Standards Group Formed to Enable Internet of Things Growth

Weightless, the global organisation responsible for delivering royalty-free open standards to enable the Internet of Things, today announced a new Special Interest Group (SIG) to accelerate the adoption of "Weightless" as a wireless wide area global standard for machine to machine (M2M) short to mid-range communications.

ARM, Cable & Wireless Worldwide, CSR and Neul have today formally signed the 'SIG Promoter Agreement' which details how they will back Weightless's mission to establish a new standard and encourage its adoption worldwide. The Weightless standard this group will define is on track for completion in early 2013.

Wilocity WiGig Technology Powering Dell Latitude 6430u Ultrabook

Heralding a new era in high-speed wireless connectivity, Wilocity, the leading developer of 60 GHz multi-gigabit wireless chipsets, today announced that it is jointly providing tri-band wireless chipsets with Qualcomm Atheros, Inc., for Dell's first WiGig enabled Ultrabook for business, the Latitude 6430u. Dell announced the Latitude 6430u last week and demonstrated its multi-gigabit wireless docking and networking capabilities at a Windows 8 launch attended by Dell and Microsoft executives in New York City.

Dell's new Latitude 6430u Ultrabook, integrating the Tri-band chipset from Wilocity and Qualcomm-Atheros, will be among the very first devices to reach the market featuring WiGig technology (IEEE 802.11ad). JBL SoundFly Air Wireless Speaker Up for Pre-Order

Harman International Industries has now started taking pre-orders for its newest JBL-branded audio hardware, the SoundFly Air wireless speaker. This device has a total power output of 20 W, it plugs directly into a wall outlet, and it uses WiFi to wirelessly connect to PCs, Macs, iPhones and iPads (Apple AirPlay is supported).

The SoundFly Air measures 190 (D) x 92 (H) mm, it has a frequency response of 60Hz - 20kHz, and it costs $199. To sweeten the deal JBL is also offering a free companion app that allows users to 'browse music with cover art, adjust volume and tone, and fully customize the digital signal processing (DSP) to get the best sound'.

ASUS Outs WiDi-Equipped P8Z77-I Deluxe Variant

ASUS released the P8Z77-I Deluxe/WD, a variant of the P8Z77-I Deluxe socket LGA1155 motherboard based on the Intel Z77 Express chipset, in the mini-ITX form-factor. Essentially identical to the original, its WLAN controller features Intel Wireless Display Technology (WiDi), which lets you stream high-definition video to displays and projectors wirelessly.
