Rosewill Hercules 1600 W Review

Packaging

No need to worry, this cardboard box only protects the unit's real package. Check the pictures below to take a look.

Once we opened the plain cardboard box, we were astonished to find this metallic case storing the unit. This is definitely the proper package for such a high-end PSU; however, it probably adds a significant amount to the final price. It is pretty nice, and will be useful in many different ways, not only as a storage unit for leftover cables.

Contents

The storage unit protects the unit well. The Hercules-1600's top is also protected by packing foam and a piece of cloth.

At the bottom of the metallic box is a case containing all cables. The rest of the bundle includes a high amperage (C19) power cord, which is absolutely necessary with 115 VAC input, the user's manual, and a set of fixing bolts. The unit doesn't come with any Velcro straps or zip ties, but such an expensive unit should really include both.

Exterior

The PSU's finish looks good, although it isn't matte enough to protect it from fingerprints or scratches. We would also prefer different decals on the sides, in smaller and more stylish fonts than those currently used, which don't look good at all. The front has an LED indicator with three modes, and the on/off switch is, according to Rosewell, covered in a plastic membrane to protect against electrical shocks. The turbo fan switch is here as well. Enabling it will have the fan rotate at its full speed constantly, which may make this switch come in handy if you need to push the PSU really hard; it really doesn't offer anything but more noise output under normal conditions.

The dimensions of the unit are out of this world because of its immense length. This is probably the largest commercial/desktop PSU available today. Also, its looks are generally not that appealing since Rosewill's focus was on performance, not an aesthetically pleasing design.

All cables are fully sleeved but none of them are stealth. There are also very many of them, making ribboned (aka flat) cables a much better choice than these round ones.
