I just got this in the mail today from newegg and it's taking forever to install which I thought was weird how do you know if you have a bad disk? Would it even be installing if it was bad?

FYI it froze once in mid install so I restarted and it's installing again just very slowly and it didn't auto read the disk when I first put it in

Sounds like your DVD may be on the way out. That's how mine started to go. First it would have difficulty with only a few discs, then it finally moved on to all discs.

IIRC, Painkiller took for freaking ever to install, so you may just need to let it run it's course. And no, I don't think a disc will install at all if it's bad, that or it will give a read error.

Yeah, if it's new, just try and let it run. If worse comes to worse, try installing in safe mode. I don't know what windows you have, but if Vista, run the setup in compatibility mode.

I think i have the same DVD writer , i bought one of those. Black version. Btw, i have black edition, but it only takes a long time if i install it on my external HD, which is running on 1.1 speed. But if you computer supports 2.0 and you have alot of internal hd space, it shouldn't take too long.

Does it take a hour or something?

It keeps popping up saying it can't open certain things here is what it is saying cannot open source file d:\content\directx\bda.cab

OOOOOOOOOOOOOH, hmmmm i think i seen something like that before. Try installing black edition in the bottom drive(your other drive). If this does not work, i have a idea, but lets try that first.

I only have one drive it finished installing than I got an error message because it didn't download the direct x file so I'm reinstalling it and it's working alot faster now maybe it was the fact that I had to restart it the first time due to me thinking it froze

Cool. But i was going to suggest, because i believe i am using the same dvd writer as you. I had some issues with mine, until i took out the dvd writer, and remove the jumper in the back of it , and place it back in. Those jumpers if you know what i am talking about, that little blue thing, i remove it, put it in another slot, then put it back into the slot or just move it around or into a different place. Now my dvd writer is working like its suppose too. LOL you can put the jumper into the other slot which i meant to say.

Thats the same thing that Half Life 2 would do to me. I would get to disc 4 and it would give me errors, EVERY time, except once or twice. Just chalk it up to gremlins messing with you, thats what I do.

My HL2 did the same thing... except it would install, and then the game would not start up... just freeze. I had to wait like 6 months before I would work correctly :banghead:

Once I got a high speed internet connection, I simply downloaded it from Steam. Sucks that they make you do stuff like that though.

I really disliked this game..
the ai's were retarded to no end..
the story was the worst I have ever seen.. period..
and the killing was just non stop..
the only thing I liked about the game were the witches..
they looked so creepy cool..
