The Mobility Radeon HD 3870 was a mobile graphics chip by ATI, launched on June 4th, 2008. Built on the 55 nm process, and based on the M88 graphics processor, in its M88-LE variant, the chip supports DirectX 10.1. Since Mobility Radeon HD 3870 does not support DirectX 11 or DirectX 12, it might not be able to run all the latest games. The M88 graphics processor is an average sized chip with a die area of 192 mm² and 666 million transistors. It features 320 shading units, 16 texture mapping units, and 16 ROPs. ATI has paired 512 MB GDDR3 memory with the Mobility Radeon HD 3870, which are connected using a 256-bit memory interface. The GPU is operating at a frequency of 660 MHz, memory is running at 850 MHz.
Its power draw is rated at 55 W maximum. This device has no display connectivity, as it is not designed to have monitors connected to it. Rather it is intended for use in laptop/notebooks and will use the output of the host mobile device. Mobility Radeon HD 3870 is connected to the rest of the system using a PCI-Express 2.0 x16 interface.
