Acer Expands Stereoscopic 3D Lineup With SpatialLabs View Series Displays

Acer today announced two additions to its SpatialLabs lineup of products: the Acer SpatialLabs View for personal entertainment and Acer SpatialLabs View Pro for commercial audiences. Both are standalone 15.6-inch 4K displays that can be connected to another PC, providing users with portable access to the SpatialLabs suite of experiences. Not just intended for highly-skilled creators, however, this generation of devices brings glasses-free stereoscopic 3D technology to gamers and home-entertainment enthusiasts, too.

Gamers and creators alike will appreciate the series' lightweight design (less than 1.5 kg / 3.3 lbs), making it easy to put in a bag and take to a LAN party or product pitch session. Creators in particular can depend on 100% coverage of the Adobe RGB color gamut, but gamers will also appreciate the devices' 400 nits of brightness. While the Acer SpatialLabs View comes with an all-new stereoscopic 3D gaming platform, the Acer SpatialLabs View Pro comes with both the technology necessary to realize a user's creations and also an intelligent industrial design that simplifies deployment—a combination that leads to more impactful storytelling opportunities.

Gigabyte Launches 55-inch Android Powered Gaming Monitor

Gigabyte's latest gaming product seems to be aimed towards console gamers rather than PC gamers, as the S55U gaming monitor is quite an odd duck when it comes to the spec. For starters, it sports a 54.6-inch Quantum Dot VA panel with a 4K resolution, which is said to offer a typical brightness of 500 cd/m² and a peak brightness of 1500 cd/m², as well as a contrast ratio of 5000:1. This is thanks to array based LED backlight, although Gigabyte only has only gone for 132 zones, which is the lowest zone count we've seen to date. It has a refresh rate of 120 Hz and it has a response time of 5 ms on average, although Gigabyte also quotes a minimum response time of 2 ms. The panel is said to deliver 140 percent of the sRGB colour space and 96 percent of DCI-P3. It also supports FreeSync Premium, VRR and ALLM, which means gaming should be pretty much tear free. Dolby Vision, HDR10, HDR10+ and the HLG HDR standards are also part of the package.

However, as the S55U is a not-TV it has two HDMI 2.1 ports (one with eARC), both of which are capable of 48 Gbps signals, as well as two HDMI 2.0 ports, but it lacks a DisplayPort, making it just as PC friendly as your average TV. Other connectivity consists of a USB 3.2 Gen 1 (5 Gbps) port, a single USB 2.0 port, a headphone jack, a Toslink connector and an unspecified Ethernet jack. There's also built-in support for WiFi and Bluetooth, as well as a pair of 10 W speakers. Despite not being a TV, the S55U runs an unspecified version of what appears to be Android TV and it's said to have support for Chromecast, the Google Assistant and maybe more importantly, Google Play.

PC Shipments Begin to Slow Following Two Years of Strong Growth, According to IDC

Global shipments of traditional PCs, including desktops, notebooks, and workstations, declined 5.1% in the first quarter of 2022 (1Q22) but exceeded earlier forecasts, according to preliminary results from the International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly Personal Computing Device Tracker. The PC market is coming off two years of double-digit growth, so while the first quarter decline is a change in this momentum, it doesn't mean the industry is in a downward spiral. Despite ongoing supply chain and logistical challenges, vendors still shipped 80.5 million PCs during the quarter. The 1Q22 volume marks the seventh consecutive quarter where global shipments surpassed 80 million, a feat not seen since 2012.

"The focus shouldn't be on the year-over-year decline in PC volumes because that was to be expected. The focus should be on the PC industry managing to ship more than 80 million PCs at a time when logistics and supply chain are still a mess, accompanied by numerous geopolitical and pandemic-related challenges," said Ryan Reith, group vice president with IDC's Worldwide Mobile Device Trackers. "We have witnessed some slowdown in both the education and consumer markets, but all indicators show demand for commercial PCs remains very strong. We also believe that the consumer market will pick up again in the near future. The result of 1Q22 was PC shipment volumes that were near record levels for a first quarter."

Dell Launches Pair of New 32-inch Gaming Monitors

The two models are the G3223Q and G3223D, with the G3223Q sporting a 4K 144 Hz Fast IPS panel, with the G3223D also using a Fast IPS panel, but dropping the resolution to 2560 x 1440 while upping the refresh rate to 165 Hz. The G3223D is only rated for HDR 400, while the G3223Q gets HDR 600 support, although both appear to be edge-lit panels. Other common features include a 1 ms response time (grey-to-grey), a contrast ratio of 1000:1 and a 95 percent DCI-P3 colour gamut.

Alienware's 34-inch QD-OLED Monitor Gets a Price

Remember that 34-inch QD-OLED monitor that Alienware announced at CES earlier this year? The company has finally worked out how much it's going to charge for it, although there is still no fixed availability date. At US$1,299 the AW3423DW is going to be a $100 pricier than the AW3821DW, which sports a 38-inch Nano IPS panel with a resolution of 3840x1600, rather than the 34-inch QD-OLED panel with a resolution of 3440x1440 of the AW3423DW.

Obviously the two display technologies aren't comparable, but it's at least an indication of how pricy QD-OLED will be initially, compared to more traditional display technologies. Both displays feature G-Sync Ultimate, so it's not as if Dell has tried to cut any corners here. The AW3423DW does offer a higher refresh rate of 175 Hz vs 144 Hz for the AW3821DW, which may be an advantage to some, but the official HDR certification is oddly enough only HDR 400 vs HDR 600, despite the fact that Dell claims it can deliver up to 1000 cd/m². That said, the black levels of the AW3423DW should be vastly superior, as should the colour gamut. The display is said to be available sometime early this spring, presumably in the US market first.

The ColorEdge CG2700X and CG2700S display at 4K UHD and 2K WQHD resolution respectively. The remarkable detail ensures that high resolution content is displayed crisply, while the 27-inch screen provides ample space for displaying editing windows, toolbars, palettes, or other applications. This makes the monitor versatile for video editing, 3DCG creation, game development, photography, and other creative fields.
