Fractal's Founder, Chairman, and CEO, Hannes Wallin, in a LinkedIn post, announced that he is resigning as CEO of the company with effect from January 1, Fractal's board has selected current VP of Sales, Jonas Holst, to succeed him as CEO on that date. Wallin will continue as Chairman of the company, and stated that he remains the company's largest shareholder, to reassure everyone that he remains interested in the growth of the company. Fractal Design is taking the subtle route with its new Terra compact PC case, its sole new product on display at Computex - the small form factor Mini-ITX 10.4-liter enclosure has been "designed and engineered to reshape the small form factor gaming experience." Its creators have decided upon an unusual combination of materials and hues - the front panel features a wooden section where the power button and front ports are located, including USB 3.1 Gen 2 Type-C (offering 20 Gbps transfer speeds and fast charging). The overall aesthetic is fitting for a comfortable home environment, where RGB-laden gaming PCs can sometimes look out of place.

The Terra is offered up in three shades: Silver, Jade and Graphite - with its mostly aluminium construction sand blasted and anodized to give an intriguing textured look, with CNC-milled detailing. The front is comprised of an 8 mm-thick aluminium panel and a sliver of FSC-certified solid walnut. The case's truly dinky form factor (measuring 343 x 153 x 218 mm) can accommodate powerful GPUs up to 322 mm in length, as well as SFX and SFX-L format PSU models. A pair of SSDs can be installed internally via dedicated 2.5" drive mounts - there is only space for one storage unit if the user configures their Terra with a longer (SFX-L) power supply.

The Fractal Design Ridge SFF tower-type case won critical praise including from us, for its unique design, well-planned interiors, and room for even triple-slot graphics cards with a little adjustments. The case relies on a PCIe riser cable to maintain its SFF form, since the graphics card has to be oriented vertically. The riser included with the case meets PCI-Express 4.0 standards, but end-users started experiencing problems running their latest-generation PCIe Gen 4 graphics cards with this case, with the problem being localized to the riser cable. Fractal investigated this issue, and confirmed the issue.

Apparently, the PCIe riser included with the Fractal Ridge, while rated for PCIe Gen 4, has a design flaw that affects signal integrity. The riser is found to be only stable with PCIe Gen 3 or lower. The company is recommending a workaround for end-users while it works on a solution: to confine PCIe to Gen 3 mode using the motherboard's UEFI setup program (BIOS setup program), in which you can restrict the x16 PEG slot to Gen 3 mode. "We are developing a solution to enable full PCIe 4.0 compatibility, but until that is ready, we will update our listings to reflect that only PCIe 3.0 compatibility is guaranteed," the company said in a statement.

We have discovered an issue with our all-in-one watercooler Lumen. Following user reports of an increase in CPU temperatures, an investigation was started to determine the potential cause. Our findings conclude that the soldering material used in the aluminium radiator, as well as impurities introduced during manufacturing, may cause a reaction with the chemical composition of the cooling fluid. Over time this may lead to sediment build-up in the circulating liquid getting caught in the fins of the CPU block, causing an increase in temperatures as a result of the blockage.

Although Lumen units that are not currently causing temperature issues are safe for continued use, the experience of our users is our main priority. We have therefore decided to halt all Lumen sales globally, until we are satisfied that the quality standards we and our users expect are fully met. In order to address the issue, our teams will be working on a new version with an updated radiator and a new liquid formula, produced following revised processes and guidelines for assembly. With our currently estimated timeline, we are hoping to have new units available as replacements for Lumen owners, as well as substitutes for stock at distributors and resellers; in about six weeks. A web form for users to request a replacement can be found on our dedicated website, which also provides ongoing updates, timeline and further information.
