The Radeon HD 7970 X2 was an enthusiast-class graphics card by AMD, launched on August 31st, 2012. Built on the 28 nm process, and based on the New Zealand graphics processor, in its New Zealand variant, the card supports DirectX 12. Even though it supports DirectX 12, the feature level is only 11_1, which can be problematic with newer DirectX 12 titles. The New Zealand graphics processor is a large chip with a die area of 352 mm² and 4,313 million transistors. Radeon HD 7970 X2 combines two graphics processors to increase performance. It features 2048 shading units, 128 texture mapping units, and 32 ROPs, per GPU. AMD has paired 6 GB GDDR5 memory with the Radeon HD 7970 X2, which are connected using a 384-bit memory interface per GPU (each GPU manages 3,072 MB). The GPU is operating at a frequency of 925 MHz, memory is running at 1375 MHz (5.5 Gbps effective).
Being a triple-slot card, the AMD Radeon HD 7970 X2 draws power from 3x 8-pin power connectors, with power draw rated at 500 W maximum. Display outputs include: 2x DVI, 1x HDMI 1.4a, 2x mini-DisplayPort 1.2. Radeon HD 7970 X2 is connected to the rest of the system using a PCI-Express 3.0 x16 interface. The card's dimensions are 308 mm x 137 mm x 62 mm, and it features a triple-slot cooling solution. Its price at launch was 899 US Dollars.
