Outside of pulling the card apart and trying to get a measurement on a possible thermal pad thickness, does anyone here know or have similar experience with what thermal pads I should for it?

My 980Ti has random fan spin ups. The fans rev up high RPMs for a second or two and then drop back down. The spin ups are not registered on any monitoring device and a fan curve is set. The fans can spin up when gaming and even at times when sitting idle and the fans are not spinning. I can go days without the fans spinning up and sometimes it could happen 3 or 4 times in a day.
Highest recorded temp from GPU-Z when gaming lately is 70C. The temps are usually in the mid to high 60s.

I cleaned the card off a few months ago, blew out all the dust, brushed off the dust from the fans and heatsink, so the card itself is pretty clean. I even added some custom filters for my case to help block out dust, pet dander and hair (love my siberan husky, but she sheds constantly).

The card has been doing the random fan spin ups for the past 6 months or so. The problem hasn't improved over time nor has it become any worse. The issue happened under Windows 7 and older drivers and under Windows 10 and the latest driver, so the issue should be something physical with the card and not software related.

I've heard a couple suggestions may be the cause:
1) fan problem, maybe one of the fans isn't working properly and the card isn't keeping as cool as it could be.
- all three fans spin for my card when they need to. I haven't noticed any of them not functioning properly, but I suppose it could be they are starting to become faulty....?
2) reapply TIM, maybe it's dried up enough that it's not as functional as it used to be.
- this could be a possibility since the GPU is almost 6 years old. In doing so, I'd like to replace the thermal pads as well, just to make sure I cover all the bases.

tl;dr
Looking to reapply the TIM on my old ass 980Ti AMP! Omega - I don't want to pull things apart, measure, put back together so I can continue using and then have to pull it apart again once I get thermal pads. Does anyone know or have a suggestion for what thickness thermal pads I should acquire?

Hi,
Verity
0.5/ 1.0/ 1.5 would be safe bets to have around
Arctic pads are good and inexpensive to get large sheets for all.

Something like that happened to my RTX 2080 about a year ago. The fans would spin up to 100% for a few seconds then settle. I RMA the card since i tried both BIOS'es, tried the card on two different PCs and MSI Afterburner or EVGA Precision would not control the fans RPM if set to manual or curve. I guess it was a hardware problem, (they never got back to me just refunded the money)maybe that chip that controls the cooler. So this might also be a possibility.

Hi,
On another note
EVGA used crappy thermal paste and pads on my 1080ti found out installing a water block on it
So very likely same deal with your 980ti
I picked up a evga 980ti b-stock for cheap so I know it needs a break down too I just don't push it that much it's a media center not a gamer but I'll eventually swap pads and paste.
