AMD's CES 2019 Keynote - Stream & Live Blog

CPUs or GPUs? Ryzen 3000 series up to 16 cores or keeping their eight? Support for raytracing? Navi or die-shrunk Vega for consumer graphics? The questions around AMD's plans for 2019 are still very much in the open, but AMD's Lisa Su's impending livestream should field the answers to many of these questions, so be sure to watch the full livestream, happening in just a moment.

18:33 UTC: Looking forward, Lisa mentioned a few technology names without giving additional details: "... when you're talking about future cores, Zen 2, Zen 3, Zen 4, Zen 5, Navi, we're putting all of these architectures together, in new ways".

18:20 UTC: New Ryzen 3rd generation processors have been teased. The upcoming processors are based on Zen 2, using 7 nanometer technology. AMD showed a live demo of Forza Horizon 4, using Ryzen third generation, paired with Radeon Vega VII, which is running "consistently over 100 FPS at highest details at 1080p resolution". A second demo, using Cinebench, pitted an 8-core/16-thread Ryzen 3rd generation processor against the Intel Core i9-9900K. The Ryzen CPU was "not final frequency, an early sample". Ryzen achieved a score of 2057 using 135 W, while Intel achieved a score of 2040 using 180 W.. things are looking good for Ryzen 3rd generation indeed. Lisa also confirmed that next-gen Ryzen will support PCI-Express 4.0, which doubles the bandwidth per lane over PCI-Express 3.0. Ryzen third generation will run on the same AM4 infrastructure as current Ryzen; all existing users of Ryzen can simply upgrade to the new processors, when they launch in the middle of 2019 (we think Computex).
Ryzen third generation uses a chiplet design. The smaller die on the right contains 8-cores/16-threads using 7 nanometer technology. The larger die on the left is the IO die, which consists of things like the memory controller and PCI-Express connectivity, to shuffle data between the CPU core die and the rest of the system.

AMD Launches 'Raise the Game Fully Loaded' Bundle, Offers Up To Three Free Games If You Buy a Radeon RX

With AMD's announcement of the new Radeon RX 590 graphics card we've learned something interesting: any user who buys a Radeon RX graphics card or a Radeon RX powered PC will get up to three games for free. "Tom Clancy's The Division 2", "Resident Evil 2" and "Devil May Cry 5", with a retail value of up to $180, will be the titles available for those users.

As mentioned on the press release, "gamers who purchase an AMD Radeon RX Vega or RX 590, or an eligible Radeon RX Vega or RX 590 powered PC, will receive free copies of all three games. Gamers who purchase an AMD Radeon RX 580 or RX 570 graphics card, or an eligible Radeon RX 580 or RX 570 powered PC, can choose two of these games for free".

AMD Radeon RX 590 Launch Price, Other Details Revealed

AMD is very close to launching its new Radeon RX 590 graphics card, targeting a middle-of-market segment that sells in high volumes, particularly with Holiday around the corner. The card is based on the new 12 nm "Polaris 30" silicon, which has the same exact specifications as the "Polaris 20" silicon, and the original "Polaris 10," but comes with significantly higher clock-speed headroom thanks to the new silicon fabrication process, which AMD and its partners will use to dial up engine clock speed by 10-15% over those of the RX 580. While the memory is still 8 Gbps 256-bit GDDR5, some partners will ship overclocked memory.

According to a slide deck seen by VideoCardz, AMD is setting the baseline price of the Radeon RX 590 at USD $279.99, which is about $50 higher than RX 580 8 GB, and $40 higher than the price the RX 480 launched at. AMD will add value to that price by bundling three AAA games, including "Tom Clancy's The Division 2," "Devil May Cry 5," and "Resident Evil 2." The latter two titles are unreleased, and the three games together pose a $120-150 value. AMD will also work with monitor manufacturers to come up with graphics card + AMD FreeSync monitor bundles.

Ubisoft At Gamescom 2018: All the Franchises, All the Time

We went to Ubisoft's floor space at Gamescom 2018, and it was easily one of the biggest ones (only really comparable to Blizzard's, in both size and apparatus). Naturally, the focus was on the heavy hitting franchises, like Assassin's Creed, where Ubisoft had at least three people dressed up in a thematically resonant way with the title's Greek setting, alongside a Spartan statue. Everywhere you looked there were people holding paper Spartan shields or pretending to be fighting with the Ubisoft employees; it was like a budget version of 300 was assaulting you from all sides. Like with almost all games, there was hands-on time for those willing to wait in-line.

AMD Announces The Division 2, Resident Evil 2 Remake, Strange Brigade Partnerships

AMD at E3 2018 announced its commitment to powering the ultimate gaming experiences via partnerships with game publishers and developers, to bring fantastic 3D realms to life. In line with AMD's cooperation with Ubisoft in Far Cry 5, which saw the usage of AMD Vega-centric technologies (such as FP16 Compute on some water and lighting scenarios, Rapid Packed Math, and Shader Intrinsics) across the title, the company has announced it will help Ubisoft deliver a DX12-driven experience with The Division 2. It remains to be seen if more technologies than were used in Far Cry 5 will be in play here.

Alongside its Ubisoft/The Division 2 announcement, AMD also established partnerships with Capcom, for the upcoming Resident Evil 2 remake, and with Rebellion for their Strange Brigade title. The partnership with Capcom is a novel one, but AMD had already worked with Rebellion on Sniper Elite 4, for some stellar CrossFire performance. These partnerships join AMD's long-standing, long-reaching partnership with Bethesda Softworks, in order to fight NVIDIA's entrenchment with the videogame industry via its GameWorks program.

Ubisoft's Tom Clancy's The Division 2 Activates Agents in a Collapsing Washington D.C.

Today, at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3), Ubisoft announced a new chapter in one of the most critically acclaimed and best-selling franchises, Tom Clancy's The Division 2. Developed on an updated version of the Snowdrop Engine, the game will be released worldwide on March 15, 2019, on the Xbox One family of devices including the Xbox One X, PlayStation 4 computer entertainment system and Windows PC. Set seven months after a deadly virus was released in New York City, The Division 2 raises the stakes for players by launching them into a fractured and collapsing Washington D.C. - built as a one-to-one recreation of the city. In the wake of the virus, storms, flooding and subsequent chaos have radically transformed the city. From flooded urban areas to ravaged historic sites and landmarks, players will plunge into a dynamic open world with a wide variety of environments and biomes. As veteran Division agents, players are the last hope against the complete fall of society as enemy factions vie for control of the city. If Washington D.C. is lost, the entire nation falls.

Ubisoft and Massive Entertainment Announce "The Division 2"

(Editor's Note: The original "The Division" launched to a warm reception from users that were looking towards another shared world, persistent shooter experience. However, some issues with the games' design and endgame content meant that after the initial interest, the games' playerbase rapidly dwindled. However, Massive Entertainment went through a myriad of patches and iterations on their formula for The Division, which ultimately landed the game on a position that Destiny 2 could envy. Here's hoping that The Division 2 will actually build upon the lessons learned with The Division, delivering the definitive shared-world shooter experience. The Press Release follows.)
