low end upgrade for client's system

Ok, I've got a client who has a HP prebuilt with a 9400gs video card. I think the psu is a 350w psu, but I'm not sure of this as I won't see the system until tonight. He wants to upgrade his video card, but he doesn't want to pay for a new power supply (despite my advice). I'm offering the 2600xt because I have a used one on hand. I also have a 8800gts 640 on hand too, but his psu will not handle it. Would a 2600xt provide any noticeable increase in frame rates?

Wouldnt a low end 4xxx series be better? Or does it need to be AGP?

It's simply what I have on hand, and he wants something cheap. His system is PCI-E

Well if you have it on hand, can you give it a go to try it?

I'm pretty sure it would give a performance boost. i did quite well with my 2600XT

OK, answered my own question. The 2600xt is actually on par with a 8600gts. So the switch would be worth it.

Wow, it has a 9400gs sounds like the system is pretty new. I bet HP marketed it as a gaming computer too because it has a dedicated graphics card. Its a shame that PC makers trick the average consumer. Most times a "gaming pc" from HP, Dell, etc. is one that can play current games at low or med settings with low fps.

Well its on par in certain spots... Much closer to a 8600GT as long as its GDDR4... The GDDR3 one isn't much of a card IMO....

But ya it would be a pretty decent upgrade, power supply should handle it as long as he has at least 16amps or so on 12volt.
