LG Launches 14- and 16-inch Ultra PC Laptops in Europe

LG's Intel based gram-series of notebooks have proven quite popular in the Ultrabook segment. However, its Ultra PC models are built around AMD hardware and although there have been a 13.3-inch model in the past, the company has announced its new 14- and 16-inch models. Both models are based around either a Ryzen 5 5625U or a Ryzen 7 5825U processor, which is built on AMD's Barcelo chips. This sadly means that features like USB4, DDR5/LPDDR5 and PCIe 4.0 support are out the window. This is because Barcelo is a refresh of Cezanne, which means both CPU families based on the Zen 3 architecture. On the plus side, this means the pricing will be quite competitive, but more on that in a second.

The 14-inch model measures 313.9 x 220.45 x 16.3 mm and weighs in at 1.29 kg, whereas the 16-inch model is slightly larger—for obvious reasons—and measures 356.3 x 248.6 x 16.3 mm, but remains fairly portable at 1.6 kg. The display on both the 14- and 16-inch models features 1920x1200 resolution, with the 14-inch model having a brighter display at 300 vs 250 nits for the 16-inch model. Neither display is what you'd call impressive though. Other features include up to 16 GB of dual-channel LPDDR4X memory, up to 1 TB of storage, HDMI out, a USB-C port with DP Alt mode and USB PD support, two USB-A ports, a microSD card slot, an audio jack and a power connector for the charger. WiFi 6 and Bluetooth 5.1, as well as a fingerprint reader are also part of the package. Battery life is said to be up 21 and 20 hours respectively when it comes to video playback, with the 14-inch model managing 16.5 hours in MobileMark 2018, whereas the 16-inch model only manages 15 hours flat. LG will offer a range of SKUs that start at €1,199 for the 14-inchers and €1,399 for the 16-inchers, all of which should be available at some point this month.

ASUS Republic of Gamers Unveils ROG Rapture GT-AX11000 Pro Gaming Router With U-NII 4 Support

ASUS Republic of Gamers (ROG) today announced the ROG Rapture GT-AX11000 Pro, a stylish gaming router that's ready to deliver ultrafast WiFi 6 and 10 Gbps Ethernet to every type of gamer.

The GT-AX11000 Pro is designed from the ground up to punch through increasingly congested wireless airwaves and maintain low-lag gaming experiences, wickedly fast download speeds and vast signal coverage. This coverage is expanded by leveraging ASUS RangeBoost Plus, and ASUS AiMesh compatibility allows users to combine AiMesh routers to create a whole-home mesh WiFi network—or instantly augment an existing one—in order to eliminate any dead spots. The second 5 GHz band includes new Unlicensed National Information Infrastructure 4 (U‑NII 4) support, which enables an extra high-speed 160 MHz channel for compatible client devices. The GT-AX11000 Pro is easy to manage via the free ASUS Router mobile app, which gives any level of user intuitive access to the router's arsenal of powerful features. There's also an easy-to-use web-based interface that additionally allows configuration of the new 10 Gbps LAN/WAN port.

Intel WiFi 7 Products to be Unveiled in 2024 with Speeds of up to 5.8 Gbps

Although Intel threw in the towel and gave up on making routers and gateways back in 2020, the company is still the world's largest manufacturer of WiFi modules for computers. Now news out of Korea suggests that Intel's first WiFi 7 products will be launched in 2024, about a year after the expected availability of the first WiFi 7 routers and gateways. That said, based on a quote from Eric McLaughlin, vice president of Intel's wireless solutions division, who attended an unspecified press conference in the APAC region, Intel "expect it to appear in major markets in 2025." This suggests that it'll be a late 2024 launch and we might see competitors' products in notebooks and PCs way ahead of Intel this time around.

That said, the WiFi 7 standard is currently only in the late stages of development, despite Broadcom, MediaTek and Qualcomm having announced multiple products already. It's likely we'll see another round of draft spec hardware launching either later this year, or next year, with the final WiFi 7 spec not expected to be ratified until 2024. As such, Intel may be later than its competitors, but should hopefully launch a feature complete product. Intel's products should support speeds of up to 5.8 GHz, although this would be using a 320 MHz wide channel and 4K QAM, which means these speeds will be limited to a few meters from a router. WiFi devices have a history of quirky issues between brands, even if none of them have been so severe that a fallback to an older standard hasn't solved the problem, but it's still been a hassle for consumers. Hopefully WiFi 7 won't repeat history, but we wouldn't place a bet on it.

ASUS Previews RT-AXE7800 Router at Computex, 6 Antennas!

As Computex is a hybrid event this year, a lot of companies are showing off their products online and ASUS has shared a whole host of upcoming products. One that caught our eye was the upcoming RT-AXE7800 router, mostly because it resembles a boxy version of a German kaisersemmeln or kaiser roll when the antennas are folded down. Unfortunately, ASUS didn't share too many details about the RT-AXE7800, but it's a tri-band WiFi 6E router and ASUS claims that it supports wireless speeds up to 7800 Mbps, hence the model name. It supports 160 MHz wide channels, although this is pretty common in WiFi 6E routers, as is the 1024-QAM support and the 6 GHz band that ASUS shared that the router will support.

What we can tell from the pictures, is that it'll have a single 2.5 Gbps port that can be used as either a WAN or a LAN port, as well as four Gigabit Ethernet ports, of which one can be a WAN port, or it can be teamed with a second Gigabit port. Keep in mind that teaming doesn't actually give you double the bandwidth to a single client, it requires multiple clients to offer any kind of advantage, as well as a managed switch, alternatively a NAS or a server that supports teaming. Around the back there's a single USB 3.0 port and this is also where the power connector is located. It obviously has six foldable antennas and we'd expect to see more similar designs in the future, as consumer routers with supports for the WiFi channels in the 6 GHz band aren't allowed to have removable antennas. This will also apply to WiFi 7 routers, as it's a regulatory requirement.

Gigabyte Launches 55-inch Android Powered Gaming Monitor

Gigabyte's latest gaming product seems to be aimed towards console gamers rather than PC gamers, as the S55U gaming monitor is quite an odd duck when it comes to the spec. For starters, it sports a 54.6-inch Quantum Dot VA panel with a 4K resolution, which is said to offer a typical brightness of 500 cd/m² and a peak brightness of 1500 cd/m², as well as a contrast ratio of 5000:1. This is thanks to array based LED backlight, although Gigabyte only has only gone for 132 zones, which is the lowest zone count we've seen to date. It has a refresh rate of 120 Hz and it has a response time of 5 ms on average, although Gigabyte also quotes a minimum response time of 2 ms. The panel is said to deliver 140 percent of the sRGB colour space and 96 percent of DCI-P3. It also supports FreeSync Premium, VRR and ALLM, which means gaming should be pretty much tear free. Dolby Vision, HDR10, HDR10+ and the HLG HDR standards are also part of the package.

However, as the S55U is a not-TV it has two HDMI 2.1 ports (one with eARC), both of which are capable of 48 Gbps signals, as well as two HDMI 2.0 ports, but it lacks a DisplayPort, making it just as PC friendly as your average TV. Other connectivity consists of a USB 3.2 Gen 1 (5 Gbps) port, a single USB 2.0 port, a headphone jack, a Toslink connector and an unspecified Ethernet jack. There's also built-in support for WiFi and Bluetooth, as well as a pair of 10 W speakers. Despite not being a TV, the S55U runs an unspecified version of what appears to be Android TV and it's said to have support for Chromecast, the Google Assistant and maybe more importantly, Google Play.

Several Older Asus Routers at Risk of Being Infected by Cyclops Blink Worm

If you own an Asus 802.11ac/WiFi 5 router, you might want to make sure your firmware is up-to-date, as several models are at risk of being infected by a Russian botnet malware. The group behind the worm, which goes under the name of Cyclops Blink, is Sandworm APT, the same group that created the VPNFilter botnet a few years ago. Cyclops Blink was detected by Trend Micro and although it seems it doesn't cause any direct harm to the network behind the router it infects at this point in time, it is a persistent malware and is believed to be a first of its kind. Unlike most malware that attack routers, the Cyclops Blink worm can save itself to the flash memory in the router, so even a factory reset won't wipe it off.

That said, a firmware flash will remove it and according to a security bulletin from Asus, the company advises all of its customers to install the latest firmware. On top of this, Asus also recommends to turn off remote management, if enabled and to change the admin login credentials and make sure to use a complex password. However, the company doesn't have an update that is guaranteed to prevent the malware from infecting their products, since at this point in time, it's unclear how the Cyclops Blink worm infects routers. Prior to the Asus routers listed below getting attacked, the malware was mainly going after WatchGuard Firebox devices, which are generally only used by businesses. Based on the information provided by Trend Micro, it looks like Asus is unlikely to be the only brand of routers that will be targeted by the malware, so even if you don't own an Asus router, it would be a good idea to make sure your firmware is up to date. Another option would be to install a third party firmware, although the Merlin firmwares for Asus are also likely to be affected, based on comments by the authour of the firmware over on the Small Net Builder forums.

MSI Intros MAG H670 Tomahawk WiFi DDR4 Motherboard

Intel debuted its Socket LGA1700 motherboard lineup with Z690, and later B660 and H610 chipset options, but the H670 seemed elusive. Motherboard vendors are slowly launching their H670-based offerings, and MSI joined the party with the MAG H670 Tomahawk WiFi DDR4. The board is very similar in design to the company's MAG B660 Tomahawk-series motherboards, but with a little more I/O, and a broader chipset bus. The key feature that sets the H670 apart from the B660 is the 8-lane DMI 4.0 chipset bus, compared to 4-lane DMI 4.0 on the B660.

Another key difference between the H670 Tomahawk and B660 Tomahawk is that the PCI-Express x16 slot is Gen 5 capable on the H670 board, but this is due to MSI's design choices. On paper, B660 platforms can have Gen 5 PEG slots. Yet another key differentiator between the H670 and B660 chipsets, is that the H670 puts out 12 PCIe Gen 4 downstream lanes, and MSI leveraged this to put out two chipset-attached M.2 NVMe slots with Gen 4 x4 wiring. Connectivity includes a 2.5 GbE wired networking interface driven by an Intel i225-V controller, an Intel AX200 WiFi 6 + Bluetooth 5.2 module; and 8-channel HD audio driven by the 12-year old Realtek ALC897 CODEC. The company didn't reveal pricing.

Comcast Connected Nearly 1 Billion Devices Over WiFi in 2021

The number of devices connected to WiFi has skyrocketed by 12X since 2018 as Xfinity households connected nearly 1 billion devices in 2021. In fact, reliable WiFi has become so critical that nearly half of the country (45 percent) believe it is more important than reliable transportation*. These findings and more highlight Comcast's 2021 WiFi Trends Report, providing insights into how WiFi enabled Americans to pursue what mattered to them most in 2021 based on network trends and consumer insights.

"The ecosystem of connected devices in the home and the applications running on them has exploded over the last few years, driving a shift in consumers perceptions on what truly is important to their connectivity experience," said Sophie Ahmad, Chief Marketing Officer of Xfinity Consumer Service, Comcast Cable. "Unbeatable Internet that provides the best connection, complete security, faster speeds and the best tech is now integral to how Americans work, exercise, parent, and entertain."
