Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III Branding Spotted on Leaked Monster Energy Drink Tie-in

Activision is reportedly putting Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 through its paces as an alpha test, and is struggling with the containment of leaks. DCMA takedowns have done little to stop the flow, and the publisher has started teasing the much anticipated 2023 CoD release. Licensing partners seem to be taking a lax attitude with regards to NDAs—new Monster Energy promotional material has been photographed in the wild. Revised energy drink brand packaging features a prominent series character—Captain Price—with the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III logo emblazoned atop the famous protagonist.

Monster Energy has a documented history of offering XP and accessory codes as part of video game tie-in offers, so that legacy is all but confirmed for continuation with this year's alleged mainline CoD entry. Sledgehammer Games is reportedly the main development house working on CoD:MWIII, and various news outlets have claimed that a November launch window is being targeted by the game's publisher. Activision has taken a good humored approach when dealing with the latest leak—their @CallofDuty social media account's response stated: "Whew. Mondays. Anyone have an energy drink they can spare?"

NVIDIA GeForce 526.98 WHQL Drivers Released

NVIDIA today released the latest GeForce Game Ready software. Version 526.98 WHQL adds official support for the GeForce RTX 4080 graphics card launched earlier this week. It also adds optimization for "Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales," "Warhammer 40,0000: Darktide," the latest patch update for "WRC Generations," and "World of Warcraft: Dragonflight." DLSS 3 is now made to get along with VSYNC On G-SYNC and G-SYNC Compatible Monitors & TVs. The new HDR10+ Gaming standard is now implemented. Among the issues fixed with this driver release are a game crash with "Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection," on GTX 10-series GPUs, application crashes with Daz Studio and Maxon Cinema 4D; and minor quirks with Fujitsu Siemens SL23T-1, and the G-SYNC logo not displaying with LG OLED TVs that support it. AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX Performance Claims Extrapolated, Performs Within Striking Distance of RTX 4090

AMD on Thursday launched the Radeon RX 7900 XTX and RX 7900 XT RDNA3 graphics cards. With these, the company claims to have repeated its feat of a 50+ percent performance/Watt gain over the previous-generation, which propelled the RX 6000-series to competitiveness with NVIDIA's fastest RTX 30-series SKUs. AMD's performance claims for the Radeon RX 7900 XTX put the card at anywhere between 50% to 70% faster than the company's current flagship, the RX 6950 XT, when tested at 4K UHD resolution. Digging through these claims, and piecing together relevant information from the Endnotes, HXL was able to draw an extrapolated performance comparison between the RX 7900 XTX, the real-world tested RTX 4090, and previous-generation flagships RTX 3090 Ti and RX 6950 XT.

The graphs put the Radeon RX 7900 XTX menacingly close to the GeForce RTX 4090. In Watch_Dogs Legion, the RTX 4090 is 6.4% faster than the RX 7900 XTX. Cyberpunk 2077 and Metro Exodus see the two cards evenly matched, with a delta under 1%. The RTX 4090 is 4.4% faster with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II (2022). Accounting for the pinch of salt usually associated with launch-date first-party performance claims; the RX 7900 XTX would end up within 5-10% of the RTX 4090, but pricing changes everything. The RTX 4090 is a $1,599 (MSRP) card, whereas the RX 7900 XTX is $999. Assuming the upcoming RTX 4080 (16 GB) is around 10% slower than the RTX 4090; the main clash for this generation will be between the RTX 4080 and RX 7900 XTX. Even here, AMD gets ahead with pricing, as the RTX 4080 was announced with an MSRP of $1,199 (exactly 20% pricier than the RX 7900 XTX). With the FSR 3.0 Fluid Motion announcement, AMD also blunted NVIDIA's DLSS 3 Frame Generation performance advantage.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II Disc Version Doesn't Actually Have the Game on it, Serves as Hardware DRM

So you live in Randomville in the middle of nowhere, with a slow ADSL that's barely a few Mbps fast, and thought you could enjoy Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II on PlayStation 5 with its disc version? Think again. It turns out that the disc version of this game doesn't actually have the game on the disc. That's right, those unlucky enough to buy the disc version found that it only contained 72 MB of data, which when autorun, gets the console to fetch the up to 151 GB of the game's payload over the Internet. The disc only acts like a hardware DRM, in the same way as certain expensive software ship with USB flash drives that need to be plugged in for you to use the software.

After enduring the massive download, you're required to keep the disc inserted to play the game. It is possible to ship the entire game in two 50 GB Blu-ray discs with the best available compression tech. The problem with CoD off-late has been that the developers either forgot how to distribute game patches, or are using the sheer file-size of patches as an anti-piracy measure; with most of them spanning several dozen gigabytes, and major updates even fetching the entire game's triple-figure GB payload all over again. This 72 MB disc-based distribution is below the belt.

AMD Software Adrenalin 22.9.1 Released

AMD late Wednesday released the Adrenalin 22.9.1 beta drivers. These come with optimization for "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II" open beta, There's only one issue fixed with this release, and that's Enhanced Sync causing an intermittent black-screen to occur when playing games or videos using extended displays, and switching the Enhanced Sync feature on or off. Support appears to have been added for various new Radeon 600M-series iGPU models, which feature with the recently announced Ryzen 7020 and Athlon 7020 "Mendocino" entry-level processors. The upcoming Ryzen 7000 "Raphael" desktop processors are expected to feature a similar class of iGPU.

Intel to Bundle AAA Games and AI-optimized Creativity Software with Arc + 12th Gen Core Prebuilts

Intel is preparing to announce a mega games+software bundle for prebuilt-desktops and notebooks that combine 12th Gen Core "Alder Lake" processors and Arc "Alchemist" graphics. The bundle covers select models of 12th Gen Core i5, Core i7, and Core i9 processors, along with Arc A500-series and Arc A700-series graphics. The total retail value of the bundle can be as high as $370.

Among the premium games bundled are "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II" (2022), "Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed," "Gotham Knights," and "Vampire: The Masquerade—Bloodhunt." The Featured Software bundle, from which you can choose 3 out 5, include PowerDirector 365, D5 Render (limited subscription), MAGIX Video Pro X14 (limited subscription), Topaz Gigapixel AI, and XSplit Premium Suite. All the games in the bundle either are or will be optimized for Arc "Alchemist" graphics, and will feature XeSS. All the productivity software included takes advantage of the AI-acceleration capabilities and Hybrid architecture of 12th Gen Core processors. The list of eligible processors and graphics cards are tabled below.

Intel Posts XeSS Technology Deep-Dive Video

Intel Graphics today posted a technological deep-dive video presentation into how XeSS (Xe Super Sampling), the company's rival to NVIDIA DLSS and AMD FSR, works. XeSS is a gaming performance enhancement technology where your game is rendered by the GPU at a lower resolution than what your display is capable of; while a high-quality upscaling algorithm scales it up to your native resolution while minimizing quality losses associated with classical upscaling methods.

The video details mostly what we gathered from our older articles on how XeSS works. A game's raster and lighting is rendered at a lower-resolution, frame-data along with motion vectors are fed to the XeSS upscaling algorithm, and is then passed on to the renderer's post-processing and the native-resolution HUD is applied. The XeSS upscaler takes not just motion vector and the all important frame inputs, but also temporal data from processed (upscaled) frames, so a pre-trained AI could better reconstruct details.
