ASUS Republic of Gamers (ROG) today announced the new ROG Strix SCAR 17 X3D, the perfect fusion of cutting-edge silicon and ROG engineering. Featuring the AMD Ryzen 9 7945HX3D mobile processor equipped with AMD 3D V-Cache technology for the very first time, the Strix SCAR 17 X3D takes performance to a whole new level. By doubling the L3 cache of the mighty Ryzen 9 7945HX processor, the Ryzen 9 7945HX3D gives users a boost in games that are hungry for this onboard ultrafast memory. Paired with a 240 Hz QHD display, Conductonaut Extreme liquid metal on the GPU, and a vapor chamber, the Strix SCAR 17 X3D is ready to dominate the leaderboards.

Razer Blade 14 (2023) Launched, Combines Ryzen 9 7940HS with GeForce RTX 4070

Razer today launched the 2023 Razer Blade 14. This segment-disruptive 14-inch notebook packs gaming performance comparable to much thicker enthusiast-class notebooks; in a thin-and-light form-factor comparable to business/commercial notebooks. Across the market landscape, the Razer Blade 14 is designed to compete with the Apple MacBook Pro of a comparable screen size. Razer is timing launch of this notebook with that of the AMD Ryzen 7040HS "Phoenix" processor, because it's based on one. The notebook measures 31 cm x 22.8 cm x 1.79 cm (WxDxH with lid closed), and is 11.5% thinner than the 2022 Razer Blade 14. It's also 9% lighter, at 1.83 kg. Despite its size, the notebook packs a 68.1 Wh battery, which when paired with the rather high-end hardware, offers up to 10 hours of productivity.

Under the hood, the Razer Blade 14 (2023) rocks an AMD Ryzen 9 7940HS "Phoenix" processor, with an 8-core/16-thread "Zen 4" CPU, Ryzen AI accelerator, and Radeon 780M (12 CU) integrated graphics. The main graphics muscle, though, is the GeForce RTX 4070 Ada with 140 W TGP. The notebook provides the ability to switch between the discrete- and integrated graphics. The notebook also comes with two DDR5 SO-DIMM slots for up to 64 GB of socketed DDR5 memory; and an M.2-2280 Gen 4 NVMe slot for the main storage, a Gen 4 SSD. The WLAN module is also socketed, and offers Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.2. The display is a 14-inch, 16:10 aspect-ratio QHD+ (2560 x 1600 pixels) unit, with 240 Hz refresh rate, and 3 ms response time. The display has 500 nits maximum brightness.

Samsung Launches the $2,200 Odyssey OLED G9 with DQHD Resolution

Samsung Electronics today announced the global launch of the Odyssey OLED G9 gaming monitor (G95SC model), which has been enhanced with next-level AI upscaling technology. Building on the success of last year's Odyssey OLED G8 (G85SB), the new monitor joins the lineup to open a new era of OLED gaming. "With the introduction of the Odyssey OLED G9, equipped with unrivaled picture quality, we are excited to offer our customers these powerful gaming monitors and raise the bar for OLED gaming."

Measuring 49 inches in size with a 1800R curvature, the Odyssey OLED G9 is the first OLED monitor to offer Dual Quad High Definition (DQHD; 5,120 x 1,440) resolution with a 32:9 ratio. The large and wide screen ratio enable users to lose themselves in super-ultrawide vistas—equivalent to two QHD screens side by side. At the same time, its rapid 0.03 ms gray-to-gray (GtG) response time and 240 Hz refresh rate offer players a competitive edge.

VESA Updates Adaptive-Sync Display Standard with Tighter Specifications

The Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA) today announced that it has published the first major update to its Adaptive-Sync Display Compliance Test Specification (Adaptive-Sync Display CTS), which is the first publicly open standard for front-of-screen performance of variable refresh rate displays. The updated specification, Adaptive-Sync Display version 1.1, features more comprehensive and robust testing, including expanding gray to gray (G2G) testing from a 5x5 test matrix to a subset of the much larger 9x9 test matrix, which results in more than tripling the number of G2G test scenarios. It also replaces the fixed percentage overshoot and undershoot limits when overdrive is enabled with limits based on values of Perceptual Quantization (PQ), which is better aligned to represent human sensitivity to light. These changes provide for a far better representation of the display's variable refresh rate performance, including significantly reduced undershoot allowances.

Companies can begin certifying their display products under the new Adaptive-Sync Display spec today. In addition, VESA will continue to allow products to be certified under the previous Adaptive-Sync Display 1.0 specification through the end of August 2023 in order to allow for products already in development that have been designed to meet the original specification, which was published in May 2022. A complete list of Adaptive-Sync Display 1.0 and new 1.1 certified products can be found at this page.

LG UltraGear's 49-Inch, 32:9 Aspect Ratio Screen Drives Immersive Gaming to Next Level

LG Electronics (LG) has launched its newest UltraGear gaming monitor (model 49GR85DC), a curved 49-inch display with a 32:9 aspect ratio and an ultra-high 240 Hz refresh rate. Like having two 16:9 monitors side by side, the impressive new model delivers the silky-smooth gameplay and top-notch picture quality needed for immersive gaming experiences. While designed with gamers in mind, the 49GR85DC is also suitable for productivity or viewing content thanks to its advanced multitasking functionality and extra-wide screen.

Featuring a 49-inch Dual QHD (5,120 x 1,440) resolution panel with a 1000R curvature, LG's new UltraGear gaming monitor provides sharp, vibrant images that fill the user's field of vision. The combination of the monitor's generous screen width and 240 Hz refresh rate helps create an expansive and more responsive game environment - making titles feel more real and dynamic. VESA DisplayHDR 1000 certified, the 49GR85DC also has a 3000:1 contrast ratio and a 1000-nit peak brightness, producing vivid colors and deep, nuanced blacks. With its three-sided, virtually borderless design, the monitor enables users to stay focused as they battle their opponents or explore their favorite virtual worlds.

InnoLux Goes Fast and Large with 4K 240 Hz 50-inch Gaming Monitor Panel

There's no shortage of large gaming monitors on the market, but to date, almost all of them have been stuck at the same 120 Hz refresh rate as you'd see on higher-end TVs. InnoLux had a new 50-inch panel on display at Touch Taiwan that's capable of 240 Hz refresh rate, something that is still quite rare in this segment, especially as it's a 4K display panel. In all fairness, it's a TV by all intents, just without a tuner and it might appeal to console gamers, but it's not all good news.

InnoLux went with a-si NPVA technology for the panel, in other words, this is a modern VA panel, with the potential ghosting issues that VA panels suffer from. On the other hand, InnoLux claims support for FreeSync Premium Pro support with a VRR range from 48 to 240 Hz. The panel also has a contrast ratio of 7000:1, but no brightness details were given. That said, FreeSync Premium Pro requires HDR support, although it doesn't specify what kind of HDR, but it means the panel will at least support 400 cd/m² in HDR mode. It's also said to support 96 percent of the DCI-P3 colour gamut, suggesting good colour reproduction and it's said to have a 2 ms grey to grey response time.

InnoLux Goes IGZO for its Upcoming Gaming Display Panels

IGZO or Indium Gallium Zinc Oxide is a type of semiconducting material that has been used in displays by Sharp since 2012, although mainly for mobile devices courtesy of being more power efficient compared to standard IPS panels. There doesn't seem to have been much interest by other players in the display industry to use the material, although there have been other IGZO based display panels in the past. However, at Touch Taiwan, InnoLux showed off no less than two new display panels relying on IGZO, both targeting gamers. Both panels measure 27-inches and support HDR 600. The 2560 x 1440 model is capable of a massive 480 Hz, a refresh rate that was only possible using TN panels to date.

The second display panel offers 3840 x 2160 resolution at 240 Hz, which isn't unique on the market, but as these IGZO panels are based around IPS rather than VA technology, they shouldn't suffer from the dreaded ghosting that many VA panels suffer from. InnoLux was very sparse on other technology details, but both panels have a 98 percent DCI-P3 colour gamut coverage and the QHD display has a grey to grey response time of 3 ms, whereas the 4K variant is a bit higher at 5 ms. Both panels looked stunning and this might be what many gamers have been waiting for, at least as a stop gap before OLED displays become more affordable.

AUO Shows Pair of AmLED Gaming Notebook Displays at Touch Taiwan

It wasn't just desktop displays that AUO was having on display at Touch Taiwan, as the company was also showing off a pair of brand new AmLED gaming notebook displays at the show. AmLED is AUO's version of mini LED and the first of the two displays is a 16-inch unit with 2560 x 1600 resolution, a 240 Hz refresh rate and a brightness of up to 1000 cd/m². Unfortunately it was impossible to get a good photo of it, as no matter what we tried, we ended up getting flicker on the final photos.

The second AmLED gaming display on show, was a larger 18-inch model, with the same 2560 x 1600 resolution, but an unspecified refresh rate, albeit with the same 1000 cd/m² brightness. Here AUO also claims a million to one contrast ratio and a 100 percent coverage of the DCI-P3 colour gamut, the latter something the 16-inch model also sports. As per the pictures below, the 18-inch model was only running at 60 FPS at the show, but it's unclear if this is the maximum refresh rate of this panel or not.

AUO Shows Off 4K 240 Hz A.R.T Gaming Monitor Display Panel

AUO has been busy developing what the company calls Advanced Reflectionless Technology or A.R.T. which the company was showing off at the Touch Taiwan trade show. The panel in question was a 32-inch, 4K AHVA panel, which is AUO's own variant of IPS. Although the panel was set up so there were fewer reflections in the area where it was being displayed, the panel did seem to be less reflective compared to other displays sitting next to it. However, it's always hard to judge these things on a show floor, so we'll have to wait for some reviews before passing final judgement on A.R.T. but it looks like a promising technology when it comes to reducing unwanted reflections.

The panel is also one of the first 4K panels capable of delivering a 240 Hz refresh rate, although it's going to be hard finding a graphics card capable of driving all games at that kind of refresh rate at 4K resolution. Sadly the brightness is only 400 cd/m², although AUO claims 1 ms grey to grey response time with overdrive enabled and a 95 percent coverage of the DCI-P3 colour gamut, which is better than most 4K gaming panels on the market today. Sadly, AHVA panels suffer from IPS glow, just as normal IPS panels, which can clearly be seen in the second image below.

Shipments of Gaming Monitors Fell to 19.8 Million Units in 2022, Expected to Recover in 2023

TrendForce's latest research revealed that shipments of gaming monitors have seen their first decline since 2016 due to high inflation, resulting in only 19.8 million units being shipped in 2022 for a 13% YoY decline. TrendForce predicts that demand should recover in 2023 however, jumping back up to 20.8 million units—an increase of 5% YoY. This recovery will mostly be driven by three factors: First, a number of brands are replacing their 75 Hz models with 100 Hz models. Second, the 2023 Hangzhou Asian Games is scheduled to take place in the third quarter, where Esports is set to be one of the competing categories. This will help drive up demand for gaming products. Lastly, China has finally begun lifting COVID restrictions, which means demand for Internet cafes should gradually recover.

TrendForce reveals that vertical alignment (VA) LCD monitors took the lion's share of the market in 2022 at 51%. This was followed by in-plane switching (IPS) LCD monitors at 43.4%, and finally twisted nematic (TN) LCD monitors accounted for 5%. However, it's worth noting that OLED gaming monitors have grown in popularity, taking 0.6% of the market share in 2022. Thanks to the diversification of OLED products, that market share is expected to grow to 1.6% in 2023. Furthermore, TrendForce predicts that IPS monitors may begin competing with VA monitors given that not only are IPS products increasing their market share but many IPS gaming monitors are seeing a continuous price reduction.

MSI Intros G253PF, a Blistering 380Hz 25-inch Monitor if You Can Live with FHD

MSI today introduced the G253PF, a 24.5-inch Rapid IPS gaming monitor that offers a blistering 380 Hz refresh-rate and 1 ms (GTG) response-time, along with DisplayHDR 400, VESA Adaptive Sync and G-SYNC (compatibility); a mouthwatering package for e-sports gamers, if they can live with its Full HD (1920 x 1080 pixels) resolution. The Rapid IPS panel offers TUV Rhineland-certified anti-flicker and low blue-light technologies, besides 178° viewing angles. Other panel specs include 1000:1 contrast ratio with dynamic mega-contrast; 10-bpc color (1.07 billion colors), and 320-400 nits maximum brightness. With its HDMI 2.0b connection, the monitor is limited to 240 Hz refresh-rate. You need the monitor's DisplayPort 1.4 connection to "overclock" the panel to 380 Hz from within its OSD settings. The monitor packs a passive cooling mechanism for the panel, which is what contributes to its thickness, despite being a planar (flat-screen) monitor. The company didn't reveal pricing.
