I've had an el cheapo Philips 1GB one for the last few years, however the casing on it's beginning to fall off (as in if I take it out of a PC the PCB and the USB part stay attached, the case comes off) and it's been causing problems (my teacher plugged it into his laptop and the thing froze twice in a row, only worked third time round), also it's reliability with my school's computers is distinctly hit and miss (as in it works with about half of them, the other half reject it).
I'd like one that can take a good kicking, being put in the bottom of a rucksack/ carried in a pocket etc, I need at least 1GB although a decent 4GB one for under £15 would not go amiss, absolute max is £20 including P and P, any ideas on what I should go for?

This would be my recomendation:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820233027

This thing is shock and water resistant, it has a rubber casing that protects it. I have one and often carry it in my pocket and that never caused any damage. One thing i'd recomend with USB sticks is that you Safely Remove it in Windows prior to pulling it out, i've heard of people having problems when its not removed properly.

+1 I actually own one, am going to order a new one, my old one survived the washing machine 8 times. It finally met its demise to a power surge.

I LIKE, just found an 8GB model on Novatech for £16.71, i have a tendency to leave stuff in pockets but I've been fairly good with my memory sticks so far, at least I won't be worried about my coursework disappearing into nowhere (it's backed up but the school's network is a bit hit and miss).
No reccomendations for the corsair survivor or is that just an overpriced one?

Because we talk about school , its best to get something less desirable and cheap .

SD card and USB reader is another option .
If you do not like it , your friends will not like it too , so no one will steal it ;)

My Corsair is in my pocket each day on my keychain. It has been covered in dirt, been submerged in water, my keys fell a few stories once... it was bad. One key was bent, but the thumbdrive was ok!

I've got a reader in my laptop just it's a PITA to take everwhere with me+ I'd end up losing the SD card.
I don't work on that principle mainly because they know all bloody hell will rain down on them if they thieve or damage any of my hardware (such as the laptop I need to use thanks to my awful handwriting), it's not like anyone would ever see it anyway so whether or not other people like it doesn't matter.
I do understand your line of thought just it doesn't work since I go to a private school so everyone there can just go and ask mummy and daddy for whatever they want and sure enough they'll get it.
I've emailed the manwhocan@scan.co.uk to see if he'll do a deal on one (today only deals), I'll order the flash voyager at the weekend.

Good choice, i cant recomend it enough! There is a reason why this little drive is a top seller and a recepient of numerous customer choice awards at Newegg. BTW, they also have 1 & 2GB versions of it so if you dont need all 4GB and want to save money go for one of those, it will be cheaper.

Cheapest I can find one for's £16.71 and that's the 4GB version so there's no complaints, otherwise I've found an 8GB one for £18.39, I'll probably go for that in case I feel a need to play with linux on any of my PCs. Thanks.

I know you have decided on the Voyager(and it is a great drive) but I prefer the OCZ ATV drives. Simply because they are less bulky than the Voyager drivers(less rounded). They are extremely rugged, my 16GB has already gone through the wash twice without issue. Having a place to put the cap is nice too, I always lose those damn things.

The lifetime warranty is nice too, but 10 years on the Voyager is really enough, in 10 years 8GB flash drives will be ancient.

Difference between 10 years and lifetime warrantie's negligible, I'll probably have subjected the drive to sufficient abuse to have voided the warranty by then anyway.
You made me think of googling the drives for prices, turns out play.com has the 8gb flash voyager for £14 so thanks everyone I'll go and get my dad to order one soon (he has an account with them and setting one up will take time).
