Verizon Selects AMD SeaMicro SM15000 Servers For Its Cloud Services

AMD today announced that Verizon is deploying SeaMicro SM15000 servers for its new global cloud platform and cloud-based object storage service, whose public beta was recently announced. AMD's SeaMicro SM15000 server links hundreds of cores together in a single system using a fraction of the power and space of traditional servers. To enable Verizon's next generation solution, technology has been taken one step further: Verizon and AMD co-developed additional hardware and software technology on the SM15000 server that provides unprecedented performance and best-in-class reliability backed by enterprise-level service level agreements (SLAs). The combination of these technologies co-developed by AMD and Verizon ushers in a new era of enterprise-class cloud services by enabling a higher level of control over security and performance SLAs. With this technology underpinning the new Verizon Cloud Compute and Verizon Cloud Storage, enterprise customers can for the first time confidently deploy mission-critical systems in the public cloud.

Belkin Announces Availability of WeMo

Belkin today launched WeMo, a line of modular, Wi-Fi-based products that turn an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch into a remote control for household devices. Consisting of two initial products, the WeMo Switch and the WeMo Motion, WeMo works with the free WeMo app to create a scalable, customizable home control system designed to provide added safety, convenience, and peace of mind.

“WeMo uses familiar technology to create a plug-and-play solution for controlling gadgets and appliances remotely,” said Jamie Elgie, senior director of product management for Belkin. “Designed to address simple automation needs without the hassle or expense of whole home automation, WeMo is an easy and fun way to put your home at your fingertips.”

Apple Rapidly Moving to Become Direct Mobile Service Provider, Predicts Strategist

Apple’s next big move will be to provide wireless service directly to its iPad and iPhone customers, according to veteran wireless industry strategist Whitey Bluestein.

Bluestein told an international gathering of wireless operators, resellers and suppliers that Apple has all of the critical elements – the world’s leading brand, distribution through 363 Apple Stores, digital content (music, video and apps)—which will allow it to exploit its 250 million iTunes accounts with credit cards on file.

He also noted that Apple has a patent-pending network architecture to enter the wireless industry as a service provider. Apple filed a patent application in October 2006, shortly before the first iPhone announcement, with a diagram on how it would offer wireless service directly to customers using networks of several mobile operators. The patent application was extended in fall 2011. Bluestein said that the patent confirms that Apple has thought through how it would offer service directly to customers.

Vonage Infringing on Verizon copyrights; may be shut down soon

Most people know that Vonage is one of the pioneer Voice over Internet Protocol services, that allows people to use the telephone, running off only the internet. Unfortunately, to make this service happen, Vonage has been using patents owned by Verizon. And Verizon flagged them for this. Verizon wants Vonage to not be able to register any new customers until all patent issues are resolved. And as of the time this case went to court (April 6, 2007), Vonage had no such plans to do so. At this point Vonage has three choices. They can either spend an enormous amount of money re-doing their network so it's all their own, pay Verizon a premium for their technology, or to shut down completely.Source: The Inquirer

Verizon will allow advertising on their mobile phones

Verizon Wireless, one of America's most heavily advertised wireless phone carriers, has recently decided to see how much money they can make in the mobile advertising department. Considering that advertisers spent $45 million in 2005 and $150 million in 2006 on phone ads from various other carriers, mobile advertising really should take off this year. The market is predicted to be worth $1.3 billion by 2010. Verizon is working hard to find places to put that ads so that while they will still be on news, weather, sports and other internet sites, they will not be intrusive.Source: CNET
