USB 3.0

Taking a look at HD Tach with USB 3.0 attached, the hard drive within the system becomes the bottleneck. Our sample utilized the Toshiba MK1059GSM drive, which rotates at 5400 RPM and offers 8 MB cache along with a 4 KB sector format, which reduces the overhead of traditional formatting, giving you more usable space. Interestingly enough, this hard drive is being sold with the explicit mention that no warranty is given, but by buying the Verbatim Store'n'Go as a whole, Verbatim will provide the usual warranty for the entire unit - including the hard drive. In terms of performance with USB 3.0, the drive has that usual downward performance line. This means that the USB 3.0 interface is able to tickle everything out of the drive, much like eSATA would.


ATTO shows what the drive is capable of in terms of maximum performance at the center of the drive. Almost 100 MB/s read and 80 MB/s write make the update to USB 3.0 a worthy move.

USB 2.0

In terms of USB 2.0 performance the drive pushes the envelope quite nicely with 32 MB/s read and write performance. So those who want to buy a drive for their existing USB 2.0 interface, but remain future proof should be quite happy.


ATTO delivers similar results. The slightly higher read speed can be attributed to the little spike at the beginning of the platter as seen in HD Tach.
