Acer Nitro Notebook Packing AMD Ryzen 7 5800H CPU, NVIDIA RTX 3080 GPU Listed for €1950

A German retailer has listed what seems to be the long-coming AMD onslaught on the premium 17.3" laptop market - this one particularly geared for gaming. Retailer ep.de listed an Acer Nitro variant which features AMD's yet-unannounced Zen 3-based Ryzen 7 5800H CPU, a 45 W high-performance part featuring 8 physical and 16 logical cores alongside Vega-class integrated graphics. Besides the high-performance AMD APU, this laptop is one of the first to be configured with a top-of-the-line NVIDIA RTX-30 series graphics card - namely, the RTX 3080, which is very likely to be a Max-Q version for heat and power consumption considerations.

The laptop further features 32 GB of 3,200 MHz DDR4 RAM, and up to 1 TB NVMe SSD disks. There are other variants with lower configurations that seem to offer only 512 GB NVMe and an NVIDIA GTX 1650 graphics card. It seems that for now, the maximum panel resolution is set at 1080p ticking at 144 Hz. The top configuration has been listed for a cool, if not calm and collected, €1950 - a high pricing for premium hardware. Of course, variations with lower-specced hardware will be priced lower. The laptop ships with a 180 W power supply, so expect this one to be a wall hugger - and understandably so. We could be looking at an onslaught of AMD-powered premium laptops for 2021, meaning that at least in that department, it will handily beat 2020. Now if only there were significant stock of these laptops...

Intel's First Discrete Graphics Solution, Iris Xe MAX, Debuts in Acer's Swift 3X Featuring Intel 11th Gen Tiger Lake

Acer today announced the Swift 3X, a new laptop which will give consumers the first taste of Intel's discrete graphics solution powered by Xe. Remember that Intel's Xe is Intel's first discrete-class graphics architecture, whose development was helmed by former AMD graphics head Raja Koduri after Intel hired him just a week after he tendered his resignation with AMD. This is the first materialization of an Intel-developed, discrete graphics product for the consumer market, and thus should blow the lid on Intel's Xe performance. Whether or not the blue giant cements itself as a third player in the discrete graphics accelerator space - at first try - depends on the performance of this architecture.

The Swift 3X features the new Intel Iris Xe MAX discrete graphics solution paired with 11th Gen Intel Core processors "in order to offer creative professionals such as photographers and YouTubers unique capabilities and powerful on-the-go performance for work and gaming." The Swift 3X comes in at 1.37 kg (3.02 lbs), and Acer quotes up to 17.5 hours of up time in a single charge; if necessary, the Swift 3X can also be fast-charged to provide four hours of use in just 30 minutes.

Acer Announces Predator X25 Monitor: 25", 1080p, 360 Hz

Acer today announced one of the world's highest refresh-rate monitors in the form of the Predator X25. Joining in the likes of Alienware and ASUS, who have already announced their own 360 Hz in the form of the AW2521H and ROG Swift 360, respectively. The Predator X25's über-high refresh rate will leave players out of any excuses so as to why they weren't able to react in time to a threat.

The 360 Hz refresh rates comes with compromises (resolution is only 1080p), and there will be NVIDIA's G-Sync on-board (but a graphics card and CPU combo that can push those 360 FPS to really make use of this refresh rate... Hmm. That's a tougher deal). Alienware has confirmed their AW2521H monitor uses IPS panel technology, and it would thus seem likely that Acer also makes use of that particular panel technology on the Predator X25. However, we'll have to wait and see. The monitor brings some quality of life technologies, such as ergonomics tilting (25 degrees backward, 5 degrees forward), swivel (30 degrees) and height adjustment (4.7 inches). The monitor also features an RGB lighting on the back of the monitor that can light up according to scenes being rendered or according to music you're playing, there's automatic brightness exposure, and a friendly reminder schedule that pops up a warning for users who have been using the monitor for too long, reminding them to take a little walk. No pricing or release date were available at time of writing.

StarVR One VR Headset Now Available for Purchase

The StarVR One VR headset was initially announced in 2015, it amazed us with its ultra-wide 210º horizontal FOV and enterprise features. In 2016 Acer signed a joint venture with Starbreeze the company developing the StarVR to bring the headset to market, after a year Acer increased their stake in the venture to 66% as Starbreeze could not meet their capital commitments. Finally in late 2018 it was announced that developers and enterprise would be available to apply for hardware. Since then we haven't heard anything from the company until recently when a purchase button appeared on the StarVR site.

The purchase page shows availability from several distributors in Japan and Taiwan, with China listed as coming soon. The EU, UK & USA all have open expressions of interest for resellers in the region. Surprisingly no price is listed for the headset but we can assume it will be close to the $3,200 USD the developer version sold for in 2018.
