A Closer Look

The Thermaltake SpinQ heatsink has a very unique design. It has six heatpipes that lead from a small, flat base to the cylindrical-shaped series of fins. The fins are slightly rotated as they progress from the first fin to the last, which gives the outside of the cooler a spiral look. The fan sits inside the fins, and the six heatpipes are different lengths so that they are spread out evenly among the fins.

The base is protected by a thin sheet of plastic during shipping. Upon removal a highly-polished base is exposed, which is fairly flat and smooth. I would say that this is by far the smoothest and shiniest base I have seen from Thermaltake. Under the razor test the base has a slight bow in the center, which is acceptable. This will actually help with better contact at the center of the CPU heatspreader where it is needed most.

Removal of the squirrel-cage style fan is easy: three small screws and it is loose. The blades are made of clear plastic while the frame is a clear-smoke color. The two sets of wires coming off the fan are for the three-pin power connector and the "variable-resistance" VR controller. Each set of wires is wrapped in black mesh and neatly done, as always.
