MSI Introduces Power Efficient N250GTS Green Series

Galaxy Unveils First Single-Slot Air-Cooled GeForce GTX 260 Accelerator

Constantly innovating new graphics cards designs, Galaxy pushed the limits of engineering by coming up with the first GeForce GTX 260 with a single-slot air cooler. To achieve this, the company designed its own long cooler based on the Vapor Chamber (VC) technology. A VC plate sits on top of the GPU and the aluminum base-plate of the cooler (to cool the memory) On top of the VC plate is a dense copper channel array through which air directed by the blower passes. There is a separate heatsink over the VRM area, which cools off under the air-flow from the main cooler.

The entire set of heatsinks is neatly packed under an aluminum shroud. The card packs standard features of the GeForce GTX 260, including 216 shader processors, 896 MB of GDDR3 memory across a 448-bit memory interface, 3-way SLI support, and support for DirectX 10. Connectivity options include one each of DVI-D, HDMI, and S-Video/composite. It draws power from two 6-pin PCI-E power connectors. Availability and pricing of this card is not known just as yet.

Clarkdale IGP Detailed, Tested

Intel's upcoming "Clarkdale" is special for two reasons: it is the first 32 nm based processor from Intel, and that it's the first processor that comes with a graphics processor built in, something AMD conceptualized a long time ago. Under the hood (read: integrated heat-spreader), Clarkdale is a busy package, that holds a CPU complex die (that houses the main processing cores, cache, a dual-channel DDR3 integrated memory controller, and a Quickpath interconnect controller, that connects the die to its neighbor, a northbridge-iGraphics die that houses most northbridge components including a PCI-Express 2.0 root complex, the star-attraction IGP and a DMI connection to the "platform controller hub (PCH)".

NVIDIA Presents Support for Windows 7 DirectX Compute

In an internal presentation perhaps to its primary clients, NVIDIA presented support for Windows 7 DirectX Compute. For a welcome change, the slides show no signs of NVIDIA's own CUDA technology, and in turn promise huge performance gains when a Windows 7 machine is aided with an NVIDIA graphics processor. The gains NVIDIA predicts range anywhere between 2 times to 20 times over plain CPU-driven processing, focusing on media-related applications such as Cyberlink PowerDirector, MotionDSP vReveal, and of course Badaboom.

DirectX Compute API will be natively built into Windows 7. It supports both existing DirectX 10 compliant GPUs, and future DirectX 11 ones. Along with pledging full support for it, NVIDIA also explains how the GPU becomes an increasingly important component of the PC, being "central to the Windows 7 experience". As a bonus tidbit, it adds that on Windows 7 the SLI multi-GPU technology works 10% faster than on Windows XP.

CrossOver to Bring DirectX 10 Support to Linux and Mac

Codeweavers, the company behind CrossOver, a software that allows Linux and Mac users to run Windows applications, is readying support for Microsoft's DirectX 10 API on in upcoming versions of CrossOver Games. WARP10 Brings in DirectX 10 CPU Acceleration

Back when Redmond was gearing up for the launch of Windows Vista, the PC hardware industry had its own plans, of brandishing support for the new operating system. Microsoft then came up with its "Windows Vista-Capable" hardware tag, which eventually put the company into an embarrassing situation where users would rant about their hardware, more so branded PCs and notebooks, being anything but capable of the OS. That was because vendors sold PCs with dated DirectX 9 supportive hardware, which didn't quite qualify to be "capable" of the DirectX 10 API the OS shipped with. The company even saw itself facing charges for false marketing.

To avoid that happening with the next release of the OS, Windows 7, Microsoft shaped up the Windows Advanced Rasterization Platform (WARP10). WARP10 is a component of the DirectX 10 API that provides software rasterization for all DirectX 10 calls, using every available hardware component the PC has. Think of it as 100% software acceleration in the absence of compliant hardware. It is shipping in beta form in the November 2008 DirectX SDK. Now, even a Pentium III 800 MHz will be "capable" of rendering Direct3D 10 scenes, as Microsoft puts it. With this, Microsoft guarantees that any and every PC or notebook carrying the "Vista Capable" sticker would be able to use every single feature the OS has to offer, including DirectX 10. WARP10 benefits from multi-threaded and multi-core CPUs, with specific benefits coming out from the availability of SSE4.1 instruction sets. Microsoft claims that even the CPU in Windows Vista's minimum system requirements list will be capable of WARP10. The excitement however, dies down when you find out just how capable today's CPUs are in accelerating 3D: An Intel Core i7 was able to "run" Crysis, on a resolution of 800 x 600, churning out a proud 7.36 frames per second (at least it managed to beat Intel's best integrated graphics). Three New NVIDIA Tools Help Dev's Quickly Debug and Speed-up Games

AMD 780G-based Mini-ITX Motherboard in the Works

Just when you thought Mini-ITX would mean extremely compact system components for great HTPC builds, came in the limitations of integrated graphics and relatively weak processors. VIA for example, have had ITX boards for quite some time. Let's face it, the ATI RV770 and its derivatives have become a rage. Everybody loves this chip and wants a card based on this, be it the card that made NVIDIA slash their prices, the HD4850 or the HD4870 which rivals the GeForce GTX 260 at a decent price. In surveys conducted by several websites, be it TweakTown or Hexus.net, majority community members chose ATI as a brand over NVIDIA, rougly indicating that the HD4000 series has done an excellent repair job with ATI and its brand value.

Nothing (exciting) is going NVIDIA's way these days, their notebook graphics division has taken a beating over the recent faulty parts issue. The NVDA stock is a little volatile at the stock market these days, after the company announced it predicts weaker earnings this quarter financial year. Here's something to ponder: If NVIDIA predicts weaker earnings, how come talks are they have something to counter the R700, which AMD already made statements about, saying it will "overwhelm the GeForce GTX 280"?

Intel to Ready DirectX 10 IGP Driver By the End of April

Intel is planning to announce a DirectX 10 driver for its IGP chipsets around the end of April, DigiTimes reports. The company's G35 chipset was originally planned to launch last year with native DirectX 10 support, however due to driver issues products eventually went to market without support. The driver will be labeled as version 15.9 and will support the G35 chipset as well as the upcoming G45/GM45 IGP chipsets and notebook GM965/GL960 chipsets. The only Intel product that was reported to support DirectX 10, but will be missing in this driver will be the desktop G965 chipset.

DirectX 10.1 will be the Final Update for DirectX 10

AMD has revealed that Microsoft will not be releasing several versions of DirectX this time round, as was the case with DirectX 9, instead it will focus on DirectX 11 after the 10.1 update for DirectX 10 is released. With DirectX 9, Microsoft released major updates a number of times to allow for different shader models (2.0, 2.0a, 2.0b and 3.0). However, Microsoft looks set to encourage graphics companies like ATI and NVIDIA to focus on increasing performance rather than adding more features for the next few years, at least until the launch of DirectX 11. This could potentially pave the way for NVIDIA and ATI to work on multi-GPU graphics cards without the need to keep adding functionality. Microsoft will almost certainly continue to provide minor updates for DirectX, just with no major changes integrated.

Techland has issued an DirectX 10 enhancement pack version 1.1.1.0 for Call of Juarez, changing the game substantially introducing various changes including gameplay modifications:
