ASUS Readies AMD-based Eee PC 1015T Netbook

ASUS' Eee PC series of netbooks is finally going to get an AMD-based model, the 1015T. This 10.1 inch netbook has a 1024 x 600 pixel screen, and is driven by an AMD V105 single-core processor based on the K8 architecture. The V105 is a 45 nm based processor with 1.20 GHz clock speed, HyperTransport 2 GT/s system interface, 128 KB of L1 and 512 KB of L2 cache, and a TDP of 9W. The processor is accompanied by RS880 chipset, with integrated ATI Radeon HD 4200 graphics. The 1015T packs 512 MB of memory, 250 or 320 GB HDD with 500 GB of web-based storage, 802.11 b/g/n WiFi, Bluetooth 3.0 (optional), and a battery with up to 6 hours of operation on a full-charge. There is no word on its pricing.

ASUS Intros Eee PC 1005PR Netbook

ASUS introduced its newest Eee PC, the 1005PR 10.1-inch netbook. Equipped with a 1366 x 768 pixel screen, the 1005PR is capable of 720p HD video playback, although the HD video processing is done by its Broadcom Crystal HD processor, which aides the Intel Atom N450 1.66 GHz processor. There is 1 GB of DDR2 memory, 250 GB of storage along with 500 GB of cloud-based storage, 0.3 MP webcam, 10/100 Ethernet, WiFi, Bluetooth, and "Chiclet" keyboard that is said to offer good tactile feedback. The 6-cell battery is rated to go for up to 11 hours on a full charge. Windows 7 Starter is the OS of choice. Backed with 1 year warranty, the Eee PC 1005PR retails for around $400.

Intel to Wait Until at Least Q3 2010 to Release Ultra-Thin Notebook Processors

The halting of production of Acer's ultra-thin notebooks, and disappointing sales from all notebook manufacturers for this market segment has prompted Intel to wait until the third quarter to release its new line of Atom processors. Sources interviewed by DigiTimes hint that the release date may be pushed back even further if demand is not high enough by Q3. Notebook manufactures say that ultra-thin notebooks accounted for only 10-15% of their sales for 2009 instead of the predicted 20-30%.

Dell Releases Performance Plus Pack for Mini 10 Netbook

Dell gave its Pine-Trail based Mini 10 netbook a specifications update to create a variant, called the "Performance Plus" option. The variant includes Broadcom's Crystal HD chip, that accelerates HD video on the netbook's 720p capable display. The Crystal HD chip also helps playback of full-HD 1080p video. It also includes a 10 inch screen with a native resolution of 1366 x 768 pixels. The audio controller packs SRS DSP for audio effects. HDD space is also upped to 250 GB (vs. 160 GB on the base-model). The 56WHr 6-cell battery maintains high rated battery life with these new components integrated. The Performance Plus pack can be opted for on Dell's online store. The Mini 10 with this pack sells for around $410.

Intel Pushes for Next Gen Netbook/Nettop Platform by Early 2010

Intel's Atom processor platform will get its successor in the next-generation "Pine Trail" platform sooner than expected, what Intel refers to as a 'fast transition to the next-generation platform'. The company plans to detail the new platform for netbooks and nettops on the 21st of December, 2009, by means of a press release. Launches of products based on the new Atom N450 will start as early as by 4th January, 2010, in time for the CES 2010 event.

At the center of the Pine Trail platform is the "Pineview" processor. Unlike its predecessor, Pineview integrates a DDR2 memory controller, graphics processor, and a video decoding processor by Broadcom into a single package. The new processor will support the x86-64 instruction set, indicating that netbooks and nettops could use over 4 GB of memory very soon. The processor also comes with higher performance, and a brand new chipset. Sources reveal the following three initial models to X-bit labs:
  • Intel Atom N450: single-core with Hyper-Threading support, 1.66GHz, 512KB cache, x86-64, BGA437 package, $63 price-point;
  • Intel Atom D510: dual-core with Hyper-Threading support, 1.66GHz, 1MB cache, x86-64, BGA437 package, $63 price-point;
  • Intel Atom D410: single-core with Hyper-Threading support, 1.66GHz, 512KB cache, x86-64, BGA437 package, $43 price-point.

Acer Intros Aspire One AOD250, Includes Dual-Boot Option with Android and Windows XP

Acer America, the world's second largest notebook PC vendor and third largest PC vendor1, today announced U.S. availability of the Aspire One AOD250 netbook featuring a dual-boot operating system including Android and Windows XP Home. The open design of Android gives Aspire One users faster connections to the Internet and increased access to productivity and entertainment applications. Continuing to push the envelope on mobile computing solutions, Acer is offering the 10.1-inch Aspire One AOD250 with Android and Windows XP to U.S. customers with prices beginning at $349.99.

The Aspire One AOD250 netbook includes a dual-boot feature allowing users to switch between Android and Windows XP Home operating systems with just a click of a mouse. Designed specifically for mobile devices and applications, Android allows the Aspire One netbook to boot up and shut down quickly with "instant on" Internet connectivity, saving time and boosting productivity.

Fujitsu Unveils CULV 11.6 inch LOOX C Netbooks

Fujitsu Japan introduced its stylish new FMV LOOX C 11.6 inch netbook series. These are powered by Intel's CULV Core 2 Duo and Celeron processors depending on the variants. The specifications include a 11.6 inch display with 1366 x 768 pixel native resolution, the Intel GS45 Express chipset houses Intel GMA 4500MHD integrated graphics. The higher-end LOOX C/E70 sports a Core 2 Duo SU9400 1.40 GHz processor, while the C/E50 has a Celeron SU2300 1.20 GHz processor. While the former comes with a rated battery life of 9.2 hours, the latter has 6.2 hours of it. Both come with 2 GB of DDR2 memory, and 320 GB of storage.

Connectivity options on the LOOX C include Ethernet, 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.1+EDR, and D-Sub to connect to displays. The card-reader is its only removable storage, while three USB ports allow for more storage devices. The C/E50 goes on sale in Japan this 22nd, for 80,000 JPY (around US $890), while the C/E70 comes a little later on the 29th, priced under 100,000 JPY (US $1,113).

Samsung Prepares N130 and N140 Netbooks

Samsung announced its N130 and N140 netbooks today. These feature 10.1 inch LED-backlit screens, Intel Atom N270 1.60 GHz or Atom N280 1.66 GHz processor, 1 GB of memory, and 160 GB of storage. Connectivity options include 10/100 Ethernet, 801.11 b/g/n WiFi, Bluetooth,and 3-in-1 memory card reader. A VGA webcam heads the screen. The two largely similar models differ with the N130 having 1.5W speakers, and a 3-cell battery, while the N140 having 3W speakers and a 6-cell battery that is rated to last for 11 hours. Both measure 10.3 x 7.3 x 1.2 inches, and weigh in at 2.8 lbs (1.27 kg). When it starts selling, the two are reportedly going to come with Windows 7 Starter Edition, Office Home and Student, and a Microsoft SkyDrive-based backup solution pre-installed. There is no word on pricing yet. Pictured below (in order) are N130 and N140.

Epson Prepares Endeavor Na02mini-V Netbook

Known more for its printers, projectors and other office-automation equipment, Epson is now venturing into ULPC with the Endeavor Na02mini-V. This 10.1 inch netbook packs the most common pieces of hardware found in its category, with a 1024 x 600 pixel screen, Intel Atom N280 1.66 GHz processor running on Intel 945GSE chipset, 1 GB DDR2 memory, gigabit Ethernet and WiFi (IEEE802.11b/g/n). Fixed storage is care of a relatively fast 160 GB 5400 rpm hard-drive, while a 3-in-1 memory card reader makes for the rest of it. It comes with Windows XP Home Edition SP3 pre-installed as the OS. Available for pre-order on Epson Japan store, it is priced at 39,800 JPY. Epson however, will start shipping these only in late November.

MSI Readies AMD-Based Wind12 U210 Ultra-Portable

Having recently announced the Wind12 U200 ultra-portable, MSI is readying its twin based on the AMD Yukon ULV platform. While the U200 uses an Intel Penryn ULV SU3500 processor, the U210 will feature AMD Athlon Neo MV-40 1.6 GHz. Two sub-variants of this, bring about slight changes in the specs. The U210-002 is priced at 399€, and packs 1 GB of memory, 160 GB of storage, and Windows XP Home. The 449€ U210-010 on the other hand, sports 2 GB of memory, 250 GB of storage, and Windows Vista Home Premium. The Wind12 series consists of 12.1" ultra-portables pack the most essential features with a touch of luxury, in its 297x 190 x 24.5~31 mm chassis, tipping the scales at 1.4 kg.

Intex Launches N101-WC1100 Netbook

Intex, a computer peripheral firm from India, recently unveiled a new netbook - the N101-WC1100. The netbook sports an Intel Atom processor paired with up to 2GB RAM. A 160GB hard drive is available for data storage. The netbook has a 10" widescreen display with a 1.3MP webcam. It also features a 7-in-1 card reader. Connectivity is handled by a 802.11b/g Wi-Fi adapter, as well as a Bluetooth adapter.

The Intex N101-WC1100 netbook comes in two flavors: chic red ($403) and elegant black ($395).

Gateway Introduces Intel Atom N270-equipped LT2000 Netbook

Gateway Inc. today introduces the Gateway LT2000, a new sleek and compact netbook with a 10.1-inch TFT LED-backlit display that will let mobile customers maximize their time on the go to stay connected and productive. Gates Downplays Chrome OS

Google's recent announcement of the Chrome OS, a web-oriented operating system that aims to use practicality and speed as its USPs, created more than just a few waves in the IT world. The firm later added that Chrome was going to be a free software, and has the support of some of the biggest names in the industry. At the receiving end of a potential competitor both in the operating system and cloud computing businesses, undoubtedly is Microsoft.

In an interview with CNet's Ina Fried, Bill Gates took the liberty of commenting on this development and implied that the waves Chrome OS created, are but in a teacup. "There's many, many forms of Linux operating systems out there and packaged in different ways and booted in different ways," Gates said, "In some ways I am surprised people are acting like there's something new. I mean, you've got Android running on Netbooks. It's got a browser in it," he added.

Sony Vaio W 10.1-inch Netbook Announced

Sony's Vaio P elite netbook claimed top notch hardware specs when it was first unveiled, but its price made it unattractive to buyers, so now it is time for it to step down in flavour of the new Vaio W netbook. The new VAIO W sports a useful 10.1-inch LED-backlit LCD display that offers a better-than-usual resolution of 1366x768 pixels. Available in berry pink, cocoa brown or sugar white it also brings with it a 1.66 GHz Intel Atom N280 processor, 1 GB of DDR2 RAM, integrated Intel GMA 950 graphics and a 160 GB hard disk drive. Like most netbooks, Sony VAIO W comes with Microsoft Windows XP OS installed, other trimmings include Bluetooth, 802.11b/g/n, VGA out, two USB ports, Ethernet, webcam, and a MemoryStick / SD card reader.
