This isn't a certainty so don't hold your breath, but according to 'sources close to the matter' Microsoft could be set to reveal the second generation of Zune portable media players tomorrow (Tuesday 2nd October). Both Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates and Design and Development Chief J Allard are expected to attend the event, where the new 3 x 1.25 inch flash-based Zune and a new, thinner hard disk-based Zune will be shown to the public. It is rumoured that the new Zunes will be capable of playing videos and will come equipped with WiFi and more storage than competing devices. Microsoft will be hoping for more success with the new Zune than with the original, which failed to make a huge impact after being hyped up to be a possible iPod-killer.

Go Microsoft...

I'm not a fan of media players to be honest, but I'd love to see someone take on Apple just so they'd stop acting like they have the only product in the market worth buying, and stop pricing it accordingly.

I want a viable competitor to the iPod so Apple can get pimp slapped back to the market share they belong in.

I want the new ipod touch but I need more than 16gb :( anyone know if they will come out with a ipod touch later with a high capacity hd and not a flash drive?

Maybe I will get the new zune but only if the screen is big enough.

Sansa View is releasing a 16gb flash based player for 200 dollars. Resembling the e200 series but thinner and with new features. What else could a man want lol. Just check their site. No photos of the player are released yet but they have some art of it out.

Creative also released a player recently thats cheaper and better than the Ipod.

And if people want a touch screen player samsung has one.

no offence but only geeks will buy a better product over a brand name and that is why the ipod is the brand leader and most people havent even heard of the Zune mp3 player.

We got an iPod 80GB video last year for 2 main reasons, 1.) Student discount, and 2.) there are just more things available for it, accessory wise. Also, I planned to put Rockbox on it, from the start.

We also looked at the original Zune. Hated it. Even worse format support than the iPod. I really hope that MS comes around this time, and offers a product that has better format support.

Well obviously you never really looked into it because you have no idea what you're talking about.

Ipod does AAC/DRM-AAC and mp3. Zune does AAC, WMA/WMA-DRM, and MP3.

They both support the same video formats, except Zune does WMV and iPod does MOV obviously.

iPod also does WAV and AIFF. Also does H.264 mp4 and mp4 for video.

EDIT: But now that I think about it, I may have been thinking of post Rockbox install.

I am rather sceptical about the wireless functionality. Wireless gets clogged easily - try watching a movie over wireless. It is one of the buzz words they use to sell things but it is gimmicks really. Perhaps, in future, when wireless usb becomes a fact it will make sense, but now this is just to make them more expensive. Neither MS nor Apple can beat Creative and Sansa on value - ZEN players rule :pimp:

Well obviously you are one of those people who wouldn't be seen "dead" without the latest "fashion".

Considering I work in retail (yes, I'm a lowly sales asistant) it's amazing how many people who come in for Mp3 players DON'T ask for iPods, many people has specifically asked NOT to be shown any iPods because (in their words) "they suck and are overpriced".

Nice stereotyping...

Firstly, we are talking about MP3 Players, do NOT turn this into another Apple/MS arguement.

Secondly, if it wasn't MS I would have said the same thing, only I would have been supporting whichever manufacturer was releasing said MP3 Player

And third, I like MacOS, it serves a very valid purpose, not one that suits my purposes. However I do not like Apple's arrogance in thinking the iPod is the be all and end all of MP3 players.

Why do you think Apple thinks their product is the be all/end all of mp3 players? Moreover, when has Apple been arrogant concerning the iPod. Do you even follow the Apple keynotes?

Lower the price and they will have a winner on their hands. Especially with the changes they made based on the "failures" of the last zune player.
