Intel Z390 Express Chipset Detailed

Intel released a product brief of its premium mainstream-desktop (MSDT) chipset, the Z390 Express. Positioned above the Z370 Express, the chipset has an exhaustive feature-set. It supports current 8th generation Core "Coffee Lake" processors, and is ready for the next-generation. Like all other 300-series chipsets, the Z390 interfaces with the LGA1151 processor over a DMI 3.0 chipset-bus. Much like the Z370, it features 24 downstream PCI-Express gen 3.0 lanes. Its storage setup remains unchanged from the Z370 - six SATA 6 Gbps ports with AHCI and RAID support; and up to three 32 Gbps M.2/U.2 connectors.

The differences begin with the chipset's integrated USB connectivity. The Z390 Express directly puts out six 10 Gbps USB 3.1 gen 2 ports, and ten 5 Gbps USB 3.1 gen 1 ports. If that's not a lot, it also puts out fourteen USB 2.0 ports (a total of 30 USB ports). Another major feature is Intel SmartSound technology, which the document specifies as an "audio/voice offload" DSP. This should, in theory, reduce the CPU's load in processing the audio stack. At the physical level it's still the company's "Azalia" HD audio bus wired to an audio CODEC with close to zero native signal processing. Perhaps some of that processing is done inside the chipset. The concept appears to be borrowed from edge-computing, and triggered by the rise in voice-command interface, so the chipset can natively process speech-to-text conversions.

ASRock X470 Taichi and X470 Taichi Ultimate Pictured

Apparently, ASRock's Taichi line of motherboards featuring an industrial and less flashy aesthetic, is so well received by the market, that the company is readying two SKUs based on AMD's upcoming X470 chipset for socket AM4 processors, the X470 Taichi, and the X470 Taichi Ultimate. The two SKUs are nearly identical, except for the Taichi Ultimate featuring 10 GbE networking, some onboard buttons (power and reset), and a more premium looking 2-tone rear I/O shroud that runs the entire length of the board. The rest of the feature-set is identical between the two. Both boards feature ASRock's new Polychrome RGB lighting system.

Built in the ATX form-factor, the Taichi draws power from a combination of 24-pin ATX, one 8-pin EPS, and a 4-pin ATX power connectors. A 15-phase VRM conditions power for the AM4 SoC, while a 2-phase VRM powers the memory. Expansion slots include two reinforced PCI-Express 3.0 x16 slots wired to the SoC (x8/x8 when both are populated), one PCI-Express 2.0 x16 (electrical x4) wired to the X470 chipset, and two other gen 2.0 x1 slots. Storage connectivity includes two M.2 slots (from which at least one is electrical gen 3.0 x4 and wired to the SoC), and ten SATA 6 Gbps ports. Networking connectivity includes 802.11ac + BT 4.2 WLAN on both models, the Taichi features one 1 GbE interface, while the Taichi Ultimate features a 10 GbE interface in addition to the 1 GbE. Audio is ASRock's highest grade solution, with a Realtek ALC1220 at the helm of things. The two boards could be priced in the $200-300 range.

Compulab Intros Mintbox Mini 2 PC based on Linux Mint

Compulab rolled out the Mintbox Mini 2, a smaller version of the Mintbox 2 the company rolled out way back in 2013. The Mintbox Mini 2 is based almost entirely on the Compulab Fitlet 2 mini-PC, but with Linux Mint with all device drivers pre-installed, and some exclusive branding. This box is based on the slightly older Intel Celeron J3455 SoC with embedded Intel HD Graphics 500 (and not the latest Celeron J4005). It's still claimed to be close to twice as fast as the AMD A4-6400T-based original. Besides the SoC, the storage specs appear to be identical - 4 GB RAM, 64 GB storage, but there are improvements on some fronts - dual-band 802.11ac + Bluetooth 4.2 WLAN (as opposed to 802.11 b/g/n on the original), and two wired GbE interfaces instead of just one. The Mintbox Mini 2 is priced at USD $299, just $4 more than the original Mintbox Mini, but a staggering $146 higher than the Fitlet 2. This is not because of the OS, but pre-installed RAM, storage, and WLAN module.

Intel Intros Two New NUCs Based on "Gemini Lake" SoCs

Intel today released two new barebones NUCs based on its latest "Gemini Lake" Pentium Silver and Celeron SoCs, the NUC 7 PJYH, and the NUC 7 CJYH. All models feature VESA mounting, so you can tuck them away behind your monitor. The company didn't reveal pricing.

More Pictures of GIGABYTE Aorus X470 Gaming 7, Because Moar

We headed to the GIGABYTE Aorus booth at the 2018 International CES to check out the only motherboard based on AMD's upcoming 400-series chipset visible in the entire show, the Aorus X470 Gaming 7. We snapped a lot of pictures. The first thing that caught our attention is the board's updated styling, which resembles the one GIGABYTE introduced with its Intel Z370-series motherboards. The second thing of course, was two 32 Gb/s M.2 slots, confirming that AMD has indeed addressed 300-series chipset's greatest shortcoming - lack of PCIe gen 3.0 general purpose lanes. Since the AM4 SoC puts out 4 gen 3.0 general purpose lanes of its own, which wired to one 32 Gb/s M.2 slot on 300-series motherboards, the new 400-series boards will have at least two of these slots, one wired to the AM4 SoC, and another to the chipset.

The Aorus X470 Gaming 7 could become the company's flagship socket AM4 product based on AMD X470 chipset. It's been designed as such. Built in the ATX form-factor, the board draws power from a combination of 24-pin ATX, 8-pin EPS, and 4-pin ATX power connectors. A 12-phase VRM supplies power to the AM4 SoC. It's interesting to note that GIGABYTE chose some very high-current chokes for the chip's main voltage domains. The VRM heatsinks, too, are elaborate aluminium fin-stack types, with the two heatsinks spreading heat over a heat pipe. Is this a telltale sign that certain Ryzen 2 parts could have >95W TDP? The CPU socket is wired to four DDR4 DIMM slots, two PCI-Express 3.0 x16 slots (x8/x8 when both are populated), and one of the two M.2 slots (we're guessing the top M.2-22110 slot). Both it, and the bottom M.2-2280 slots have included heatsinks. Other expansion slots include an x16 (electrical x4) slot wired to the chipset, and two x1 slots, which are all gen 3.0.

ASRock Intros X299 Taichi XE Motherboard

ASRock today introduced its new flagship socket LGA2066 motherboard, the X299 Taichi XE, recommended for Core i9 processors. This board is quite similar to the X299 Taichi, but features a completely redesigned CPU VRM, which is rated for higher current, and draws power from two 8-pin EPS connectors, instead of one 8-pin EPS on the original X299 Taichi. The CPU VRM heatsink is heavier, and offloads some of its heat onto a secondary heatsink that doubles up as a sort of I/O shroud, using a heat-pipe. This is in contrast to the ASUS ROG Strix X299-E vs. X299-XE, which are practically identical, but for a heavier VRM heatsink on the latter.

Everything south of the CPU VRM on the ASRock X299 Taichi XE is identical to the X299 Taichi, including the 4-phase memory VRM, four reinforced PCI-Express 3.0 x16 slots, three 32 Gb/s M.2 slots, ten SATA 6 Gb/s ports, networking that includes Intel-made 802.11ac, Bluetooth 4.2, and gigabit Ethernet controllers; and the onboard audio solution. The rear I/O shroud no longer spans the entire length of the board, and shrouds only the I/O, and an aluminium fin-stack heatsink. ASRock could charge a small premium for the X299 Taichi XE, even though the original X299 Taichi can very much run Core i9 "Skylake-X" processors, including the flagship i9-7980XE.
