obviously apply UK prices and such). At least in DA the extra DLC does give you something, new gear, more quests etc.

As for buying it, I bought Dragon Age when it first came out so had to buy the DLC separately, (just "Wardens Keep" and "Return To Ostager") however when I get round to buying Fallout, i'll buy the Game of The Year Edition with it all ready pre bundled.

DLC for games like MW2, where it's just a new map, can go fuck it self. No way is that worth the money they're asking for.

This may be old to some of you, but have any of you heard Madden wants to do DLC? For what?!!! Extra playbooks and goofy alternative uniforms? EA is one company that has gone money hungry.

"Yes, but I buy them in a pack like the Game of the Year Edition."

That's the closest one for me. I want to buy the FO3 pack, and the two for GTA IV. They all seem to add a decent bit to the game.

On the other hand, Final Fantasy: The After Years (a Wiiware sequel to FFIV) has a main story (800 points) and character "tales" (300 points each). It's 3200 points, or $32 for everything I believe. Ended up buying only the main story and no extra DLC. Combined, it would have been a nice 2000 point game of decent length, but the DLC was a turn off and they only got $8 out of me.

In short: I like prefer expansions or expansion-like DLC. No interest in small packs.

It depends, most of the time i don't care at all for DLC. But it also depends what game it is, whats included in the DLC, and at what price. If it's something that improves the game significatly and makes it even more fun to play even after it's finished, then thats when i really give a damn about it. But i just don't care for new ingame hats/outfits or anything that insignificant.

Now if a game that i have been dying to buy comes out( like HL2: EP3) and it comes with an editon of the game that has loads of cool stuff included then chances are i will pick that version up. But even then, i REALLY have to be into the game to pick that version up.

Devs really need to take a lession from Valve though, TF2 is three years old yet it still gets awesome updates frequently and for free.

As i've been palying games for like 25+ years, the current state of DLC is quite concerning.

When a title didn't sell too well, DLC would boost those sales, as it was free.

Mind you ,I do realize that development houses were not what they are today...

I'll spend 1 or 2 dollars on DLC only.

Th eexception is stuff that delivers long-lasting gameplay...like I bought the GTA4 DLC, but it was on it's own, and didn't require the original title...that $15 purchase got me 28 hours of gameplay...so was worthwhile to me.

But other DLC...I can't honestly think of anything I've bought.

I remember how good ol Bethesda used to give free DLC for Morrowind and then they had to take the dark path and charge for Oblivions DLC. Perfect example of the direction game companies are taking. :shadedshu

Although I didn't want to pay for them I shamefully did. I still think they are one of the better game companies out there so I don't mind throwing my cash their way.

the worst is probably rock band/guitar hero. $2 for a new song, $5.49 for 3. I've spent quite a bit on this ill admit, rock band especially.
