PowerColor Launches Radeon RX 7900 XTX Liquid Devil Flagship Graphics Card

PowerColor on Wednesday formally launched its flagship graphics card, the Radeon RX 7900 XTX Liquid Devil. Designed for enthusiasts with DIY liquid-cooling setups, the Liquid Devil is essentially an RX 7900 XTX Red Devil, but with a factory-fitted full-coverage water block instead of the massive air cooler. The block has been made by EK Water Blocks, and consists of a nickel-plated copper main material, with a clear-acrylic top, and some vinyl decals. The top is studded with ARGB LEDs. The block lacks fittings, but has G 1/4" threading, and PowerColor has included goodies such as an EK-Loop Leak Tester Flex kit (lets you check for coolant leaks).

The PowerColor RX 7900 XTX has an ace up its sleeves that positions it above the Red Devil OC—the "Unleash" BIOS. The card has a dual-BIOS setup, with the default BIOS being labeled "OC" and the other one being "Unleash." OC enables speeds comparable to the Red Devil OC—2395 MHz game and 2565 MHz boost (vs. 2269 MHz game and 2499 MHz boost AMD reference speeds). PowerColor is yet to spell out the clock speeds of the "Unleash" BIOS, but we're hearing that it will be even higher (possibly the highest factory OC for the RX 7900 XTX), along with increased power-limits. The PowerColor RX 7900 XTX Liquid Devil should be available from mid-February, 2023.

A few days ago, PowerColor teased its upcoming flagship Radeon RX 7900 XTX Liquid Devil graphics card. Today, we have the first images coming from CornerJack of Overclocking.com. According to his unboxing, we can see the new collaboration of EK and PowerColor to create the latest Radeon RX 7900 XTX Liquid Devil graphics card with nickel-plated copper block based on Quantum Vector technology, addressable RGB illumination through the acrylic top, and a black backplate that is also presumably RGB illuminated to match the block as well. Powered by triple 8-pin connectors, the card features a BIOS switch that allows users to switch between OC BIOS and unleash BIOS modes, with the latter presumably having higher power limits.

In the box, besides the card, there is a provided EK loop pressure test that tests if any leaks are occurring. You can see the card's pictures below and look at the complete unboxing by CornerJack here.

AMD Radeon RX 7900 RDNA3 GPU Launch Could Face Scarcity, China Loses Reference Card Privilege

AMD's next-generation Radeon RX 7900 high-end graphics cards are set to arrive next week and bring the new RDNA3 GPU architecture to the masses. However, it seems like the customers will have to fight for their purchase as the availability could be scarce at launch, leading to potentially increased prices with low stocks. According to Igor's Lab report, Germany will receive only 3,000 reference MBA (Made By AMD) units of Radeon RX 7900 series cards. In contrast, the rest of the EMEA region will receive only 7,000 MBA units. These numbers are lower than expected, so AIB partners may improve the supply once their designs hit shelves.

On the other hand, mainland China will not receive any MBA units of the new cards as a sign of increasing tension with Taiwan. Of course, AMD's board partners will supply their designs to China, and they are allowed to; however, it seems that only AMD is making a statement here. In addition to supply issues, the launch is rumored to be covered in BIOS issues such as memory leaks and the COVID-19 outbreak affecting production in closed factories. Of course, all of this information should be taken with a grain of salt, and we must wait for the official launch before making any further assumptions.

Intel Outs Workaround for High Arc A770 Idle Power: Force PCIe L1 ASPM in Motherboard BIOS

Intel Arc A770 "Alchemist" graphics card has an idle power-draw problem. It pulls 44 W (card-only) power when idling. This used to be acceptable some 15 years ago, but GPU idle power-draw has come a long way since. The reigning Goliath GeForce RTX 4090 pulls just 21 W when idling, and the RTX 3070, the card the A770 was extensively compared against, only pulls 9 W—that's 7 LED downlights worth power-difference between the A770 and RTX 3070. Intel has a workaround to this problem: enable the PCI-Express active state power management (ASPM) setting to L1 mode in your motherboard's UEFI BIOS setup program.

The Intel Xe-HPG "Alchemist" graphics architecture reportedly uses PCIe Gen 2-era L0 and L1 ASPM, which needs to be forced via software settings. To do this, find the PCIe ASPM settings in your BIOS setup, and enable them with the "L1" setting. You then make your way to Power Options in the Windows Control Panel, edit your active power scheme, and manually set the PCI-Express "Link state power-management" to "Maximum." This affects the power-management behavior and performance of all PCIe devices in your system, including NVMe SSDs, not just the graphics card. Intel did not put out its power-draw numbers for this workaround, but we intend to test it as soon as we can.

ASUS Unveils Exclusive PBO Enhancement for AMD X670, B650 Motherboards

ASUS today announced the new Precision Boost Overdrive (PBO) enhancement, an exclusive temperature control feature for its range of X670 and B650 motherboards designed for AMD Ryzen 7000 series processors.

Intel Confirm Alder Lake UEFI/BIOS Source Code Leak

Intel Alder Lake source code for BIOS/UEFI building and optimization has been leaked in a massive 6 GB leak that appeared on 4chan and GitHub. While this number may seem small, it is a colossal codebase, given that the regular code files take up small space. We assume that the documentation is bundled there as well, however, we can not check ourselves as the repository has been taken down. Tom's Hardware has contacted an Intel representative to talk about the code leak and the rep issued a statement for the website.

ASUS Announces Raptor Lake UEFI Updates for its Z690 Motherboards

At the end of last month, ASRock revealed its UEFI/BIOS updates for its 600-series motherboards for the next generation of CPUs from Intel and now ASUS has announced that it will offer updates for its Z690 motherboards. We're not sure why ASUS has limited itself to only Z690, but we'd expect updates for all of its 600-series chipset motherboards to arrive in due time. ASUS has been just as short on details as ASRock, although in the case of ASUS, all the Z690 boards will start on the same UEFI version—160x—when it comes to Raptor Lake support.

ASUS will offer updates for its ROG, ROG Strix, ProArt, Prime and TUF Gaming boards at this first stage. ASUS recommends using the BIOS Flashback functionality on the motherboards, or its EZ Flash 3 program in Windows. To get the latest UEFI update for your motherboard, you need to head over to ASUS' support site and download it manually according to the press release.

ASRock Releases UEFI Updates for Next Generation Intel Processors for its 600-series Motherboards

ASRock has released UEFI/BIOS updates for at least 47 of its 600-series chipset based motherboards, which will add support for the next generation of CPUs from Intel. The new CPUs are of course Intel's 13th gen Core CPU's, codenamed Raptor Lake, even though ASRock doesn't specifically mention this anywhere in the text on its portal site. We're expecting to see similar announcements from the other motherboard makers in due time. ASRock doesn't go into any kind of details as to which CPUs are supported and the company doesn't appear to have updated its CPU support lists yet, which is a shame, but not entirely unexpected, since the Raptor Lake CPUs aren't expected to launch until later this year.

However, ASRock has implemented what the company calls Auto Driver Installer or ADI in this UEFI/BIOS update for the boards and this is likely to be an unpopular addition, as it means drivers will be automatically be downloaded and installed if the system is connected to the internet. Presumably there will be an option to disable this feature, but it appears to be enabled by default, which has proven to be an unpopular option when other companies have done it. Admittedly it could be a handy feature during a new build or OS reinstall, but it's also a potential attack vector for malware.

To further help with that last bit, DDR5 has on-board power management to reduce motherboard cost and complexity. Sabrent's new DDR5 kits simply plug and play, install your memory kits of choice, enter the BIOS and hit AUTO, and reboot. For those that want to OC these kits, there is plenty of headroom to advance speeds if you want.

Reliability has also been improved by the introduction of on-die error-correction technology. Memory availability is improved by splitting the internal 64-bit (72-bit with ECC) channel into two independent, 32-bit channels (40-bit with ECC) and the addition of the same bank refresh. Combined with other features, including those that allow for up to four times the module capacity with consumer DRAM, DDR5 ensures your multi-core CPU won't be memory starved.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090 Ti Gets Custom 890 Watt XOC BIOS

Extreme overclocking is an enthusiast discipline where overclockers try to push their hardware to extreme limits. Combining powerful cooling solutions like liquid nitrogen (LN2), which reaches sub-zero temperatures alongside modified hardware, the silicon can output tremendous power. Today, we are witnessing a custom XOC (eXtreme OverClocking) BIOS for the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090 Ti graphics card that can push the GA102 SKU to impressive 890 Watts of power, representing almost a two-fold increase to the stock TDP. Enthusiasts pursuing large frequencies with their RTX 3090 Ti are likely users of this XOC BIOS. However, most likely, we will see GALAX HOF or EVGA KINGPIN cards with dual 16-pin power connectors utilize this.

As shown below, MEGAsizeGPU, the creator of this BIOS, managed to push his ASUS GeForce RTX 3090 Ti TUF with XOC BIOS to 615 Watts, so KINGPIN and HOF designs will have to be used to draw all the possible heat. The XOC BIOS was uploaded to our VGA BIOS database, however, caution is advised as this can break your graphics card.

Sapphire Radeon RX 6950X TOXIC Reportedly Boosts to 2565 MHz at 346W TGP

As AMD is preparing to launch a highly-anticipated refresh of the Radeon RX 6000 series, codenamed RX 6x50 XT series. Alongside AMD, add-in board partners (AIBs) will have their say as well, and today we get to take a look at the alleged specifications of Sapphire's highest-end upcoming products. According to Chiphell member RaulMee, who claims to possess the specification of the newest Sapphire models, we are expected to see a bit higher total board power (TGP) with the arrival of this refresh. First and foremost, the Sapphire RX 6950XT TOXIC is the fastest air-cooled model from Sapphire, with a boost clock of up to 2565 MHz (255 MHz over AMD's reference 2310 MHz model), carrying a TGP of 364 Watts in OC BIOS. Regular TGP for this model is 332 Watts with a boost speed of up to 2532 MHz. Please note that this includes the power output of GPU and memory.

Next up, we have Sapphire's RX 6950XT NITRO+ SKUs. The non-SE card is a minor improvement over the AMD Radeon RX 6950XT reference GPU and offers a Silent BIOS option. The RX 6950XT NITRO+ Special Edition can go up to 325 Watts and 2435 MHz with OC BIOS applied. Silent BIOS is also an option, and it lowers the TGP to 303 Watts and 2368 MHz. The alleged specification chart also carries Sapphires' RX 6750XT & 6650XT NITRO+ GPUs, of which you can check the clock speeds and TGPs below.

Intel Sapphire Rapids 56-Core ES Processor Boosts to 3.3 GHz at 420 Watts

Intel is slowly transitioning its data center customers to a new processor generation called Sapphire Rapids. Today, thanks to the hardware leaker Yuuki_ans we have more profound insights into the top-end 56-core Sapphire Rapids processor and its power settings. According to the leak, we have information on either Xeon Platinum 8476 or Platinum 8480 designs that are equipped with 56 cores and 112 threads. This model was running at the base frequency of 1.9 GHz and a boost frequency of 3.3 GHz. Single-core can boost to 3.7 GHz if the report is giving a correct reading. Remember that this is only an engineering sample, so the final target speeds could differ. It carries 112 MB of L2 and 105 MB of L3 cache, and this sample was running with 1 TB of DDR5 memory with CL40-39-38-76 timings.

Perhaps the most exciting finding is the power configuration of this SKU. Intel has enabled this CPU to consume 350 Watts in PL1 rating, with up to 420 Watts in PL2 performance mode. The enforced BIOS power limit rating is set at an astonishing 764 Watts, which could happen with AVX-512 enabled. Final TDP ratings are yet to be disclosed; however, these Sapphire Rapids processors are shaping to be relatively power-hungry chips.

Report: AMD Radeon Software Could Alter CPU Settings Quietly

According to the latest investigation made by a German publication, Igor's Lab, AMD's Adrenalin GPU software could experience unexpected behavior when Ryzen Master software is integrated into it. Supposedly, the combination of the two would allow AMD Adrenalin GPU software to misbehave and accidentally change CPU PBO and Precision Boost settings, disregarding the user's permissions. What Igor's Lab investigated was a case of Adrenalin software automatically enabling PBO or "CPU OC" setting when applying GPU profiles. This also happens when the GPU is in the Default mode, which is set automatically by the software.

Alterations can happen without user knowledge. If a user applies custom voltage and frequency settings in BIOS, Adrenalin software can and sometimes will override those settings to set arbitrary ones, potentially impacting the CPU's stability. The software can also alter CPU power limits as it has the means to do so. This problem only occurs when AMD CPU is combined with AMD GPU and AMD Ryzen Master SDK is installed. If another configuration is present, there is no change to the system. There are ways to bypass this edge case, and that is going back to BIOS to re-apply CPU settings manually or disable PBO. A Reddit user found that creating new GPU tuning profiles without loading older profiles will also bypass Adrenalin from adjusting your CPU settings. AMD hasn't made comments about the software, and so far remains a mystery why this is happening.
