Deaths of many GTX570s

I saw it too. Nvidia makes the card throttle during furmark and OCCT. People disable the throttling, run furmark or OCCT and burn up their cards. Makes perfect sense. :)

honestly lol! however i wonder where it throttles??? couldnt nvidia contain the power a bit better without making it throttle??

its like nvidia cheaped out on the VRM amount on the 570 becuase the 580s are perfectly fine with the 50% more VRM's
 
What I don't get is how are we supposed to stress test all these power limited cards. You need to have confidence in your overclocks, and if it's throttling how will you ever know. I think we need a smarter gen of stress testing apps. Like why does crysis catch stuff all stress testing programs can miss? Someone with the skills should look into it and give us a modern stress test.

Ouch! Well, I do remember furmark borking 4870's at one point. It's not a program I use as it seems to really push cards past what they are supposed to be used for.

Pretty much, they put enough there to handle stock and mild overclocking, but if you start going nuts you'll have problems.

Which is sad in my opinion since the fermi turned out to be one of the best overclocking GPU series ever.

hmmm if i were to choose between the 570 or 6950 now. it would probalby be a 6950 haha

Seriously Furmark is such a stupid piece of software that has little use in any real sense other than creating a completely unrealistic load that you will never ever see in any real use. I buy my video cards to play games. I don't buy them to simulate what would happen if I lit my pants on fire on some other nonsensical use. :banghead:

Furmark exploits the GPU for maximum heat, not only that... but Furmark stable doesnt mean game stable, so its a bit worse than useless. Still though, shame they skimped on the power circuitry with such a nice chip :/.

yeah maybe its from all of that, i dunno for mid or high end card they should consider that maybe some want to OC it more or they push it too much :banghead:

Why?

You aren't going to have this problem at stock voltages, or even slight voltage increases, and the GTX570 still overclocks better than the HD6950 on stock voltages.
 
Well you could also say the 6950 overclocks better with the voltage above stock, something people may have a good reason to fear doing on a 570. As much as a prefer nvidia I wouldn't buy or even keep a gifted 570, there's plenty of options out there that you don't have to worry about the durability on.
 
Well... i surely won't be stressing using furmark on my 570... I like my card, I want it to work like it should. :D

Whilst it's fair enough to presume some leeway on either side of factory spec, come on..

They need to redesign the power circuitry. Its bottlenecking a good gpu. But i guess that would make the card costly for its stock performance.. them Giga SoC or MSI Lightning filled that gap anyways

Exactly , it is there for a reason, it makes sense to keep power under control. Now all the hater will whinge about how they should have changed VRMs, but if they did cost goes up , then they whinge about that, so they lower the price and make no money on it so they cut the product then everyone whinges about that :| it goes around in circles, but in the end Nvidia are correct in ther decision to use a limiter.
 
I am receiving mine tomorrow. I love overclocking my cards, but from those news..i am hesitating on doing it.
I want to push my card to 820-830/1000 only, so what are the limits to avoid burning the card ?
 
Power throttling is a necessity. It's a manifestation of evolution in GPU designs.
You're better off with power-throttled chip than a less-powerful one, designed not to exceed certain power level.

Altering power-throttling should be possible though (but disabling it should void warranty).
Enthusiast know what they're doing when playing with it.
You don't expect the card to survive with stock cooler and hugely increased power consumption.
