Philips Introduces the Productivity-Geared 346B1C Monitor: 34" VA, 3440 x 1440, Curved 21:9

Philips today introduced their latest productivity-geared monitor in the form of the 346B1C. The 34" panel is of the VA type, ensuring great viewing angles without any form of color degradation. The WQHD resolution of 3440 x 1440 means maximum resolution, which can be better put to use in the 21:9 curved format of the display, allowing you to seamlessly work across two different windows (like this news editor is doing right now, really). The 346B1C features a USB-C dock so that you can have a seamless workflow from your portable environment to the big screen. It also sports split-screen views and an integrated multi-client KVM switch, so two PCs can use the same monitor, keyboard and mouse.

There's Adaptive-Sync (which should add some gaming chops to the monitor), flicker-free tech and LowBlue Mode for comfort. The stand features support for 180º swivel, tilt, and height-adjustments, and there's VESA support (though that's a given nowadays). The Philips 346B1C will be available this November for £539.

LG Announces UltraGear IPS 1 ms Lineup with NVIDIA G-SYNC

At IFA 2019, Europeans will get their first look at LG Electronics' (LG) expanded lineup of UltraGear 1 millisecond IPS NVIDIA G-SYNC gaming monitors designed specifically with serious gamers in mind. Microsoft Extends Variable Refresh Rate to Games that Lack Native Support

Microsoft extended variable refresh-rate (VRR) to games that don't natively support it, through a new global setting under Graphics Settings. To access this setting, you must have the latest Windows 10 May 2019 Update (version 1903), a display that supports NVIDIA G-Sync, AMD FreeSync, or VESA Adaptive-Sync, and a graphics processor with a WDDM 2.6-compliant driver that supports these VRR technologies. For now, this setting only works with DirectX 11 games in exclusive-fullscreen mode. Microsoft clarified that this setting is not designed to override the VRR options presented by the control panels of your display driver provider (eg: NVIDIA Control Panel or AMD Radeon Settings). The option is disabled by default, and isn't visible to users who don't meet both the hardware- and software-requirements of VRR.

New Philips 49" SuperWide Dual Quad HD Curved Monitor Debuts at CES 2019

Today EPI, the brand license partner for Philips displays and audio, announces two new high-performance monitors to add to its Philips Brilliance Collection. The Philips Brilliance 49'' SuperWide Curved LCD Display with Dual Quad HD 5120 x 1440 resolution and the Philips Brilliance 32" 4K LCD Display are being unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Showcase in Las Vegas.

NVIDIA G-SYNC now Supports FreeSync/VESA Adaptive-Sync Technology

NVIDIA finally got around to realizing that the number of monitors with VESA adaptive-sync overwhelmingly outnumber those supporting NVIDIA G-Sync, and is going ahead with adding support for adaptive-sync monitors. This however, comes with a big rider. NVIDIA is not immediately going to unlock adaptive-sync to all monitors, just the ones it has tested and found to work "perfectly" with their hardware. NVIDIA announced that it has found a handful of the 550+ monitor models in the market that support adaptive-sync, and has enabled support to them. Over time, as it tests more monitors, support for these monitors will be added through GeForce driver updates, as a "certified" monitor.

At their CES event, the company provided a list of monitors that they already tested and that fulfill all requirements. G-Sync support for these models from Acer, ASUS, AOC, Agon and BenQ will be automatically enabled with a driver update on January 15th.

Update: We received word from NVIDIA that you can manually enable G-SYNC on all Adaptive-Sync monitors, even non-certified ones: "For gamers who have monitors that we have not yet tested, or that have failed validation, we'll give you an option to manually enable VRR, too."

Update 2: NVIDIA released these new Adaptive-Sync capable drivers, we tested G-SYNC on a FreeSync monitor.

VESA Rolls Out DisplayID Version 2.0

The Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA) today announced a major update to its Display Identification Data (DisplayID) standard. The new version 2.0 of this universal display standard simplifies connecting and configuring modern display products, including PC monitors, consumer TVs and embedded displays (e.g., display panels within laptop and all-in-one systems). The result is a best-in-class plug-and-play experience. Advanced capabilities supported include 4K-and-higher resolutions, high dynamic range (HDR), augmented and virtual reality (AR/VR), and refresh rates of 120 Hz and above.

The DisplayID standard was originally launched in 2009 to enable the widely adopted Extended Display Identification Data (EDID) standard to keep up with newer-generation display technologies. However, with the EDID standard nearing the end of its effectiveness, a standard with new standalone structures, unencumbered by legacy architecture, is needed to properly and efficiently communicate modern display capabilities, thus ensuring an optimal user experience for future display technologies.

ASUS Announces Designo Curve MX38VC, MX32VQ Monitors

ASUS is introducing the MX38VC and the MX32VQ, IFA 2017 product design award-winning products for their sundial-inspired aesthetic on the Qi charger stand and edge-to-edge frameless panels.with similar Qi-charging capability. The product names don't truly showcase the disparity between features in both monitors, so we'll do a rundown on both of them. The Designo Curve MX38VC is a 37.5" ultrawide, QHD+ 3840 x 1600 display with a 21:9 aspect ratio. ASUS is boasting of its SonicMaster technology on this monitor, technology which was co-developed with Harman Kardon. Display inputs on this monitor include 2x HDMI, 1x USB Type-C, and 1x PC audio input port. The MX38VC can sync with a user's smartphone or tablet via Bluetooth to play music wirelessly as well. The Qi-charger base also doubles as moody ambient lighting; the Halo Lighting base can synchronize with the audio output on the monitor's speakers.

The Designo Curve MX32VQ, on the other hand, has a smaller 31.5" WQHD 2560 x 1440 monitor with a more traditional 16:9 aspect ratio. It includes the same Harman Kardon-imbued built-in speakers, the Halo lighting base and Bluetooth integration. Ports are the same as the MX38VC, sans the USB-C port. Both the MX38VC and MX32VQ also support exclusive feature such as ASUS GamePlus and Adaptive-Sync. The 31.5-inch MX32VQ should retail in Europe for €550, while the larger and wider MX38VC will set you back some much less reasonable €1600.

AOC Officially Unveils AGON Gaming Brand

AOC, a global leader in display technology, is announcing its new gaming brand: "AGON". All future AOC gaming product releases will be under the AGON name. AGON will also encompass AOC's future gaming-related activities and social media voice. Some of AOC's existing gaming displays, previously grouped together with other products, will be rebranded under AGON.

The name AGON represents AOC's commitment to the PC gaming segment and the spirit of competitive gaming. AGON is an ancient Greek word (ἀγών), which refers to "a struggle or contest". The name is also intended to be an acrostic that represents AOC's vision for AGON.

Industry's Biggest Scaler Vendors Pledge Support for AMD's Project FreeSync

Today, AMD announced collaborations with scaler vendors MStar, Novatek and Realtek to build scaler units ready with DisplayPort Adaptive-Sync and AMD's Project FreeSync by year end.

"Since the dawn of hardware-accelerated graphics, gamers dreamed of liquid smooth gameplay free of stuttering and tearing," said Matt Skynner, corporate vice president and general manager, Graphics Business Unit, AMD.
