Enermax at Computex 2019 Part 2: Power Supplies

In part 2 of our 3-part series on Enermax at Computex 2019, we go hands-on with three of the company's new additions to its vast lineup of enthusiast PSUs. The lineup begins with an addition to the company's high-Wattage MaxRevo series, with a new 1800W model. This PSU requires 230VAC for its advertised Wattage, and can still put out 1600W with 115VAC. With 230VAC, the unit is capable of putting out 1900W of peak output, although 1800W is guaranteed (continuous output).

At both AC input types, the PSU's efficiency is rated 80 Plus Gold. Such high power is packed into a body that's just 18 cm (7 inches) in length. Its 135 mm double ball-bearing fan is capable of spinning at speeds of up to 3,100 RPM. This fan typically runs at 20-40% of its speed, but at the push of a button near the AC receptacle, can be forced to run at max speed. The MaxRevo 1800W comes with plenty of straws out of its fully-modular cabling plane, with at least two 4+4 pin EPS and ten 6+2 pin PCIe.

Seasonic CORE TUF Gaming Alliance PSUs Pictured

Back in 2017, Seasonic introduced its CORE line of mainstream PSUs with 80 Plus Bronze efficiency. In 2019, the company wants to win more mainstream consumers, and hence unveiled a new line of CORE series PSUs boasting of 80 Plus Gold efficiency, partially/fully modular cabling, and ASUS TUF Gaming Alliance co-branding. The new 2019 CORE series come in various mid-range capacities starting from 450W, to 550W, 650W, leading up to 750W. The ones shown at Computex were 450W with partially-modular cabling and 650W with fully-modular cabling.

The new CORE series PSUs are built with compact 14 cm long bodies, and a new 120 mm fan that can stay completely off under a load/temperature threshold. The innards of these PSUs are new, with a few segment-first features such as DC-to-DC switching, and tight (±4%) voltage regulation across all three domains. There is a single +12V rail design, and an active-PFC component. Most common electrical protections are included, such as over/under-voltage, overload, overheat, and short-circuit protection. Seasonic is backing these PSUs with 7-year warranties.

Seasonic Prime AirTouch to Finally Launch Mid-January

Seasonic is finally getting around to launch its Prime AirTouch power-supply series sometime mid-January 2019. Just to give you an idea of how far along this product has been delayed, Seasonic developed it way back in 2016, and first exhibited it in CES 2017. The series will debut with an 850W model (SSR-850GD-AT), priced at $160. This SKU has already been showing up on American retailers such as Newegg and Amazon since late-October, but has been out of stock. A variation of the Prime Gold series, the AirTouch offers a small degree of fan-control to users. Its 135 mm fluid-dynamic bearing fan comes with five fan-curves, which you can select from by pushing a round button near the AC receptacle.

The fan-control button is embedded with an RGB LED that indicates the active curve. The first curve, called "Silent" (white), kills the fan when the load is below 40%, runs the fan whisper-quiet between 40-80% load, and spools up above 80%. The second curve, called "Low" (blue), runs the fan whisper-quiet up to 60% load, and spools it up from there. The "Medium" (green) curve runs the fan at moderate speeds and caps its speed to 65% beyond 80% load. The "High" (amber) curve maintains moderate speeds up to 80% load, beyond which the maximum fan-speed is capped at 80%. The "Turbo" (red) mode ignores all parameters and simply runs the fan at 100% speed. Seasonic is backing this PSU with its legendary 12-year warranty.

EVGA Shows Off SuperNova G+ Series High-Wattage PSUs

EVGA grabbed quite some attention at CES earlier this year, when it unveiled its gargantuan SuperNova 2200W P2 power-supply. The P2 series are 80 Plus Platinum rated. EVGA thinks there's room for a slightly cheaper line of high-Wattage PSUs that are 80 Plus Gold rated, but have the feature-set of more expensive P2 series models. Enter the G+ series. For now, the series has to very dissimilar variants - the SuperNova 850W G+, and the SuperNova 2000W G+. Both models feature single +12V rail designs, DC-to-DC switching, large 135 mm cooling fans, and most common electrical protections. The 2000W model even has an "Eco mode" toggle, which turns off the fan below a thermal/load threshold.

These PSUs are part of the Cobra Gaming line of hardware Raidmax debuted in September 2017 with AIO liquid CPU coolers. The company also has a case by that name from 2012. The Raidmax Cobra PSU lineup includes two models for now, 1000W and 1200W. The 1000W model has been available in some markets since January. The 1200W model launched today.

The PSUs are characterized by a black+yellow color scheme on the units, and cable sleeves resembling certain species of cobra. They feature partially modular cabling, with the 24-pin ATX, two 4+4 pin EPS, and two 6+2 pin PCIe power (1000W) or four 6+2 pin PCIe power (1200W) connectors being fixed; while two additional 6+2 pin PCIe power, nine SATA power, six Molex, and one Berg, are modular. Under the hood, these PSUs feature single +12V rail designs, with 80 Plus Gold efficiency, DC-to-DC switching, active PFC, and most common electrical protections. A 135 mm fan keeps the unit cool. The quirky styling extends to even the airtight plastic boxes these PSUs ship in.

The internal DC outputs and AC receptacles are contrasting black. There's an intense design focus on keeping the noise output of these units low. The fan downright stays off below a load threshold, and only has a low noise output beyond that. The fans feature fluid-dynamic bearings to help low noise and longevity, to keep up with the series' staggering 12-year product warranties.

The three models launched today are the SnowSilent 550 Gold, SnowSilent 650 Platinum, and SnowSilent 750 Titanium. The SnowSilent 550 Gold puts out 550W continuous output, and boasts of 80 Plus Gold efficiency. It is intended for gaming PC builds with 1-2 graphics cards. What's common between all Gamdias PSUs is RGB LED-illuminated fan, with a rear-panel switch to toggle lighting, a and "silent mode" switch that turns off the fan, which feels too closely placed to the main AC input switch (what could possibly go wrong?).

The Cyclops X1-1200P features 80 Plus Platinum efficiency, fully modular cabling, and enough juice and straws for an enthusiast build with up to four graphics cards (ten PCIe 6+2 and two 8-pin EPS). The Astrape P1-750G and P1-650G feature 80 Plus Gold efficiency, fully-modular cabling, and cabling for high-end builds with 2-3 graphics cards. The Astrape M1-650B has 80 Plus Bronze efficiency and completely fixed cabling, while the Astrape M1-650W and M1-550W only have 80 Plus (no extension) efficiency, and fixed cabling for a mid-range build with 1-2 graphics cards.
