Hi guys,

First of, thanks for everyone for helping me choose parts for my new system (see my system specs).
I have somewhat of a dilemma in regards to my sound card.

Currently I have a AVLabs Audacity 7.1, based on Via's Envy 24 HT-S leftover from my old system. Link

Should I keep this or use the onboard Realtek ALC885 from the LANPARTY DK 790GX-M2RS?

P.S.
For speakers I use these suckers: Genius SW-HF 5.1 5005

Thanks

Hey

Sorry to hijack your thread but...

What are the actual advantages of a sound card?

You mean the advantages of a PCI sound car over the onboard one?

You get alot better sound :)

I got a asus xonar - its a pretty decent card for average use. Only problem with it, is that it dosent have eax 3 and 4, and only emulates eax5

the onboard is a codec, it translate the audio but it dont process it, a sound card process it and translate it. Also i read at newegg, onboard audio from that mobo SUCKS MONKEY BALLS

Well, for once, I don't plan on upgrading my soundcard to anything made by Creative. They have terrible support for drivers, especially for Vista, which I plan to upgrade to as soon as possible. Their cards have the tendency to be somewhat overpriced also.
I'll probably get a Xonar sometime in the future but at the moment I plant to just keep my current sound card if you guys say the onboard is worse.
The old Envy did it's job for the last two years without a hitch! The only thing missing is a connector for Front Panel Audio...

As a not for my particular mobo: the PCI-E x1 slot becomes unusable when using a two slot video card. I wouldn't recommend using it even with a single slot one as the sound car might block the cooling fan or at least obstruct it...

İ see. İ think asus xonar reasonable choice except game against x-fi. İf your priority doesn't abaout the game you could buy xonar.
